Seems to me that Laravel is easier to learn, but Symfony is the industry standard

I've gone with laravel just now. It seems reasonably straight forward to get into.

I just built a huge app in flat php and have since been demolished by some developer friends for not using a framework - in fact I think that's my next rant.

The problem with writing without framework is, you should consider every aspect of app from basic security to structure. But when you use a framework like laravel which is maintained by a large community, you are like few steps ahead of process and you can focus on the development of real project.
