When you notice in the app store an app that does pretty much what yours does but was created after yours...

It has 1 million downloads (and it's featured by the app store) where as yours has only 500 😤😭😞😟

    but dont u have rights on your app idea?

    @jakobev well do you have to pay anyone each time you write Hello World?

    There are no rights to ideas... Technically I could create another devRant as long as it's not called devRant, that name is registered and property of @dfox

    @billgates so there is no patent in apps?

    @jakobev you own the specific implementation, if someone literally copied your code/algorithm and you can prove it, yes you can sue them.

    I mean this is how tech has always worked and why startups are so focused on user acquisition and growth.

    Either grow so big and/or have a group of loyal users or get eaten. This is basically Amazon's acquisition strategy: let us acquire you or we'll build our own and undercut your prices and even take losses until you go out of business.

    Anyone can build a FANG but they will never gain enough users to make a difference unless their way way way better and the early adopters agree and can spread the word (Google vs all those old dead search engines).

    Same with platforms, you own the platform you make the rules and one day you can become so dominant you own the world (ahem... Facebook)

    This is also why I stopped doing personal web dev and in general when I start thinking about a project, I ask myself this:

    Who are the target users?

    The answer needs to be: at least ME (and I need to want it bad...), other people great! but I don't give a fuck....

    But yea it still hurts when someone steals/copies ur ideas.....

    @billgates wtf.. i thought like this :if you have a good idea or app or anything else, for example google checks it out and want to "buy" it(your shit)...

    And now you tell me, everyone on the fuckin earth can build your shit as his own app and unfortunately earn massive amounts of money instead of you..

    I think ill hide now under the blanket and cry...

    @jakobev uh...

    Gmail == Hotmail
    News == Yahoo News
    Finance == Yahoo Finance
    Maps == Mapquest

    The reason they buy is so they dont have to bother building it themselves... or you own IP they actually need and they don't want you suing them.

    @jakobev np, it's a philosphical rant I always wanted to give :)

    You know Google once had a Google Video... it failed miserably... what'd they do? They bought YouTube.

    @billgates nice explanation mate

    Some people pay so many crowd download their app. When there is a need there is a business :(

    It also goes the other way round though... There's 8 billion people on this planet now, chances are, two come up with very much the the same idea... This is where it comes down to execution I guess, better UI/UX/marketing/brand. Without competition we'd still be living in the Stone Age. Also, regarding your lack of design/UX skills, if you truly believe in the idea, find somebody who knows his stuff and hire them (and raise $).

    @thecritic

    yep just look at WeChat, RenRen, Baidu and all those other Chinese companies... though their tech has started diverging from the Western originals...

    well its a utility app, and i mostly did write it for myself, just figured id publish it.
