computers are really expensive around here, so I've been using the same laptop for 6 years. a couple months ago it perished (rip).

me and my bf got all new parts and made a reasonably priced pc. it's been the first in a really long time that i enjoyed using a computer lol. it's a huge difference in my mindset knowing things won't take 3 min to load and that it won't crash every 2 secs

    I'm curious.. Where are you and how much more a laptop costs than, say, in us?

    @netikras brazil. the dollar is now at 5 to 6 times our currency value, our politics look like shit and no sign of getting better. i spent 3k easily (that's nearly a month's salary for me)

    @darksideofyay 3k for a pc?

    Damn, that sucks..

    @netikras if i wanted a laptop it'd be 4.5k. the graphics card alone was 1k, and not a great one

    Buying online, and shipping from the US not an option?

    AFAIK, there are companies that allow you to ship to Delaware (less us tax, zero shipoing cost), and then ship to your actual address from there at a normal shipping cost.

    smart of you guys to build it yourselves. Congrats!

    @magicMirror stuff is taxed when it gets here, pretty much the same price, plus shipping delays and going places to pay the fucking tax

    Hehehe. I've met plenty of Brazilian sailors who would dock at Hong Kong, buy as much electronics as they could fit in their cabin chests and technically smuggle it into Brazil. One told me it was a common practice called "mamba" and it was worth more than his salary.

    @JsonBoa yeah, often people with family outside the country has them bring electronics and some other stuff when they visit. back when the dollar was at 2x the real, people would go on vacation and haul stuff back

    @darksideofyay Great way to kill the tech sector sales.
    Lower taxes, increase the tax revnue bc more people can afford it.
