Calculators were like that for a long time...
Look at your numpad at pc.
For phone, eh idk some random dude decided to make it that way and it stuck. -
Might not be a biggie for some but as someone who makes phone calls and uses calculator more too often I’d appreciate some consistency in key placement.
Like seriously why: -
@GiddyNaya It is consistent with previous designs, dunno what you are talking about.
-
You should make an app with calculator laid out like number pad on phone. Just be careful, you might start trying to do math with phone app at some point.
-
@melezorus34
The reason for an inconsistent number pads is what I don't understand... Why should calculators be any different. -
@Demolishun Not sure that argument holds any water... Cause same keyboard we use on our phone is same for all apps requiring input. As much as we know the context it\s easier to type knowing the placement is the same.
It also leads to faster entries. Imagine each app having their own keyboard layout. -
The user base is divided by age and PC or calculator usage experience. The thing in question has been botched by the first makers of calculators and keyboards as starting at the top left with the lowest digit is the logical thing to do in cultures using a left-to-right-top-to-bottom writing style. So the ITU was actually (as rare as it is) right to recommend the layout starting with zero on the top-left for phone keypads back then.
Regardless of what layout is the logically more correct one, current users are accustomed to both depending on what applications and devices they used most in the past - including a lot of non-nerds with adaptation issues. So it is one of these things, that should be configurable - for the calculator _and_ the phone number input. -
Yup, it should be configurable.
I‘m sure there are hundreds of calculator apps out there that are configurable, but if not, this is your chance to make one 🙂 -
I would want it to be configurable only if one of the options is a rotary dial like the old telephones.
-
@electrineer We aren't - look at how the letters are distributed by the common PC keyboard layouts.
My phone keypad reads 1,2,3,4… and my calculator 7,8,9,4… What is wrong with all these people!!!
