Asus zenbook with ubuntu or macbook pro? 1000$ price difference

I'd go for asus since linux systems allow for a lot of customization and it saves money.

I'd go for the Zenbook as well

I've never had any problems with Asus kit which I've found to be reliable and good value.

Sadly, Apple appear to be losing the plot and seem more interested in making things thinner and removing ports than in making things actually usable and useful. That would be fair enough in a consumer product, but in something with the word "Pro" in its name? I think the fact you can't plug the latest iPhone into the latest MacBook Pro without also purchasing a special dongle speaks volumes.

Asus provides greater flexibility with multiple boot options

@Wildgoose I'd say apple markets its products for hipsters who don't know what they will use and don't care about the price to quality comparison.

I've never been a fan of apple products and never will be. Especially as a dev. The price for a dev account for apple products are simple insane, signing applications with xcode is a hassle and simply annoying and the application process of your applications in the app store take way to long.

apple's current line up is shit, go for zenbook

If you don't wish to develop ios/macos apps I'd never go for mac.

Definitely Asus Zenbook! But also look for something that's 1080p. Linux isn't very good with HIDPI.
The problem with MacBooks on Linux is bad driver support which leads to overheating and battery drain. Not sure about the Asus, but other laptops didn't have such big problems with Linux.

@apisarenco XPS has the best support for linux. It even had a Ubuntu version of it.

Def the Asus. Even if you need to deploy to iPhone apps you can still use a cloud mac and save money.

Are they expensive? Yeah. If that bothers you then don't buy one, but all the talk about them being "shit" is just silly and immature. It's almost like it's cool to hate on Apple.

@GigaMick If OP is doing a lot of music editing and/or a lot of iPhone only app dev, yea it's worth it. But for most development, that's cross platform, you can do it on a Linux box. And if you think oh it's just money or whatever, if op could think like that he'd have both already
