@ostream you guys use credit cards and not debit ones?

@ostream debit ones are essentially wallets for your money that you can top up, using credit ones means taking a loan

    i'm stealing that.

@kiki credit cards are generally safer choice. Your card gets skimmed, stolen or lost, you report it and get a new card. Everything is covered by insurance and your money is not at stake while being disputed.

Also there’s usually good rewards or cash backs.

@fckIE …in exchange for total surveillance. This is why I always pay cash with rare exceptions like paying for my hosting and domains.

When I switched from Apple Pay (that cha-ching thing when you pay by touching a terminal with your phone) to cash, my spending decreased significantly. Massive upsides with no downsides so far!

@kiki that’s cool. No question about cash being a better choice for privacy. I find myself trying to move to cash as well day by day.

However, if we’re comparing debit vs credit cards, credit cards are safer choice. I would not say better, because that’s subjective.

@fckIE agree. Though western no interest credit card model isn’t available in a lot of countries that are not as rich

@kiki wait it’s not how all credit cards work? No interest for a month?

@fckIE I lived in russia before the war, and there was no such thing as no-interest credit cards there. Not sure about other countries though

@kiki Oh I did not know they were not a universal concept. Good to know.

I have lived in India, Canada and of course is common in the states as well. Don’t know about Europe.

@fckIE the more you know :D
India is waaay ahead of russia in every way. It has a richer culture, it’s also more progressive

@fckIE in Netherlands 95% has debit card. No one uses a credit card for daily stuff AFAIK. Debit > Credit

@retoor That’s good to know. But why does that make debit cards a better choice?

For what it’s worth, I think even in Canada, lots of people actually use debit cards. For the most part they use it to avoid overusing credit cards.

@fckIE credit means always paying extra right? Some invoice? Debit is 'free'. 10,- per year account costs.
