The answer is updates. Which i get. I also understand some code reuse. And if you buy the game on something like steam which is like a package manager. It needs to exert some control over it to manage it.

However that should be optional and voluntary. If you want to offer your game in multiple stores it should be store independent. Same as multi-platform. What EA and Microsoft do is require an account with them and install their crap as a requirement. Fuck that.
