Technology moves too fast for it to ever be academically taught. Either you learn it by yourself or you get left behind.

    Specific technologies might change quickly, but the underlying theories and principles they're based on evolve far more slowly.

    A good academic course teaches you these using one language/tech, with the assumption that you'll learn to apply what you learn to whatever shiny new tech is around when you graduate.

    We used Ada95 at university, but the same principles apply to Java, C#, COBOL, etc.

    Not true, did a degree in computer science and learnt a proverbial shit-ton and it's the reason I have my current job.
    Pretty sure I'm one of quite a lot of thousands as well.
