I think most WP themes are not dev friendly. WP is not dev friendly, we all know this. WP is one big, breathing facade pattern. People with no dev experience can get an online presence with a handful of mouse clicks. Which is fine until they have to engage a dev to fix their steaming pile of excrement and devs just look at it and cry.

Working with commercial themes is a pain in the fucking ass...but building a ground up "Solution" or application or whatever you want to call it can be a not bad experience...I've said it so many times...you just have to treat it like you would any other framework...it's pretty flexible if you know what you're doing too. But I will admit that there are easier platforms / stacks (WP is made to be used with MySQL and it's a real pain to change and the way it natively structures the DB Is pretty incoherent) but with a little elbow grease that can all be set up just how you want it.
