Obviously credit card companies, banks, etc. do not use MySQL. So what database do they use to keep data secure?

    I don't think database type and security are too related. You can have an insecure setup with any database...

    Some have proprietary dbs which can be a nightmare if its not maintained well but it also offers the best security one could implement.

    Db2. Most of them use Db2. It is built on the mainframe and most of the credit card processing still runs on cobol.
