Been uninstalling things to free up space on my tiny SSD so can install an Ubuntu VM... when I just suddenly realized I could put it on an external HD....

But now actually thinking again... That HD is has a lot of things I don't want to lose... Wouldn't want to rush it failing...

hm... what should I do? 🤔😟😵

Why does moving development environments feel more daunting than buying a house?

USB thumb drive, SD-card, another external HDD, NAS (although presumably slow).
The last thing you don't have to worry about nowadays is storage memory.

Sounds like you at least need to backup your important data

Burn the important stuff into a CD or a stack of CDs.

Dump all your shit on amazon s3. Cheap safe and easy to get at without the need to buy media devices that often fail. Who the fuck uses CDs?

    Partition it

@agentQ but CDs go bad over time?

@Alt-Grrr I don't have enough RAM? need to install a full Dev environment: Java, Python, Node/web stuff, maybe C++ just because it's Linux

Prolly need at least a 30GB drive?

@Alt-Grrr still need to external HDD so don't quite solve my dilemma...

Maybe I should just buy another external... But it seems the USB port on my laptop maybe a bit unstable now.... Don't want to burn it out.... but if I move my dev env to a VM I could replace the laptop with a new one without having to set it up again.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

So maybe the question really is what do I do to backup the data on my backup drive.... So I'll have a backup when it fails one day 😵😵😵😵😵

@helloworld you'd be surprised if I tell you I came from a 3rd world country where even Internet is a luxury and having a CD collection of backups is still a thing.

And I just realized... I don't actually need the library... if I had just read the documentation and not tried to reuse some specific demo code.....

And so all that cleanup work and worrying was for nothing. Windows is perfectly fine.... for now.
