I got my lamps replaced with xioami yee lights and bought an infra red device that is like a universal rc that can be controlled with my phone. Results me not turning almost anything off as i automated most of it.. Its nice

I was lately thinking about automating some things with Home Assistant. I own a few things like smart switches and some heater controls, nothing fancy.

Those things responsible for the biggest botnets in the world? Yeah I've heard of them.

It has a huge possibility to be useful, but currently is a novelty. Also, it's an easy way to get intruders into your home network.

IOT is an ancient word that means "botnet"

Distributed networks have existed in the industrial space for decades.

IoT is the buzzword for applying those principles as insecurely as possible to the consumer space.

I personally feel like there's a lot of potential for QoL improvements (or us developers getting even lazier... depends on the PoV) but currently it is a complete and utter mess.

Security is at its minimum with possible damage at its highest with this kind of technology and since there is no established and well done standards yet it is a huge take to get anything properly working.

Also in my personal opinion most systems out there are totally flawed since they utilize a singular Hub. Now imagine that hub breaking down or getting hacked. Your whole network would be compromised. There should rather be a mesh architecture where devices discover each other within a network where permissions are strongly enforced so that even if somebody hacks your fridge you can still get your morning coffee (or in other words he doesn't gain access to much else apart from that fridge).

There's potential for a bold future but we are far far away from even getting close to it.

Sounds plausible. Currently there's not much in there for business use is there?

Plus I didn't intend to say that mesh solutions would fix security issues but rather hint at the general lack of security measures in place with current solutions.
Mesh networks would provide some form of redundancy though and it would take more than just a dead relay for everything to break down.
