Why do some countries do everything they can to stifle industry and economy?

I'm in South Africa and looking to build a high end rig. With local distributors a PC in the Excellent and above category of Logical Increments cost 3x as much as it should. Importing it myself would cost even more for shipping.
Guess I'll stick to a potato for now.

@Latsky if it is 3 times more expensive to build his computer in south africa, why not fly somewhere where it's parts are normal priced?

    let's say said computer costs normaly $1600. In SA x3 = $4800.
    Flight to London $450 roundtrip + Transport and accomodation $300 = $750

    $1600 + $750 = $2350
    $4800 - $2350 = It's $2450 cheaper than building it in SA.

lol sorry i'm drunk and overtired 🤡
    have a nice evening

@heyheni If you import an item yourself like PC parts, you have to pay a portion of its value if it's over a certain worth. So the flight will pretty much be shipping price and you'd still have to pay customs.

Source: I had to pay 200 euros for my toaster PC because I told the dude it was worth 600 after buying it for 800, despite it being overpriced and prebuilt. Also generally importing things here is a pain. Thanks for the suggestion though.

@Latsky hey dude! Tbh this makes me feel like just not buying anything other than a cheap-medium development rig and then going high end when I leave the country.

@Latsky Where are you off to if I might ask? I have EU citizenship too but haven't looked at the market around there.

@Latsky Everywhere has a market really, but Germany or Scandinavia in general are looking good to me. Sweden has really good Internet...

Come to switzerland, highest income (national median $5500) and the best infrastructure in whole europe. And the weather is way nicer than in the north. Gigabit internet is widely aviable in urban areas. Plus beautful nature for hiking and lakes for sport activities. There is a thriving expat community in Zurich.

If you go for scandinavia, would recomend south sweden in the øresund metropolitain region Malmö/Copenhagen/Gothenburg. The region is booming because of the border crossing. Earn high in Copenhagen and live cheap around Malmö.

@heyheni Interesting, thanks! Isn't cost of living quite high in Switzerland though?

@TheCapeGreek sure, but more money is still more money 😉

I always get schocked when i'm visting a friend in Berlin and he tells me that 1800€ monthly is a high paygrade. Then i think how much I earn in switzerland and chuckle. 😆

@heyheni isn't that the reason why it's ridiculously hard to get even just a work permission as foreigner? I'm not even talking about citizenship☺️

    @kb88 which reason?
theCapeGreek is lucky because of his eu citicenship he can work in switzerland and elsewhere in the schengen union.

@heyheni I meant the high salary differences between CH and other EU countries. Didn't knew you can work in Switzerland with an EU citizenship?!
