It bothers the shit out of me when I see grown-ass adults who still don't know how to type on a keyboard.

And I don't want to hear any "I prefer my crappy method".

NOBODY is faster hunting and pecking than touch typing. That's just a fact. I used to be one of those people who would defend my shitty manner of typing until I actually learned how to do it properly and realized I was just letting my pride blind me.

Now all I hear when I hear excuses for not learning touch typing is that you lack the discipline to teach yourself a new skill, and one that is undeniably beneficial in this day and age. …and let's be honest, not that hard.

So if you are over the age of 16 and haven't learned touch typing, do yourself a favour, bite the bullet and find yourself some online typing tutor. Spend an hour on it a day for a week and you'll already be faster than your old method, guaranteed.

    You're welcome.

Think you're right but as a 'grown ass adult' priorities tend to shift as you get older and an hour a day learning to touch type when you have various professional (deadlines, incompetent colleagues) and personal (kids, spouse, family, etc..) responsibilities it all tends to be a bit much. Priorities definitely shift as you get older since shit piles on but the number of hours in a day tends to stay the same unfortunately... Then again touch typing could be seen as an investment in having more time if the job is wpm centric.

My dad gave the argument that it didn't slow him down, not because touch typing isn't quicker but because he can't think faster. I prefer touch typing, but who knows.

I'm not trying to shame anyone. It is a rant after all. 😄 But I was just sitting near this girl in the coffee shop and she's clearly a university student doing this really fast (and obviously well practiced) method of one finger on her left hand and three on her right and she's actually pretty good at it. But that's what was so painful about it: it's clear that she could be a very good typist if she just bothered to learn how to use they keyboard the way it was designed to be used and put ALL of her fingers to use.

Seriously, anyone can do it. All it takes is practice. After a while it just becomes second nature.

But the question is... dvorak or qwerty?

@s3id0n Or azerty! I only know qwerty myself; I don't care which layout you prefer as long as you're using all your fingers.

Come on, why does style matter more than output? I can probably out type most touch typists, and yet my fingers aren't stuck to the set location on the keyboard and is far more dynamic.

I call it the hover and dance, because when I'm in the zone it feels like my fingers are dancing across the keyboard.

I advocate touch typing as much as the other guy, but usually my fingers end up waiting for my brain, so for programming purposes the difference is not all that great.
