I get why linux users fight with windows users..But what i dont get is the civil war between Ubuntu, Mint and the United Linux Alliance . Why ? Why not Ubuntu ?

    I like ubuntu for server and mint for gui.

    I don't like any debian based distro ... however, I must admit ubuntu is great for server, but for nothing else.

    last time I tried ubuntu it was pretty slow and had a ridiculous amount of bugs

    @karwler desktop or server?

    Exactly that is the reason why I avoid Debian/*buntu desktop ... it's slow as hell.

    Not sure if this applies to other linuxers but for me it's something 'ethical'. Ubuntu has done multiple things which are very wrong ethically IMO. They integrated an opt-out (so you're opted in by default) local system search advertisement thingy which was also connected to Amazon.
    Also they have pulled some shit like trying to intimidate some hosting providers to only offer official Ubuntu ISO's and not their own (the hosting providers' ones) modified Ubuntu ISO's. I mean that's the thing about open source, you can modify it to suit your needs and the last thing you need is getting the company behind those ISO's on your back because you're offering modified iso's. (I don't know what was modified but it had to do with hosting environments).

    So yeah I am ethically against it although I still use it on some servers :).

    @linuxxx I'm assuming that you might know something about this,

    I saw that there was a devrant slack channel. If it still exists, how do I join?
  • 3
    @ewpratten Fair enough! If you're in for it, you're most welcome to join the group chat! (although it also contains some privacy/security peoples including me)

    @ewpratten @jpichardo knows more about that, I don't come there anymore :)

    @ewpratten Register at riot.im, download one of it's clients (the browser version sucks) and give me your username! It's encrypted because we've got a lot of privacy peoples as well :D

    May be , I have used only Ubuntu and Debian ( for a short time ) , i find it good in desktop . I dont know about the server editions . What alternatives do i have if i dont want to bust my ass just to install an OS ( i meant Arch here ! ) .

    If you know Linux well enough, all distros are the same with different package managers, repositories and settings. So that is they are all effectively the same or can be made the same and you can't hate on that.

    Distrowatch.org is a good site to compare them with.
