CptFox16197yEdge cases like these are why the driver is still supposed to pay attention and be able to react.
Further in the future, I expect driverless cars to be good enough at their job to avoid almost all physically avoidable accidents, and because they're not impatient like us, will most likely avoid taking risks that would lead to these physical check-mates that we can easily see humans getting into.
Remember, they don't have to be perfect, just better than humans ; considering what I've seen from humans, I'd say it's really not that hard (not that self-driving isn't hard, but considering the number of deaths on the road, I wouldn't say it's easy for humans either) -

How about they communicate through an api and they share a plan for avoiding a crash?

CptFox16197y@billgates Current production "self driving" cars still have the steering wheel, and require the driver to have their hands on it, as some of the decision process still isn't fully reliable. For example, most "self driving" will only switch lanes when the driver asks for it by using the blinkers.
Cars without steering wheels who have to wait until the whole decision process for any decision can be made reliably by the on board computer, at which point they'd likely be clever enough to avoid most dangerous situations, like I said in the previous comment. -
Pretty sure they'll be in communication with each other and able to agree upon a life/car saving decision. Non-self driving cars already communicate with each other.
There's a 3 Lane street and 2 self driving cars are in the middle Lane but heading for each other.
What do they do so they don't crash?
What if they can't brake?
