At age of 20, I got hired as junior dev at a mobile gaming company. We were 2 junior devs hired at the same time and one of our senior colleagues made a prank: he came in the office before us and rearranged our offices in a "funny" manner.

Two days later I waited for him to go home. I opened his PC case, removed the power button cable from the motherboard and then re-arranged everything back to normal. Well, I couldn't resist...

Next day he came into the office and, well, surprise... the PC was not starting. He went to the IT department and they spent 4 hours trying to figure out why it was not working. They replaced the CPU, RAM memory, including the PSU.

I had to go and tell them: "maybe it's the power button jack?!".

I got into some problems for that prank. Indeed I crossed a line, but what the hell... that was a bad IT department.

    Indeed, he should have know just after replacing CPU that it is a power issue, if CPU is working and bios fails to check an important hardware part for booting up it will show on screen.

    But damn what you did there is Satan's work πŸ˜‚

    @gitpush Well deserved revenge ^_^

    Sure maybe you went to far but I am just shocked your "it department" didn't figure out it was a unplugged power cable... Maybe they are the ones that should get into a little trouble πŸ˜‚

    @cwizard That was not the power cord, but the power button connection to the motherboard. Basically pressing the power button did not trigger the motherboard to start the PC.

    @m0fo yes that is what I ment with unplugged power cable, I am assuming they moved the pc for the repairs thus plugging the power cable back into the socket after the move.

    Psu doesn't start => swap cpu and ram........ Wat

    @rangler That’s what i’m saying mate :-/.

    @cwizard they did everything under the guy’s office. No moving involved. That’s why I wanted to be understood correctly. Sorry if I sounded rude or anything...

    @m0fo I'm just stating why the it guy is an incompetent :)

    @rangler >.< i am on devrant for some days. Definitely still a junior here as I need to learn the language better for not getting understood wrongly. I was approving your statements, not judging :(

    I don't think any it department should consider human sabotage as a prime cause of a computer problem. I mean okhams razor, usually stuff breaks but power cables do not unplug themselves. Good prank though.

    shit just got real

    Power button unplugged from the motherboard isn't a common issue. So, your it department failing to identify quickly isn't a big thing.
    But damn, that was a great prank!πŸ˜…

    If the dude and the department couldn’t spot a detached power button then they deserve to take shit for it... not you πŸ˜‚
