My mother sits in front of me with her laptop. After a time she asks me, who founded Microsoft. I say: "Bill Gates but why?"
She: "Oh my god, I am winning an iPhone!!!"
I know exactly what's going on, so I go to her and show her the shitty URL and some grammar mistakes in the text and close the tab after explaining that it is phishing.
After that she just looks at me and is sooooo angry about me, because she still thinks that it was real. Only because they "knew which Internet provider we were using and that they just wanted to reward us for being customer!!!". I'm so sad now, because I never thought she would fall for sth. like this... 😔

    And later they ask him for his username and password for whatever to fix his problems...

    Install a adblocker.
    Best, if you install one on the router eg. load a recent IP blacklist. There are some good ones on Github.

    Helping her by whitelisting stuff, when something gets blocked, that she want to use is a lot easier than fixing the mess, she might accidentally create because of phishing and adds. Mostly it will make them just leave shady websites, because they don't work.

    In my opinion adblocking far more important than antivirus, cleaner and similar waste of resources.
    Especially on inexperienced, elder or just dumb peoples computers.

    Adding a scriptblocker might also help. Whitelist everything and just block Java and Flash stuff.

    The problem is, that my mother is pretty independent browsing the internet. The scaryer it is, that she thinks this is real. She would never allow me to "modify her internet".

    I know. My Parents are too.
    But installing Adblocker won't hurt anyway and will surely keep trouble away.

    @rhein7 If you have access to the router's configuration, you can always plant a Pi-hole somewhere in the house and change the DNS to force other machines to use it. You be a ninja adblocker can claim you never "modified her internet" that way 😁

    @Shodan
    I have access but I think this would be too much work for 1 p/w (Phish per week), because all my Raspberrys are in use...
