You are clearly demotivated and have no passion or interest in the area of work you are subjecting yourself to. So take some time, think about what problems you really want to solve, what software you would love to build, or what cause really burns a fire inside you and start looking for a dev role that will inspire you to produce, progress and push through tough problems and feel a real sense of achievement. -
Okay, straight off the bat, "build a trading bot" is not a task, it is a project. If you are working for a trading software company, then it is on them to scope it out, do the research, break it up into epics/stories, gather the requirements and prioritise them for you. If they don't know anything about trading, but want you to build a trading bot, what sort of cowboy company are you at? What is their supposed industry?
Further to this, why are you at a company building trading software if you have no interest in trading? The answer could well be above that they didn't advertise themselves as such, however if that isn't the case and you were simply chasing the money, here is a lesson in why software development is a labour of love and simply going for the biggest salary often isn't conducive to passion and productivity. If you are someone that can write code for anyone and for any purpose and you don't care why, you are what I like to call a "code monkey".

@pablochocobar So pretty inconsistent messaging then, but if it was said back in orientation, then maybe just forget about it and do what you think is best until it is possibly brought up. Induction processes and new starter orientations can often be a bit of an afterthought in teams so you can probably take it with a pinch of salt.

If you are being explicitly asked not to copy code, I'd wonder how obvious it is that you are doing so.
By all means, you should copy good code examples, but you should ensure you understand it and that you adapt it to your unique working environment. It should not be your first resort to look for existing examples to copy and paste into your work, you should try and solve the problem yourself and then look up solutions to issues when they stump you. You should also be working within the coding standards and best practices of your team that are often at a higher level than a piece of random code from the internet. You shouldn't need a senior to tell you that. If a senior expects you to not use the resources you have at hand, such as the internet and Stack Overflow, then that should be questioned also. -

Definitely feeling the first one. In the same place at my job currently. Finding it harder and harder to muster the motivation and it's affecting my productivity. I am biding my time to move jobs but it is pretty inevitable in 2021 I think, just can't be bothered with the recruitment/application circus yet.

@delete this is what I do also. Light theme at work in the day and dark theme at home on my personal laptop as if I'm going to be doing anything on that, it will normally be in the evening.

@jase oh man, so sorry to hear that. Was hoping it would have been possible changes that helped improve your sleeping. Life can deal some pretty rough hands but sometimes the best you can do is keep fighting to be the fire that continues to burn for those you love and those you lose. I hope things get easier with time for you and you can use those experiences as your fire and your strength eventually to shine a light for those that are still there for you

Until I shower in the morning, I barely function as a human. The challenge is getting from the bed to the shower! And over 28 years I have grown a biological resistance to alarms..

@Tawzer yea, I dunno, I think if I'm thinking it, other hirers might do too. I think you'd be better off getting certifications that cover PC hardware and concepts behind that as a whole (whether it's a PC hardware, networking or infrastructure course), but that's just how I see it

I do understand the value of perhaps a Microsoft certification I guess, but they have propriatery technologies, like .Net or C#. So they are only Microsoft things. But a Dell certification, they don't make anything that other companies don't also make? It's just packaged and branded. This is honestly perplexing me haha!

Okay.. I'm a dev, so might not fully grasp the value of something like this from an IT/hardware perspective, but why would a certification for a brand make any sense? Surely you should be studying general, transferable concepts surrounding the product a specific brand produces rather than the specifics of a Dell PC or setup? This makes no sense to me? So you have HP pcs which work the exact same way, but you're only learning how to work with Dell PCs? I'm confused?

It's all too easy to dwell on what you feel is missing, but if you take yourself on a journey of self first, find the reason you got into Dev in the first place and explore that further. Think about the possibilities it has presented you and the many it could open up in the future. Think about what you want to do with that power, think about the things you want to change, whether that is making the world a better place, solving a problem you think no one has given the time of day it deserves or connecting people and the understandings we share to bring out the best in others. Grab that by the balls and run with in, in everything you do and every decision you make. It may not be immediately apparent, but people will start to notice that you stand for something and fight to see it a reality.

You should start by making yourself the first person on that list of people who care about what you do and make. Finding that passion for what you are doing regardless of what other people may think might seem like a difficult path at first, but that passion and determination to achieve and communicate your vision really does draw people in. More importantly, it will open up an environment where the people you do surround yourself with can really matter and have meaning.

It is a good way to learn. Some prefer more assistive learning, i.e. have the text editor/IDE suggest things/complete things for you and learn from that, but I do think that I prefer working out how to form the complete picture myself by typing everything out and then obviously code completion is great later on. As was said, I do believe it is a more thorough way of learning and leads to to be more considerate about formatting and neat code etc.

1. devRant's character limit is pretty generous. Acronyms make my skin crawl.
2. Be frank, tell them your goals but be prepared to embrace new skills a little off track if they at least add a tool to your belt, but be sure that they will not get in the way of the direction you want to be headed. If your employee can't help you realise your career goals and tailor your skills appropriately, then they are of no use to you and you should fuck them off.
