For some reason my brain read "back flip"
-
@dr-ant I had a similar experience. I decide I wasn't making any progress with ether because doing so mostly just confuses your brain. So in the end I commited fully to Dvorak (I even use it on my phone keyboard) and accepted loosing the ability to touch type in QWERTY. This can be annoying at work when you're trying to use someone else's keyboard. I think it's possible to revert to QWERTY if I needed to, But you can always switch back briefly without the need to touch type because the letters are printed on the right keys. I suggest commiting fully to Dvorak and stick with it as much as possible to avoid confusing your brain. It'll take a couple of weeks before it starts becoming second nature. Just don't do it in the middle of a uni assignment!
-
I made the switch to Dvorak just before starting a 2 week uni assignment, a few of my classmates were trying it too but gave up in the end. I was the only one who persevered through, and I'm glad I did. After 12 months using it, I don't think my speed has improved so much, but typing definitely feels more comfortable, and it has benefited my wrists, along with a more ergonomic keyboard.
My tip would be don't try switching back and forth for things that feel difficult or need doing in a hurry. You need to stick with one layout to get your brain used to it. Also be aware that you'll loose the ability to type in QWERTY over time, so you can't use your co-workers keyboards, but it's very funny when they try to use yours... -

@jackconnorhull to be fair, I've been experiencing I serious drop in typing speed since converting to Dvorak. It takes time to rebuild speed.
-
@jackconnorhull your apology is accepted but your typing speed is not. :P

Me: Just use git!
Mac User: What's that?
Me: It's an open source co-developing tool.
Mac User: Ew I'm not using that, open source stuff is dangerous...
(Genuine conversation with a co worker a while ago) -
@FrodoSwaggins Yeah @sSam do your laundry Jesus!
Seriously though you two, chill out. People type in different ways, e.g. I touch type in Dvorak keyboard. While some people literally use 2 fingers. It's not a race 😆 -

We're not paid to come up with the ideas. We're paid to make them: http://dreamincode.net/forums/...

@Pandentia Welcome to the world of developing.
-
Not even telling him that it was developed by Linus Torvalds, or that our employer uses it was enough to convince him otherwise.
-
I tried to get one of my colleagues to start using git for a collaborative project. He went to the git download page (on his macbook) and started to complain the "oh it's open source... I don't use open source stuff, it can't be trusted."
-
@Teknas I put that on to piss off the apple fanboys. It works.
-
@Doomenik Use 'Search Google for image'
-
@Jakuho Oh I watch a lot of computerphile. I use to sit in class after finishing all my work and watch videos. My teacher wouldn't mind because it was 'topical'. I'm more looking for something I can stick on while I'm driving or going to sleep.
-
@CWins Yeah, they had him using IE9 instead
-
I've wanted to try this for so long. Unfortunately I never think to pack an Ethernet cable when I go on holiday.
-
Good idea for a drinking game:
Get quite drunk and come up with an idea for a silly project, then begin to code it until you A) pass out, or B) give up and go to bed.
The next morning open up your project to see what on earth you were doing. -
I also can vouch for the Bose headphones. My friend in my IT class got a pair (QuietControl 30 Bluetooth earphones - £259) and we were all very jealous of him. And the teacher would get annoyed when she could never get his attention by shouting at him, even when standing next to him.
-
Well said!
-
@philcr What sort of things do you develop with it?
-
@xalez No VB.NET with Visual Studio
-
The Social Network soundtrack - Makes me feel like a genius with an idea.
Also a bit of C2C music. I like techy sounding stuff when I'm working wizardry with a computer.
Also I wanted a better name for my coding playlist so I came up with this: &("@Coding").attr(); -
