Gods forbid you try to get their exclusive streaming service just so your kids can watch the Fucking Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. No, you have to have an existing apple id, which you can't remember because it was tied to a yahoo email you abandoned long ago. Good luck getting into that shit and recovering the loads of digital music you *didn't* pirate back in the day

So far it's pretty great! Updated the firmware already, it's pretty well documented. It seems to be pretty durable - already knocked it into a few walls and got caught in the rain with it and it seems swell. Battery seems to be discharging at the expected rate. Honestly more every-day-driver-ready than the pinephone was when i got it a year ago. The only thing I need is an alarm and I can ditch my fitbit. I swear that subtle buzz on my wrist has gotten me up on time way more reliably than any other alarm clock feature or device ever has.
-
@jespersh lol I say that because it's scheduled for delivery today, so I'm not talking about a month's long wait
-
@Wisecrack they say that grabbing a camel toe is more ergonomic and better for your wrist posture. So they say...

Update: got some closure and made it back home safe to my family which is all I could ask for.
-
this community is not the place for you. kindly fuck off.
-
ok fair point. pardon my slang, no sexual favors were exchanged for his promotion. i merely meant to communicate that the dude poured his soul into demonstrating his capabilities which warranted the promotion.
-
I'm getting ready to pack and move my family into our first home too, but I've had to be the one to offer everyone else whisky...
still though once we move in I think its the right occasion to cross of the bucket-list item of having a whisky older than I am once we move in (admittedly, that's still a rather achievable bar for me without breaking the bank - especially after closing) -
echoing the whole "no masters" sentiments here.
but what got me to really get working with JavaScript was actually converting it into TypeScript when I had to update an old AngularJS app to Angular 2 for a job. I also came from the .NET ecosystem so that was what put JS into terms I could easily understand. -
you could always have someone -- you to get there?
-
it's a shame I can't ++ more than once yo
-
@SortOfTested JFC don't get me started on that...
"Hey did you make those changes to the Published Language package yet?"
"No, sorry Jeff was busy with the pipelines all day"
"Do you mind if I make those changes then? I have have a PR ready in about 30 minutes and it would unblock me."
"Mmmm... yeah... I think it would be best for the developer who started that project to be the one who modifies it; that way no one gets confused or mistakenly adds something they aren't supposed to"

@netikras totally feel that, which is why one absolutely needs to consider if it is indeed within scope or reason.
I certainly am not going to harp on a teammate for a design/implementation choice if it reasonably accomplishes the task and doesn't glaringly add to tech debt
But also, if you just copy/paste code from another section of the app to "get it done" without bothering to discover that we already created a utility or component or extension method to handle that issue, I'm not gonna just let it go.
I'm sorry if it's unreasonable, but I expect my peers to use their goddamn brains in this occupation. -
Also, your baby yoda custom gif emojis and your custom smart-ass slackbot responses aren't fucking cute either.
-
It's not always by choice.
Sometimes you have real shitheads on your team that you have to go the extra mile to pick up their slack and make sure your projects get finished on time, because your managers sure don't give a flying fuck what the reason is that their expected deadlines are missed. -
depends on what OS your toaster is running I suppose. I have an old thinkpad from 2011 that would cry any time I booted up windows 10; but I wiped it an installed Arch on it, and now everything I put it through runs like a breeze. Granted it has an SSD and an i5 processor which weren't too shabby in it's time, but also only has 4 GB of ram.
-
@kescherRant I mean I too use Arch, but not exclusively. I still find myself bouncing between Ubuntu for work, Arch on one laptop, and a host of different VMs just for shits and giggles. Some people waste time on steam. I fuck around with VMs.
-
I guess one should consider what exactly "most hipster" mean in this context... To which I say, I had nothing particular in mind and am curious as to what everyone else thinks.
-
Update: So far, Arch Linux ARM with Phosh has been the most stable and usable operating system with the device. I mean, aside from dealing with gnome, if feels nice because its most familiar to me now.
-
No one has to know I was sensible enough to add a line and get a new sim card just to be able to experiment with the phone. What can I say? I'm a cheap bastard, people will probably believe I put all my eggs in one basket.
-
@M1sf3t I really do try. Procrasturbation FTW
-
Hmm. That might explain why they pretty quickly switched to shipping these devices with postmarket by default. They sold out of the braveheart edition by the time I got wind of it, so mine is the UBports edition.
-
Was able to get outgoing calls to work by switching my network to 2G. it's a current issue listed for UBports.
As for the warranty, I pretty much chalked it up to:
1. It's relatively cheap
2. It's almost entirely experimental, so expect a lot of work in progress statuses for a while on a lot of items
My plan is to cycle through various available OS to see what I like, and what has the most community input. It seems like a more promising experiment than the raspberry pi was for me. -
well, so far I have been able to send and receive SMS, as well as take incoming calls, however it appears I can't make any outgoing calls. and I do live in the US
-
Whoa now gentlemen. Can't we be civil?
-
@bittersweet very insightful, thanks for sharing! I had only been passively looking up till this point. more so to "hedge my bets" just in case the proverbial shit were to hit the fan. truth is I am relatively happy and well paid where I am, and even have the luxury of being the most tenured dev with the most tribal knowledge where I am currently. and while I'm very cautious to avoid letting this cause me to become complacent, it ultimately is what drives my very aloof attitude towards recruiter interactions these days.
i'm also very aware that recruiters do talk amongst themselves, so I'm cautious to avoid agreeing to too many interviews and subsequently declining their offers so as to not build a bad rep. -
@SortOfTested I absolutely agree, but I feel like the only place to start by being an ally without being a total tool is to at least spread the word and contribute to the conversation. I feel like the alternative for those not impacted is to just stand idly by, which seems worse, no?
-
Man, this gives me a lot of hope. I've been dealing with the same from my company for over 3 years. This is the first major job I've had where I could climb the ladder and actually make a respectable living, but it has made me jaded and cynical, and I even wonder sometimes if I have the skills to cut it at another gig because I feel like I've been pigeon-holed within an outdated stack for a while now.
Happy you moved on to greener pastures! I think this inspires me to look to do the same! -
that's right baby, you coerce that variable. it doesn't need to be my type...
-
@Bybit260 don't you dare kink shame me.
