@astronomicalcat it really depends on what you're doing. But I have liked using Genie. I have also liked using the qt IDE, as well as just plain old gedit.
I don't do much Android/Java stuff, so I can't speak to that.
Don't forget that you need access to a Mac in order to build iOS/tvOS apps. -
@complxalgorithm they are ugly and notoriously uncomfortable. But what I don't understand is why everyone seems to be against wireless headphones. Why is "less wires" a bad thing? I won't be buying AirPods or Beats, but I sure will be getting something else on the market within the next year. Until then, the adapter will work great for me.
The fact that the Moto and the iPhone are doing this is going to push the wireless headphone market forward to being higher quality at a lower price point. More competition.
Besides, anyone who is truly an audiophile is probably using an external DAC and amp for their listening experience anyways. I used to back when I had time/money/care to pursue that hobby. It's not like the built in DAC in Apple's devices has ever won awards...in fact, for a long time, it was known for being garbage (not sure if that's still the case).
And finally...if you're still using an aux cable to listen to music in your car...its probably time for an upgraded stereo. -
@arminiae I have been doing a walk up to the third floor, across the building, down to the first floor, and back up to my second floor office every hour for the last couple weeks. I noticeably feel better, and I am also more aware of not eating a bunch of crap throughout the day simply because I'm thinking about "what's good for my health". It's great.
-
Go to Walmart or Target and snag some $5 reading glasses at lunch maybe? I'm sorry man :/ Sounds like a rough one.
-
@xinuxunil the official adapter only costs $9. It doesn't seem like they are after money at that price point.
And don't forget that the iPhone is not even the first device to nix the 3.5mm port. The Moto was...a popular Android phone.
Just about every decision that Apple makes that people complain about ends up actually being good in the log run. For example, not letting Flash and Java run natively on iOS. People thought it was the end of the world for years. When in reality, they were just killing off stuff that should have died years earlier. Thus forcing us to use newer technology rather than lazily sticking to the mess that we had grown used to.
Why the heck is "less cables" a bad thing to strive for...? -
@kwilliams apparently that's what Microsoft does...charges end of life support fees that are like 400%. This customer is a government entity...figures.
-
Sounds like a professor who doesn't know anything but Win32. Just wait until they try to teach you systems programming in Windows...
As for all the status/performance stuff...I think Macs look great, and I love OS X. I am still using a powerful MacBook Pro that I bought 6 years ago, and it runs incredible still.
And believe it or not, a comparable non-Apple machine is going to set you back about the same amount of cash, but only last half as long. -
Integers cut off the decimal precision. It's a nice way to do a floor...it actually ends up being very convenient in a lot of situations. Learn the rules so you can abuse them! 😜
-
Haha dang. So it isn't even your code. That's lame.
-
Memory issue? Debuggers pack the memory with junk so they can see where bad stuff is happening. It's like putting a chemical in the pool that will turn blue when some kids pees himself. Maybe that is interfering with a memory deeper issue in the app (overflow, reading too big of a buffer somewhere, etc...).
-
Apple has been doing that for years...
-
(I realize that I posted this with the assumption that people reading it are from the US) (don't hate me)
-
@Cube189 ahh, just looked it up again. So the newer plain MacBooks, not the Pros or the Airs. That's Super cool. I am hoping that they release new body colors with the Pros at the next press conference. I would love to get a gray one for my next computer.

@Lukas for what it's worth: yes, many of the company's clients were using the product in the real world. Development was just a mess.
-
@Lukas I don't understand what you are asking. The truth is, I was using it as a contracted software engineer for a company (one of many). I got so fed up with spending more time trying to fix the build because of Xamarin than actually developing anything that I broke off the relationship.
Obviously I tried to do so in a civil way. But that experience left such a bad taste in my mouth for Xamarin. -
Exactly. It was an attempt to make an object oriented C language, and it failed miserably in comparison to C++. It's just a mess.
-
Objective-C is a godawful language.
-
@Matthewb professional? Know what they are doing? You've got to be kidding me. Windows is a mess. I use it at work everyday, and would burn it at the stake if I could.
For the last decade, the only major thing they have done is reskinned the GUI that they are hiding all their crap behind. Every time they try to do anything other than that...anything useful...they break everything else. Because it's absolute crap. -
I had some issues updating a few of my other apps yesterday, if that is useful info at all.
-
@Lukas I've experienced very similar issues with it in the real world.
-
@micheltombroff haha I'm pretty sure that is modded somehow. They are white out of the factory. That's cool.
-
Did you make the logo on your MacBook black instead of white?
-
What happened to the decrypt part of your program...?
-
Apple has been more open than Windows for a long time. The majority of OS X, iOS, and tvOS is open source even. Look up Darwin.
-
@SirWindfield I mean, they do have UI files called Storyboards, and a designer program for them called Interface Builder.
xCode also has built in scene editors for when you are making games with SpriteKit.
But again, all of that is iOS dependent because they are simply tools to the native libraries available on that platform. If someone ported Swift to Android, they would have to expose Androids UI libraries to Swift...most likely allowing you to use normal Android interface design files. -
@SirWindfield I did, yeah. There is a fairly strong community backing the Linux port of it as well (in fact, I think Apple directly works on it as well). I can't speak to that part of it though as I haven't tried it yet.
-
@krupal55 I believe that in Swift 3, the apparent "reliance" on Apple's Objective-C libraries for actual iOS development is supposed to look a lot different. The reality, though, is that those aren't actually the Swift language. That's like saying the Win32 API is a part of the C/C++ language.
All that said, I just started messing around with Swift and I think it's awesome. Simple, powerful, beautiful. It's very very readable, and also very writable. I would love to see some active development on libraries and bindings for it on more platforms. -
@Treebasher granted you can always just re-theme Ubuntu too. Look into gtk-themes and stuff...
-
Ubuntu is a great general purpose distro. But personally, I think it is ugly as hell.
Check out Elementary OS and/or Linux Mint. Both are forks of Ubuntu (so the guts are essentially the same), but both are also WAY more beautiful.
P.s. that laptop looks freaking dope haha. -
@mxdpeep those schools don't define "student" in the traditional sense. They look at so much more than your high school GPA.
