@b3b3 Ubuntu can be a bit of a mixed bag, I agree. From my experience, staying on LTS releases never breaks the system. I've found regular support releases to be far less stable, so I generally recommend newcomers to use Ubuntu LTS.
-
Because these are user friendly and stable-for-the-user distros. The Arch community doesn't like admitting it much and will probably downvote me for this but Arch is not stable by any means! Packages break in Arch quite often and I've had quite a few kernel panics after updating the kernel. This doesn't happen on Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros. Nowadays it doesn't happen on Fedora either. In fact, Fedora recently has grown to be really stable, fast and user friendly. As for Zorin OS, it's just meh...I can't think of many reasons to care about it if you can just go for Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
-
Your school computers have Linux installed? 😱😱😱😃😃😃
-
Funny, that's the ONLY thing I expect from Apple.

My HTC 10 saves RAW images when shooting in Pro mode.

Found a brother with an HTC 10! Awesome!

Constant shit? Someone's had a rough day lol.

@Bikonja I do think that Google should've added some idiot proofing to setText by making another setText() function in the TextView class that takes int as a parameter and parses it. Nevertheless, anyone who's been programming in Android for more than 5 minutes knows that you're supposed to pass a string to TextView. You can always look up the documentation (Android Studio even has an option to show documentation on mouse hover).
-
Oh cut it with the shit posts...TextView.setText() expects a string to be passed as a parameter, not an integer.

@AngryDev Seems like you were particularly unlucky as you're the first person I know of who has experienced such issues with Dell and Lenovo laptops. Those things tend to be built like a tank (the worst thing that happened when my laptop fell was that the hdd disconnected, fixing it was as easy as opening the plastic cover of the laptop and inserting the hdd back in). To put things into comparison, my Mum's Mac Mini 2012 started overheating immediately after being plugged into a 1080p screen (as opposed to a 1280x1024 screen it previously had been connected to), that's a computer with an Intel HD 4000 iGPU and a quad core i7 CPU. In the meantime not only did my DELL remain cool while plugged into a 1080p screen it also remained cool while gaming in 1080p (and I actually don't ever remember the laptop overheating, no matter what task was thrown at it), the laptop also has an Intel HD 4000 iGPU but it has a dual core i5.
-
@Numinex What I see is that most complaints are about Apple computers. I've personally never had an issue with Dell or Lenovo, which cost 10x less.
-
Everybody always brags about the build quality of Apple computers, yet I keep seeing posts like this pop-up. My cheap ass DELL laptop from 2013 has been torturted through and through (fell down the stairs, thrown while in my backpack, dropped a few times from more than a meter's height, etc.) and still works like new.

What's all this about Android Studio being slow? I've got it running absolutely smoothly on a laptop with an i5-3337U and 6 gigs of RAM.
-
@DVZ96 You should continue with Java first and only move to Kotlin when you feel like you understand Java well enough. Java is still the dominant language in Android development, that means that most tutorials use Java and most developers as well. What I'm saying is, Kotlin is great and I recommend learning and using it, but before you do you should have the ability to comfortably switch to Java if necessary.

Oddly enough I never had such replies in my CS class. When I confirmed that it was Linux the only replies I got "I heard it's much better than Windows, is it true?" to which I always reply with a yes, of course.

Kotlin rules! -
@Electrux Well, first of all, GTK and QT are frameworks used to develop GUI applications. They don't really have much to do with Linux itself as both frameworks are also available under Windows. But as far as desktops go, the fact that you can choose how your system will look like is an advantage as far as I'm concerned. As for the X server configs, why do you need to configure the X server so much? What GPU do you have? I have R9 290s in crossfire and I'm just using the open-source driver that comes with Fedora and it all runs very well. Also had a very good experience with Intel iGPUs on Linux, their drivers are nearing perfection, no need to configure anything at all and everything just works.
-
@xsacha Wow, it's quite sad that one company could impact an entire market of people so easily by simply making their software exclusive.
-
@chadd17 I find it hard to believe that Mac is easier to use/works better out-of-the-box than Ubuntu for example. I actually had my Mum use Linux for a good while, after I gave her a tutorial of how the UI works she started using it without any issues. Now one of my brothers bought her a Mac and it's quite frequent now that she has issues with the computer, and, surprisingly enough, so do I. Macs are very biased towards Apple software and hardware, using anything that isn't made by Apple causes issues (which are fixable, but annoying nonetheless).
-
What reason could you possibly have for doing that?
-
@dannydam PS: Sorry for the long rant. I've just been annoyed by this crap for a really long time now.

This hurts us audiophiles the most. Bluetooth isn't a good solution if you want the best audio quality (they claim that Bluetooth 5.0 is "lossless" but I never trusted wireless technology enough to believe claims like this) and there aren't many good USB headphones out there. 3.5mm is still a standard in anywhere but phones (and a good one, it has no flaws and USB-C is no better at reproducing sound than it), and since headphones intended for professional use still come with it I doubt that the jack will ever stop being used. Now, I bought good earphones, earphones that weren't cheap. Why should I replace them for something ultimately shittier? As for the phones themselves, I've got the HTC 10. The HTC U11 measurements came out and I was surprised to see that it's audio quality had totally gone to shit. So far the only real replacement for my phone is the Xperia XZ Premium. I hope that companies like Sony and Samsung will keep rebelling against shitty practices like this.

I'm just an Android Development student, but to be honest his code, at least to me, looks pretty good. Remember that 2.5 years of experience coding isn't that much, and the man probably just didn't know of a better way to do this, this definitely doesn't make him a bad programmer or revoke him of potentially becoming a great one.

You're probably using Unity, aren't you? May I suggest using GNOME? It's cleaner, it's a lot more customizable and it's the future of Ubuntu. Right now I am using Fedora 26 with GNOME 3.24, I am using a shell and GTK theme called Equilux which looks really cool and has material design animations, a Paper icon theme and breeze dark cursors. All in all I am not missing the Windows at all. Not in design nor practicality, and definitely not in performance and stability.
-
I mean, that's definitely code on the screen, it just looks all Sci-Fi and stuff.
-
@rusty-hacker Interesting. Has anyone tested this?

As someone who's into android development I've thought about learning to develop for iOS just in case I'll ever want/need to release an app for both platforms. Android Studio is available for Windows/Mac/Linux/Toaster/whatever, once I found out about the exclusivity of Xcode my thoughts were exactly like yours.
