Can confirm.
Source : I'm a penguin. -
@just8littleBit
And if it's an IT Manager, pull the trigger anyway. The world of true IT professionals thanks you for your service. -
Sounds like there is an incompetent manager in the way that decides on that for you... And they look good if they save money, so no bonus for you.
Basically, it's incentive thought wrong. The C levels think all they need are managers to get the job done.
Prove them wrong by quitting. -
It's an IT Manager. You're a Dev. You'll learn to hate him. Trust me on that.
-
@Oktokolo Yeah, I did. It's supposed to be a dystopia, but then again, we are moving straight towards making it reality.
IMO, staying in shape is the socially responsible thing to do, plus, there are a lot of egoistic reasons to put in the work. -
Enjoy yourself!

I'm more of a fundamental analysis kind of person - and once an asset is added onto my list, it stays there unless something hits the fan.
After that, I just mostly sell put options on that asset until one gets executed, after which I switch to calls with the strike somewhere above what I've paid for the stock.
Currently doing this for 10ish assets, it's about 15 minutes a day to take care of.
(I'm planning on automating the whole news thing to save time on that).
Checking out a new company takes 2 to 4 hours and results in a dossier on economical, ethical, environmental and then some more factors I consider important.
Charts don't really matter all that much to me, as I'm a long term investor. -
Same here, just with Sunless Seas.
Who cares if it doesn't use 100 percent of your hardware? Just have fun. -
@electrineer Well, that was a job these days too.
I mean, there's a reason why folks call it the dark age.
(then again, we could bring that back for idiotic IT managers. Talk too much shit, you get a round in the brazen bull). -
@Voxera Medieval Reenactment? That sounds really cool, you mean like those medieval fairs?
-
@Oktokolo Am I the only one around here who could easily walk that last mile, and regularly does so?
-
@AtuM Pro Tip: take up something that involves teamwork and / or social responsibility.
That's something many interviewers consider a good thing, plus, you can grab some karma and do something for the community. -
Three 5k runs a week, two sessions of bodyweight exercises.... And I'm trying to incorporate a run at the local fitness trail.
Plus, my membership at the volunteer fire department and my side gig as a security guard do help. -
Just use the entire story as plain text. If their security is any good, it'll work.
-
What if beers don't do the trick and once requires blunts or bowls?
Is that a separate rating or just an order of magnitude? -
@Root someone took the time to make this. I like it.
-
I been made to do this by a client.
Optimize their 20yo, mission critical Excel-sheet-turned-SQL-DB instead of taking both it and its creator (who was still holding a fairly influential position in the company) out into the woods.
I quit. So did my junior. And the two trainees who were supposed to replace us. -
@johnmelodyme Yeah. If it comes down to you having to drop that bid due to this person's actions, and you're thinking of suing them, please consult a lawyer first.
I'm just a random penguin on some social media platform. Although judges and such occasionally dress up like penguins that doesn't mean I, as a penguin, know the law well enough to give advice on it. -
@johnmelodyme Yeah, but consult your lawyer first please. I don't know the situation you're in.
But I'd definitely show the client what that code looked like when you started. Maybe they'll throw in a bonus, or are little more understanding when there are delays. -
@johnmelodyme hm... I'm just thinking, if you have to drop the bid because of that former employees actions, that person may be liable (of course, depending on your jurisdiction) for the damages caused to both you and the client.
But that's just my 2 Cents. -
@johnmelodyme phew, good luck with that.
-
@johnmelodyme Oh shit...
I sure hope your IDE has a good refactoring function because you'll need it. -
Now that is a highly professional way of leaving the company.
Please tell me they have git so all it took to fix this was a quick revert? -
@pipe Okay then, I'm gonna juxtapose a joint on a couple beers then. 🍻
-
@rantsauce Well, great minds think alike... So why shouldn't we?
-
Who would still use gay as an insult?
The 90s are calling, they want their attitude back. -
And that is what I call cargo cult management.
Since they don't have jack shit of an idea how to run a successful business, they just end up imitating the easy parts of others.
That's their "business research" you're hearing about. Some successful company, probably Crapple, made one of their buttons gray, so now you're expected to make the same thing happen, because of a classic logical fallacy :
* Crapple is successful
* Crapple is using gray buttons
Therefore : Anyone using gray buttons will be successful.
They've never been taught basic logic, so this makes total sense to them.
Add a massive bit of both confirmation bias and Dunning Kruger effect to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.
BTW : look up cargo cults if you haven't. It's an amazing story behind them that might just tell you a thing or ten about human behavior. -
@AlgoRythm That's how it should be, yeah. But once you call something ready and you first let the unwashed masses use it in ways you never imagined, you're bound to discover some more issues.
-
Juxtaposition? That sure is a weird way to spell "alcohol and drugs", but you do you.
-
@pipe It's a really strong beer that's brewed in the spring.
