Thanks for the input everyone. Current update, the entire US office had a meeting and we've pretty much refused. Sounds like we're going to move to a timer system instead. So that's kind of a win. I feel like there has to be a way to judge productivity based on output. Are our managers that clueless as to what we do?
-
@SortOfTested Yeah, if you go as far as putting it on your LinkedIn then you're probably that sort :p
-
@SortOfTested I kind of agree. But I think most people want to feel welcome where they work. When I was younger I worked construction in Montana and hated having to bite my tongue and put up with ignorant pricks all day. I could see certain office cultures feeling oppressive on the other spectrum. Now that politics seems to be tied to everything.
-
Politics aside: I know of one company considering remote pay rates based on the average in your location. Another option was a flat percentage above that average. I'd kind of like to live in the woods. Not for political reasons. But if you made San Francisco dev salary in some of those places you'd be king. That's an insensitive for companies to hire rural devs. For better or worse.
-
@Demolishun haha...that's dark man. Did you just finish reading The Gulag Archipelago? You're not wrong though. This is a global company. So the revolt would be the entire US office at least. Which is 15. I don't think they'd close the whole US office. But anythings possible.
-
@dan-pud Yeah, I did some digging. Legally because of the ECPA, SCA, and GDPR they can pretty much do whatever on their computers. I'm hoping as employees maybe we can revolt!
-
@Mizz141 Obviously...I’m ranting about my company’s arcane tools!
-
@spongessuck I love how the term college student has become a slur in tech :p A kid I went to code Bootcamp with recently got hired at Nike in a department who’s manager adamantly refuses to hire any college grads.
-
@Godisalie Yeah...build yourself a solar powered robot army that can harvest crops, protect your property, and battle each other for your amusement ;)
-
@ste09 Exactly what I was thinking.
-
@biscuit Dang...just straight beans! That sounds painful. I'd grind that shit up first...espresso grind.
-
If I leave my phone on the bathroom floor I usually have more to worrie about the next morning than a dead battery :p
-
I've only recently started coding but I've gotten myself unstuck several times now doing that. Then sleep comes easy!
-
What's really funny are the alcohol swabs. How many junkies ever use those? That's a detail only a nerd would put in :p
-
@tahnik Turned a one sentence joke into three sentences. Not most efficient method but somehow made it funnier.
-
Just saw a rant about exorcism.io Sounds like it might fit what you're looking for. Plus they give feedback and advice based on your answers supposedly.
-
Lately I've been listening to YouTube playlists. I found a couple really good Japanese jazz composers on there. Takuya Kuroda and Ryo Fukui. I've been hooked on those two while I'm coding.
-
Actually, now that I see some of the cats I kind of want one. They are really cute.
-
@phuzisham That was snarky as fuck. You can't blame a company for wanting a to get some compensation for providing a platform like this. I just can't see blowing money on fake pets for an avatar that no one cares about but you.
-
How nice of them to offer these things for sale. What an altruistic organisation.
-
@ryanmhoffman You said it. We're supposed to rant on here so I'm just doing my part. Besides, ranting about rants is totally meta.
-
@Pac23 Being forced into college for visa requirements really sucks. The point of my rant was that in America at least, it's no longer a requirement to get your foot in the door.
@jAsE I think college in most countries is a fraud on some level. Most degrees could be trimmed down a few years and a few thousand dollars if they focused only on required skills. But there are a lot of antiquated ideas in universities that just won't die. -
@justasithlord Yeah that was below the belt. You just got me all worked up ;)
-
@justasithlord Do they teach English at your school? ("then there won't a point"--direct quote) You said you tried to convince your parents to let you quit. Now you're saying it was your decision. It doesn't matter. You're going to have an advantage over anyone without a degree (assuming equal skill) for all management positions. You're set up to have a really comfortable life. Just be grateful! That's all I'm saying.
-
@justasithlord Maybe you should have said that to yourself before you started whining then. The real reason you're staying in school is because it's the safe route. Trying it on your own merit is scary.
-
@justasithlord This is one of the only industries where you can get a decent job without a degree. If you think you have the skills, put a portfolio together and quit school. What do you mean your parents won't allow it? How old are you? Are they going to disown you or cut your inheritance? Just be grateful you're in a position that you can go to college and obviously have a support system to help you along.
