@Linux
I can't use the third party software as getting it approved wouldn't happen until the new year.
If I'm lucky. -
@Linux
😿😿😿😿
I wish I could but the host is Windows 7.
Getting the server side approved and packaged for our systems would take forever.
I just wish we would switch to Linux. -
Thanks for all the recommendations, I ended up going with infinityfree for web hosting and zoho for my email.
Will see how it goes.
My old host just seems to have gone down. -
@afrometal you can use Mono on Linux, works really well. The control software for my 3d printer it's C# and runs perfectly fine on Linux.
-
The labels should at least be primary and secondary.
Although I do use my mouse left handed and right click by pressing the left button. -
@WinnieThePooh
-
.+?@.+?\..+
Maybe
Probs still not fully representative -
@Chamxy that's my point though, if it is being touted as a possible replacement it should be able to compete for similar tasks.
-
@SoulSkrix yeah I hate to admit that I was similar too.
I think we all have a duty to steer the new generation away from our past fuck ups. Although we should let them make enough mistakes to learn on their own too. -
@Skayo
Seriously though, focus your energy on something more productive, it will be far more rewarding in the long run. Learn something new grow your knowledge, you will never regret it. Dick with people and we'll never get our flying cars 😢. -
@Skayo it's still no real excuse, it does not make you a bad ass hacker it makes you a dumb arse troll.
Until that pc is fixed you have deprived anyone from being able to use it, meaning they will not be able to learn or do something productive.
What if that pc being down prevents a budding computer scientist from learning something new, they move onto something else, fast forward 20 years and the guy who was destined to make the next big CS breakthrough is doing something else instead. You could have literally set back the human race's development by centuries.
Do you really want that hanging over you, it's because of people like you that we don't have flying cars and all those future techs we were promised in the 50s - 80s, the people destined to invent and perfect the technologies were dicked around by people like you, they never stood a chance. 😓
😂 -
I feel an idea forming.
So I presume most people will have seen: http://www.99-bottles-of-beer.net before.
Would it be possible to do something similar for a simplistic OS.
I'm thinking a very basic os spec as a common reference (boot, load whatever drivers for display and input and do some sort of difficult processing)
Accept submissions of the os in any language and compare stats. A nice benchmark for low level coding.
It would be interesting to see how something like go compares to c for this kind of thing.
It would however rely on being able to compile to a bootable image without having to fall back on c for example as then your just admitting your language can't do what c can and invalidating the point.
A true replacement should be able to achieve this and be easier than the existing solutions.
I do accept that a boot loader may need to be written in assembler but this could be a common component that all submissions have to use.
Thoughts? -
@Froot this is true and it's why we are looking at model based approaches backed by c/C++.
How much easier are the newer languages when it comes to implementing a complex solution.
I'd be interested in seeing a real world comparison. -
@eArshdeep foo evolved as a polite alternate to fu they sound similar. The original meaning isn't widely known as foobar is now the general term.
It's just an evolution of term as it has changed from a way to describe a horrific scene to a humorous variable stand in.
You are witnessing the evolution of our language taking place. It's quite fascinating. -
I mean I could see us maybe moving to Kotlin for the stuff we currently use java for.
But aviation certified devices are a different thing. Even if you ignore the heart attack the certification guys would have there simply isn't any tool support. I don't see us running anything like go on top of vxworks for example. The whole industry would have to switch and spend time to get it all certified and have the demand for the tooling to update.
I'm just not sure what the point is when c and c++ are perfectly competent at doing the job, especially when the languages are still evolving (well c++ anyway)
I think it just comes down to the right tool for the job. Maybe one day that will change but I'm under no illusions that it will be quick.
I just don't understand the is old it must be bad argument.
We're not firing 40+yo devs just because we have a new set of 21yo graduates starting why should we do the same with the languages. -
Great post, loved it 😂
-
@Batburger I would love a fedora cluster/data centre so I could name it hat shop.
-
@elazar seriously this is the second time today that a rant hasn't refreshed for me and I've posted the exact same thing as someone else.
It's not even like our posts are close together either.
:(
Sorry for duplicating. -
@justwellbrock well foobar is negative to start with.
It's a bastardisation of FUBAR an old military saying meaning Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition.
It was what they used to describe when someone caught the wrong end of a shell or grenade, etc.
I do find it interesting how it has cemented itself inside the tech community. -
It should really be FU and BAR.
But seriously foobar is a lot safer than the guy who exclusively used 4 later words and got fired. -
Commenting as interested.
-
@CoffeeAndHate we once had a script that recursively called itself after sshing into the next pc in an ip range ejecting the CD drive as it went along, all the lab PCs had sequential ips so you got this nice cascade effect as it ran.
The solution the school came up with was to use slot loading cd drives, no more drawers no more problem. -
@clovisIrex

Any recommendations for a vdsl 2 router compatible with EE in the UK.
-
So turns out it may be TR-069 that their using to control the router remotely. Not so bad as I originally thought.
But still changing settings that I have disabled is unacceptable and I will replace your shitty piece of future landfill as soon as I can find a replacement. -
@JonnyCodewalker
I suspect it's in the 1000 page tos somewhere.
The fact that they thought turning on the wifi would increase the upload speed is horrifying. -
Unfortunately not, that's why the work was turned off.
The isp router is set up with everything turned off but the internet connection, a cable then goes to my ddwrt router which is set as dmz on the isp router.
Essentially I use the isp router as a modem.
Might need to look into a replacement now though. -
It gets worse if you want to have two workbooks side by side on two monitors.
Last time I tried to get multi instances working I broke excel to the point it wouldn't open files anymore. -
So it all worked, couple of packages missing and a few things I'd change co the next version.
It is so nice having a full gui during install though.
Managed to get my laptop set up in no time. -
@tracktraps yeah most of my time is being spent trying to get everything perfect.
I think if the next iteration boots I may have to call it a day.
