@isaacWeisberg umm.. no.
IMO, being bisexual doesn't give you the right to use gay in a derogatory manner any more than Hispanics can use the n-word because they have *some* African heritage...
Edit: this isn't meant to be oppressive or to censor your speech, but I'm calling it *rude*, and I think it kind of perpetuates bigotry subtly. -
@Letmecode yeah, I don't get it either.
By analogy, nano is notepad and vim is more like notepad++.
I get that some people can program in notepad/nano just fine... but why not use something with syntax highlighting, project-wide searching and plugins? -
I think part of the problem is that people grow up thinking a computer is a magic box, and don't understand the underlying hardware. If you don't understand how memory is structured and how CPU instructions operate on memory, the concept of getting the address of a block of data seems alien.
Couple that with people learning high level languages before the low-level languages, and you'll find people try to bring their high-level programming methodologies to the low level languages.
They soon realize its requires a different type of problem-solving and they have to modify their logic so to speak. -
@divil everyone does drugs, even people who think they don't. I once found a job posting that tested for Nicotine. NICOTINE, not cigarettes.
So if you have nicotine gum or are on the patch, you're not good enough for those employers. F them, that's almost fascist. -
@Eariel why choose one over the other? I can type way faster than I can click... every modern OS has a desktop UI and a way to access the console. -shrug-
Check out powershell on Windows😎 -
@brod It's sounds like you've never had chronic pain, a depressive episode, or mental instability.
I'm not sure if you make a practice of questioning your beliefs, or even trying to see things from someone else's point of view.
But whether you're aware of it or not, the implication of what you're saying (and the premise behind drug testing) is that people with health issues and drug problems don't deserve employment (at least where YOU work), even if they can keep their shit together.
Edited: removed an assumption about you. -
I believe my manager is going to retire soon, and this is what im noticing about my own office too...
-
We have a CS tech who does this at company meetings. Everyone hates him. (there's an audible sigh when he speaks up)

Ive noticed meteor apps are hard to put behind a reverse proxy if they're configured a certain way.
there's this ROOT_URL variable that's used all over the place (but not quite everywhere)
What ends up happening is the proxied meteor app loads, but the JS code continues trying to use AJAX or websockets on localhost and everything is ruined. 😱
Good luck serving the app from multiple internal company URL as well as a public URL 😲
Is this just me / the app in question? -
@DavidKevork You shouldn't trust doctors too much, either. They probably hate me, BC I ask too many questions, but I always make sure to double check doses... injections into the wrong arm...😂
Hope your recovery goes well -
@jAsE depends on the cause and how much anaesthetic they used. I think if they overdose you, you die peacefully...
Id be lying to say im fearless about going under, but I get nervous in airplanes, inside buildings in earthquake zones, so eventually I learned to tune that out
Everyone dies... Its the slow deaths that freak me out most, like being trapped under building rubble for 12 hours.
But yeah... minor surgery isn't too bad. For the wisdom teeth and tonsil procedure I believe they use a smaller dose so you're barely under -
@jAsE PS, if you've never been tested for sleep apnea, you could also die in your sleep.
Take it from me... as someone who's had his tonsils removed, wisdom teeth removed, have had multiple endoscopies, and more....
You WANT to be under for those procedures. And say you do die in your sleep. Its better to die surrounded with doctors who might revive you with paddles and monitor you...
Also consider the people who overdose on opiates and other drugs every day....
That's why I say being under for surgery isn't so bad. Just don't lie on the medical forms, and make sure they know your weight. 😂
Its scary, and were fragile, but were also not fragile. Y'know? -
They got their heads so far up their ass, they forgot about employees onsite... those a-holes might not even retain clients if it wasn't for you..
Sometimes I wish unions would make a comeback. 😈🙊 -
Theyre doing similar things where I work. They gathered us up, told us we need to come up with creative ideas for demos, tech shows, etc....
At the end of the meeting:
"Anybody think this isn't going to work? Don't be shy, we wanna hear from you.
The QA department people looked at each other and one answered:
" ...We're already backlogged, and we cant speak for the devs, but everyone seems to be busy."
This was two months ago. Fast forward to today:
* Number of mandatory meetings doubled for devs
* Everyone is too busy working on the product (except for me, I get to build hardware systems, yay /s)
* Nobody feels more creative
* My manager shoots down project ideas.
My conclusion: The meeting organizers meant "we want you guys to do some of of our marketing for us, and to work extra hours (for free) so that you can come up with new product ideas we can exploit. We wont bother modernizing our processes and teaching everyone how to use IT automation software in the dev lab" -
@Xpenz I like the litter box foot rest. I heard cat poop is good for the skin.
-
@cankarales Right here! :highfive !
And all my coworkers give me shit for it when I slip up, too.
You'd think there would be a whole set of tools dedicated to preformatting code when you load it, and converting it so it matches the style of the project it when you commit, but I've never seen anything like that actually in use. -
Are you me??? If its not one thing, it's the other. There's always one or two servers that have misconfigured/malfunctioning RAID and go into boot loops. And these machines take about 10 minutes to boot. 😵😱
-
@taylorviktorya Maybe Pollen? Mould?
-
@trogus thanks for the new skin tones!!
My only gripe is that there's no dark brown hair color... Mine's almost black, but not quite jet black... 😛
But im sure that will come with time.
Love the art style and this platform so far.... -
That's terrible irony... (guess they don't eat their own dogfood?)
-
@Many Unfortunately, I'm not in charge of the network topology. I'm just affected by how bad it is. I don't even have VMs running on these systems, the VMs I mentioned were someone else's.
-
@kunashe thanks! The worst part is, even though I'm technically a developer, I spend at least 70% of every project wrangling machine issues. 😵
-
@Huuugo @aravindio yeah, it depends on the show, or movie. CSI has a famous scene... https://youtu.be/hkDD03yeLnU
But I've seen actual Bash and sudo prompts on the hacker scenes in House of Cards.
Even the 3D filemanager in Jurassic Park was a real thing in the 90s. https://youtu.be/dxIPcbmo1_U -
I miss this. Ever since Spotify started generating radio stations at the end of playlists and albums, everything blends together! 😅
-
Always remember, the most important thing to remember with covfefe,
-
@ClemFrieckie I should add this was also in November, when people were on vacation and making arrangements with family. 😒
-
ALL of my meetings up until last month were like this!
It's one thing to go around the room and get a quick status update, figure out what roadblocks are in the way and seeing if others can suggest solutions. It kind of forces teamwork, and at least you might get something out of that.
It's another thing entirely to force people to go to meetings unrelated to their project, just out of rote. It's a complete disregard for the developer's time, and it shows poor leadership in my opinion. -
Wow, that's messed up.
-
@Torbuntu. Tell me about it. I'm starting to wonder if my time is better spent freelancing locally on the side.

It should say "All your file are belong to us"
