Turned in my two weeks... and im on lunch with the team and the boss.
Why did I do this, this is just awkward. 😥
Try bullet journaling.
Just set a phone alert to update it before bed and when you wake up (to refresh your memory and jot down things you forgot).
And prioritize tasks. You can mark some tasks for later, even for a different month.
Some people like digital organizers (and I use those too) but I like pen and paper. YMMV1
If the company advertises itself as a family environment, RUN. I know no family's perfect, or how functional yours is- but remember that with any family there's a high risk of drama and bullshit.2
I don't wanna be specific today, so I'll just post a song exerpt.
I love you, I hate you, I'm on the fence, it all depends
Whether I'm up or down, I'm on the mend, transcending all reality
I like you, despise you, admire you
What are we gonna do when everything all falls through?
I must confess, I've made a mess of what should be a small success
But I digress, at least I've tried my very best, I guess
This, that, the other, why even bother?
It won't be with me on my deathbed, but I'll still be in your head
Put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint you
Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you
Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami, honey
I think you're a joke, but I don't find you very funny
For some inexplicable reason, I get super productive and creative just as soon as the clock gets near midnight. FML. I can never get enough sleep.
So I just tried to restart my dns caching service while conversing with someone. I typed 'sudo shutdown -r now'. 🙊
So, I just attempted to use KDE's partitionmanager application on Gentoo... just noticed that every time I run it, it screws up the formatting in /etc/fstab.
That's a deal-breaker! Back to gparted...
Sometimes I have to work with physical hardware. There are over 300 machines in our lab, split among two subnets. But for some reason, I can never access my machines by hostnames.
Every other week, there's an IP conflict on this network, requiring me to log into the active directory server and delete old DNS entries. This usually happens because someone decided to deploy 64 VMs on a huge server, all at once, didn't boot them with a delay, let alone with with a warning to IT.
Then when my superior asks how my progress has been and I respond with "I can't even get the machines to ping each other by hostname, there's something wrong with the DNS:, I get the following response: "HOW COME NOBODY ELSE IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS. YOU'RE FULL OF SHIT", from someone who spends 90% of the year abroad, working remotely.5
HR meeting about flex time. They rounded up the entire engineering department for an all hands meeting.
Started off "we're not here to single anyone out, and no one's getting fired", and then proceeded to shower an employee, lets call them G with praise because they worked late the one day they brought in an investor.
The rest of the meeting was a guilt trip for the entire group. Great use of company time. /s1
