Why would you even *start* working for a company where you didn't even feel engaged enough to bring the laptop home? I don't really understand people that "just want a 9-5". I would never hire anyone with that sort of lack of engagement, even though any company I work with of course expects a reasonable work/life balance.

Frequently I think this is a tactic to make you click the wrong place and for them to get a nice well-paying click-through instead...

How is that not obvious?

There are two kinds of fixes - intentionally permanent ones and unintentionally permanent ones.

But now I can't ++ it because it has 666 upvotes!

Without speaking for how things work in India, I'd say college gives you a broader perspective and university trains you in general problem-solving and gives you many useful tools. If you think the takeaways from either are the coding skills or language knowledge you gain then you have roo narrow a focus. These days I use 2% of the facts I learned in university and 100% of the problem solving patterns and scientific approach.

I did on my last MBP and it was sensationally revitalized. Now new MBP with 1TB SSD and loving it.
-
You did.

I agree a lot of people seem to work like this, but for the life of me I can't understand why. My first thought when faced with some day-to-day trivial task is "someone must have already solved this - I'm sure I'm not the first".
-
What? You've lost your floppy drive?
-
<irony>No, iThings are always better by definition.</irony>
-
Not.

Would be more my reaction to a company that didn't.

@Jumpshot44 Ended up with a lot of manual re-entry + figuring out account balances by reprocessing call records, but in the end the base of it was the previous backup.

Docker ftw!

Well, it worked for Microsoft too - in Windows Media Center they called it "Do you want to enable MCE optimization?" meaning the system rebooted every night at 4am.

Move aside boy, and hand me that keyboard...

My tan. Unfortunately, I'm in Sweden.

Vim because it works and is always there. Emacs because it can do anything!
