In python , lists are passed by reference. So , if you add/update/delete elements inside the function using that pointer, it will reflect outside.

On the other hand, if you 'assign' a value inside the function, it won't update the pointer but instead it will create a new local variable.

I kind of the like the simplicity, I don't have to type the password twice. Also, I don't think most of the people type their password wrong first time, that's ridiculous.

But, like you said, if you hit it wrong, you can reset it with email. That's something you should be willing to pay when you are too lazy to type the password carefully.
