Thames627yI think I might just to try it out. I just wanted to see what everybody had to say about it. @dontPanic

@Thames it truly can be an amazing experience! just remember that on linux you are responsible for anything you do with it. What i mean is, don't type in random commands while root, or it'll be hard to unfuck it. Also read a lot of manuals (type in 'man <program>" in the terminal)
best of luck -
I don't use windows anymore since 2013.. but I recently switched from OS X to Linux and i don't regret anything..

I am probably one of the rarest species to start off with Linux (when i started college three years ago, of course I used windows as a kid), I switched to Windows for Gaming and mostly coz of my development stack (consider this before choosing), never regretted a single day about switching to Windows !

@lelp89 Yes Linux is great! There isn't much of a learning curve if you go for a system like Mint or Ubuntu :)
-
Unless you are developing for C++/C# or using your GPUs(like for CUDA or something), I think you should try out some Linux distro.
-
I wouldn't recommend trying it in a VM first. You're only going to really use it if it's your main system - applies the other way too.
I've been using windows for more than ten years and Linux for 4 years now - and I'm a lot more productive in Linux that, I understand the system way better and it feels more like 'my'system.
It's very flexibel and open in every regard (security aside :P).
