“One of the biggest mistakes engineers make is spending time on optimising something (a component) that shouldn’t exist in the first place” - Elon
I’ve been guilty of this a few times 😅2
Does anyone else sometimes feel like quitting, selling everything, move to a small town in e.g. Texas, become a brick layer or carpenter and just start from scratch and build a honest working class day-to-day life? Or is it just me?...
In tech I always focus on what’s gonna happen next year, where will I be in 5 years etc.
I feel like by pursuing a good life I’m missing out on life 😅
Would be nice to do some honest, physical work and leave tomorrow behind for a while..11
I really start to lose motivation to work when working from home..
I find myself watching YouTube videos for 4-5h a day instead of working..
Still get my sprint work done but man, it’s so boring after a year at home..8
Is it gay to like Ed Sheerans music?
He’s one of the few new people with actual talent in my opinion.
Many people say men listening to Lana del Rey are gay so I don’t give a shit anyway.
But I’m still wondering.
How many of the guys without a life (like me) here listen to and actually enjoy listening to Ed Sheraan?
Gaaaaaaaaalway Girl, nananannananannaa gaaaaaalway Girl, nananannananananananananna
That shits is stuck in my head now..22
It’s sooo weird.
I’m generally not feeling happy or good or “okay”, I’m almost always rather shitty but just keep going through my day without complaining too much because that’s what most of us do..
Today, for the first time in at least one (very lonely, cold and boring) year, I went outside for a smoke and felt good. No idea why.
Everything was orangy/yellowish outside because of the clouds after the first sunny day in weeks.
Its raining slightly but not so much that you actually get wet.
I just had this feeling of “yea, that’s good enough” which I haven’t had in probably 4-5 years or so.
Maybe it’s because I got a little bit of sun for once and saw other people walking 2m around me, I don’t know..
But it felt good.
Does that feeling sound familiar to anyone or am I just finally going crazy?
I also apologise for my last 50 rants not being about dev or rant but I’m lucky to not have much to rant about in my current job 😅9
I come from a small shitty valley where all that people want to achieve is getting approved for loans to buy more cows and shit.. My only friend comes from there as well but he’s different, more like me.. build a life, get out and pursuit something better and bigger..
We grew up smoking everything we could and drinking everything we got because what else are we gonna do, put shit on fire? Been there, done that.. it sucks growing up on the poop hole of the world.
We both left that shithole and started careers but he’s throwing it all out the window.. he’s getting caught with weed, DUI and shit. just a few years ago he got off of more serious drugs.. He built a career and shit for about 10 years but right now he’s just throwing it all away because drugs are in his comfort zone. But he has to go give Pias samples for a while now and if he doesn’t stop he is not getting his license back and the unemployment insurance won’t even pay him because (although he lost the job because of Covid) they said it’s because he smokes weed.
Without the license goes his career as he’s a service electrician.
So fucking hurtful to see, man.
And so hard to accept that he won’t listen and than I’m not his dad who can tell him what to do..
90% of the kids I grew up with who managed to leave that shit hole ended up as homeless junkies.. I guess I’m happy to have the mindset to not end up like them.. and that’s really all it is, the mindset is the only difference (which is complex in itself of course like parenting and stuff)7
Two glasses after dry January and I feel like a sloth..
Gives me project ideas though..
And I have weed cravings. haven’t smoked in like 12 years. what the fuck...3
I love what’s going going on with GameStop...
Once again we are witnessing the power of the internet bringing average people together and give them power to change the “untouchable” system..7
Has anyone played around with kaggle.com to get into data science?
I’m good with data, good with analytics and good with programming but I need to combine those skills and learn whatever I’m missing.
Kaggle came up and it seems to have some nice data sets and challenges to do.
I need to stop finishing my sprints work within the first 3-4 days of the sprint.
I get so excited to get work that I loose my sense of time and space so I finish it all in one go...
Now I’m gonna be bored again for 2-3 weeks 😫8
Im trying dry January.. so far or was easy but now I’m watching terminator and I really want a whiskey..13
This day just sucks.
Got a speeding ticket, went to pay it first thing in the morning. To renew insurance I had to call the bank to update my phone nr for 2FA. In this endless loop of „for this, press 1, for that, press2“ I pressed the wrong number and it invalidated my e-Banking password.
After a while got my number updated, after that called the insurance, after waiting for like 20min got that sorted and wanted to check my bank balance but I couldn’t log in. Now I can’t reset it either because it’s locked.
Need to call then again but needed a break and wanted to cook something but now my FUCKING SINK is clogged.
Have to uninstall half of the kitchen to get to t he pipes..
And it’s only noon.5
Happy new year boys and girls.
Let’s hope the new one is not gonna be as fucked up
as the last one.2
You know you’re fucking lonely when you’re half way through your holidays (which you HAD to take) and you’re happy to get a text that you’re needed tomorrow.
At least some calls and human interaction.
Just have to make sure to get the wine and whiskey out of my system by then 😅10
Love this app.. SkyView..
You point it at stars/palette and it shows you what it is.
Edit: sorry not a rant..1
I miss the simplicity and creativity of the good old days..
I have a solution in mind and it’s really not that complex but my brain just doesn’t want to connect all the pieces..
When I think about component a and b, then c and a don’t work together. So I come up with a solution for a and a but then b is loose again..
I think I’m getting old🤕8
Not at all dev related but I don’t have a social life so I share with you guys:)
I’ve been fat for all my life. You might say it’s my own fault blah blah but I quit sugar over 10 years ago, I don’t snack and eat 1-2 meals a day, not much more than others do.
The first time I was in good shape was when I was 16. I was growing, I started boxing and I was happy-ish with my body for the first time. I got down from 110kgs to ~87kgs, which is a good weight for me, I have heavy bones and wide shoulders I guess.
I insured my shoulder and couldn’t do boxing anymore but my weight was still pretty much stable. After working in the office for a few months I started gaining weight again, I think mainly due to the stress and lack of sleep.
In 2017 for the first time I hit a new high with 120kgs. I quit my terrible, stressful 24/7 job and relocated and got down to ~115 which I maintained for quite a while (still going to the gym and stuff).
And then the lockdown started..
I went up to >120 in no time.
(Sounds really bad but as mentioned, I’m heavy anyway so I’m not THAT obese, just fat.
Seeing my weight was really scary to me so I started a keto diet again, which I did before but with limited success.
Warning: Controversial topic coming up..
I took it a bit further and tried 0-carb (carnivore diet) instead of low carb and I lost 6kg within a month. Then the next plateau at 114, then at 112 etc.
Went more strict and removed seasoning and stuff and started eating more nutritious meat, liver, heart, tongue etc and my weight started dripping again.
Yesterday for the first time in ~a decade I got down to 105kg.
My end goal is 90, so I made it half way through.
Just really happy to have achieved this. The 1 good thing about lockdown I guess, I had so much time to be on my own.
Before you say eating no greens is bad, keep in mind that most not old people die because of obesity, not because of a lack of fiber.
It’s a big achievement for me and I hope that I can get to 90kg in another 3 months..
There’s so much we can learn from Gordon Ramsay..
I wish I could swear & insult like he can..
Woman: “who do you think you are? You insulted my friend!”
Gordon: “well if I did then I probably meant it, now get your fat ass back to your table”
“Congratulations, you just got your head out of your own ass. Now piss off”
*Customer wants more spinach*
Gordon: “ ok I’ll make you more spinach *dramatic pause* and push it up your ass”
Or my all time favorite:
“You fucking donkey”14
5k lines of code and some long days in and it turns out UI and I (backend) had an oopsie in our communication so it was all for nothing. Back to 0😖4
Due to working from home I decided a few months back to invest the money I save instead of keeping it all in my bank account.
About 10-20% of it goes to a long term investing account and the rest into the one I manage actively.
The nice thing about homeoffice is that I can have a lunch break an hour later when the market opens and review my shit, then again checking up on it in the late evening before the market closed here.
Have been playing around with trading for years but never did it with patience and discipline.
After 3 months I managed to reach over 16% profit.
My account is small so it’s not a lot of money but I’m focusing on the % rather than the $ at the moment. It’s a start..
Anyway, thought I’ll share my progress with you guys as some of you probably invest as well..
Im exclusively swing trading, so holding my positions between 1-14 days with no leverage.
After a very busy week I’m enjoying my Friday evening with a nice glass of Tullamore, a few slices of my medium cooked housekeepers roast and some vintage-ish music videos on the projector.
Because of homeoffice I forgot how good it feels to be exhausted.
Enjoy your weekends everyone🥃
And don’t even think about commenting some shit about Lana, she’s a-fucking-mazing😬15
Big big feature came in and a very very tough deadline on it.
It’s pretty heavy on the backend and I’m currently the only backend engineer. Will be 100% busy the next few weeks.
And I love it 😁
I missed the stress.
Stress gives me the drive I need.2
What’s the point?
Why do we care about a point at all?
Why do we even try to make sense out of it?
I’m religious but if you think about believe long enough that’s a point to question as well.
I guess the 2nd lockdown is getting to me.
I’m extremely introverted but this I too isolated even for me.
In the the 1st lockdown I made it for 3 weeks, now I’m breaking after 1.5weeks....7
