dang. Messed up at work. Small action, big impact

Oddly enough. I thought I've outgrown this but still am being pretty stressed about it.

Weirdly, I think getting fired might put me more at ease than anything else.

Any theories?

If a small action can cause a big consequence.

Then it could be a big picture thing of the processes in place.

Maybe think about how this can be prevented in the future. Either automated test or new process for test environment.

Everyone makes mistakes, don't sweat too much

@devrocket Yeah. I understand all that and thought I've outgrown it. But apparently not.

I think I'm more feeling bad for all the other people that will have to answer for this.

If they fire you for a mistake instead of making the company more robust to mistake making and their prevention that's probably not a good place to work at

Since humans can only learn from mistakes, and all else is conjecture and soon stops reflecting reality

@jestdotty I meant to say I'd likely feel better if I did get fired.

@iceb Damn, sounds you're putting yourself down when you don't have to. Even if you feel like shit right now and currently feel it's reasonable you "take the blame" to save others - ask yourself: does that benefit the org? if you were the boss would you fire an employee for this? would that help in any way?

Arguably you're less likely to do it again than a new hire. Even if you made a similar mistake a while ago; nothing good would come out of having you fired over that.

In my team if someone makes a mistake that anyone could make - no individual will take that blame.

@iceb "understanding" why people write safety nets like tests doesn't help until you actually build the net.

Idk the scenario enough to say anything further. Could a test have prevented this issue? What happened?

@MammaNeedHummus at the risk of possibly identifying myself. I accidentally turned on a feature that wasn't ready to be turned on lol (feature flags, so no code or deployment was involved)

and it broke an existing feature

it's basically a fragile mental thing I have to get over.

I understand everything that was said here logically. Mentally/psychologically still feel guilty and anxious about it.

    Here’s one: Don’t Get Fired.

You would think it would make you feel better but it won’t. You would feel “free” for a few days but then you would start questioning a lot of things.

Getting fired takes a toll on your mind. Try searching for a different job if current one is not fulfilling.

Plus, obviously, it doesn’t mean that you should live under pressure at all times. It just means that you should try to not give so much weight to your negative feelings.

I know: Easier said than done. But I have been through all this very recently.
