    I mean yes, but I fuck with game development and even though Linux is still pretty good for that I need to consider the main platform in which people play games mmmmmmmmmkay?

    Yes, the market share reflects that.

    Greater for what? Greater for regular users? Greater for business users? What about users that use Windows only engineering software? What about users that develop video games for Windows?

    For technical users, sure, Linux is great.

    Can we have some other options already

    This is too few

    Mac > Linux

    @retoor okay, thems fightin' words!

    Linux > Windows
    Mac > Linux
    Windows > Mac

    It’s a circle.

    Do these discussions ever end with someone changing platforms? I suspect the trenches just get deeper each time. I would never think, "oh embedded windows sounds like a good idea". Linux is embedded and server king.

    @retoor whom are you kidding

    @Lensflare I don't think there's a well-defined ordering relation on operating systems.

    @donkulator I think our brains are trained on bullshit so we can't make a rational or objective judgement.

    I compare devs and other IT professions to the trades.

    If buddy shows up to work with Walmart brand power tools he's a clown. Same as showing up to our industry with windows.

    Linux or Mac is a must. I give preference to Linux due to native container support, and imo it's more of a power user platform.

    If you develop Windows apps for work then I just feel bad for you. If you do it for a hobby, you're one of the masochistic I've been hearing about.

    I dunno, Linux is up to 1.63%... It should be the primary platform and target! lol

    @thebiochemic you are honestly not wrong. The market for gaming on mobile devices is expecting to increase even more from my understanding. And Android definitely takes the cake on that one over Iphone. But I would still prefer to target the PC space only. I barely play anything on my phone.

    @Demolishun We need to pump those numbers up. Gaming and the development of such is about one of the only reasons why I keep using Windows. I don't necessarily hate Windows as many in here do. I would just rather use what I love (which is Linux in this case, heck even Apple's OS)

    One can only dream

    @Lensflare
    No it's not,
    Linux > Windows > Manure > Mac > JavaScript.

    @AleCx04 yeah same here, my project will end up on windows plus a handful of linux distros, i already prepared all the bundling and metadata bullshit. But i guess if you want to hyper optimize, you'd go for mobile market first, and the rest will kinda follow.

    And for the numbers, i'm trying haha 😂
    Got a steamdeck on Christmas last year, and i'm continuing playing on my main PC aswell, with Ubuntu.

    If we're looking at Steam alone, Linux is pretty much 2% there

    @joewilliams007 everyone on this platform since I exist!

    "linux's market share is too low to care" that's because it's all people actually know. most people buy a laptop and it has windows preinstalled on it and they don't actually know what that means. it's so common that it maintains its own market share through sheer exposure. that won't change unless game devs work with it despite the low market share. (that and proton, but nobody buying a laptop at walmart wants to set anything up at all, if it doesn't immediately work flawlessly they're trashing it and buying a new one.)
