I got a little jaded at work (the normal officer politics stuff), so I started doing less work, and reaching out to recruiters.
My boss noticed I was having a go, reached out and offered a raise and a new computer. I told him I'd have to research market value for the raise.
In the mean time I got an offer for 50% more than what I'm making now. I'm heading to him today with my research in writing. Either way I'm getting that raise!7
Hot take: It's impossible to be a good programmer while relying on the gui. It's a crutch holding you back.28
Multi cloud, multi account, VPCs with k8s clusters all tied together with rancher and vault. Deployed in Terraform.
What a monster that was to create!3
A jr dev was having an issue registering code with our data pipeline (prefect self hosted).
Turns out he's running vscode to launch a anaconda shell (didn't even know that was a thing) to launch jupyter notebook and running commands in the notebook (didn't know that was possible) all from Windows.
No it doesn't work. His environment configuration isn't right. I told him to just run Linux and get rid of all that nonsense.
Nothing is on git yet and were three weeks in! His code is full of hard coded absolute paths of files on his hard drive... He even had an example app to go buy, with a project layout to copy.
There's no helping some people9
I deleted the Facebook app on my phone (2.5 hours of background use a day?!)
Now I have nothing to close to immediately reopen and feel like an idiot. And don't you dare suggest dev rant, this place barely has enough content to open once a day.15
Does anyone find any value over doing paid courses online vs just watching youtube videos about the content?
I've learned just about everything in my career by reading/watching tutorials and following along. I'm confused as to why people pay for that kind of training when it's freely available. Is there real value there?10
What OS does everyone use, and what kind of dev do you use it for?
I'm using Linux Mint and I do back end and dev ops.32
Spent two days debugging a k8s config. Turns out Rancher doesn't create ingress controllers on EKS instances, and I have to do that manually.
Thank you random stranger in github issues! I've tipped you some BAT!
Started a new gig doing APIs and deployment pipelines. After a few weeks a new boss came on the scene and decided I'm now a web dev, and the API and pipelines are going to be scrapped, and replaced by something with less availability and scalability.
Anyone looking for a good back-end dev?
I'm not a web dev, but I hear a lot of talk about dependency injection from fellow devs on the web scene. Wtf is it? Please explain it to my smooth brain13
Jr: I'm having a problem with my environment, can you help me?
Me: Sure! Did you switch to the latest Ubuntu LTS
so that your environment matches the rest of the dev team like you were asked to do the last 3 times?
Jr: No, I like Windows better because linux is too complicated. Can you just figure out how my environment is suppose to work and than fix what I did wrong please?
Me: No. Let me know if you ever need help with the our standard dev environment. Good luck!24
Trying to get HIPPA compliance, and wet have to put full disk encryption and anti virus software on all our servers...
All of our servers are on aws ec2 / eks. The instances we do control aren't big enough for anti virus to be running...
God help me now5
Working with a data scientist on an update to a machine learning api that has dinner logic change with a new model.
He's wondering why his PRs are falling.
He's trying to merge into development from a branch created off of main.
He's renamed all the functions and classes and never updated the call points.
He's using new packages but never includes them in the requirements file, so the docket builds are failing.
His class method definitions don't contain self and are throwing syntax errors.
I've been working with him for 4 days to get him to understand branching, linting, unit testing, and not blindly copy and pasting snippets from jupyter notebook into production api code!8
