Mining is only going to be profitable for so long. Once we have 10 or so well established crypto currencies then fewer new ones will get created.

I still dont fully understand crypto currencies... I can understand that someone pays me money when I offer my effort to him, but how can I just "generate" value with my computer? I have heard that miners basically verify crypto transactions and thus do povide work for others but that only works if there is a crypto currency to begin with...

Bitcoin mining is already dead, 12.5 bitcoins rewarded per block, the number of transactions is so pathetic that each block is probably only 12.5 + 0.08 bitcoins. The only people making money are the people selling the miner rigs.
