@Aitkotw also when Im connected to a hotspot from my other phone connected to a vpn?
-
@Kimmax that might be it but then is the question why would they offer me a reason to get rid of them even more.
-
Kimmax109877y@Codex404 it really is. When they drove their streetview cars arround they scanned for wlan ssid's + their mac address. They stored that information together with gps data. Now you don't need GPS for an approximate location. The phone sends wich wlan networks where found nearby and which cell phone towers it's connected to. Google does a lookup on the wlan networks in range of these cell phone towers and I'm pretty sure that they do some triangulation on these towers. If you combine them you get a pretty accurate result on about where you are.
Adding to that, other android phones store scanned wlan networks + gps data and send them back to google, which helps keeping the database up to date.
Also note that you might have agreed to keep sharing and scanning even if location services are disabled. -
Kimmax109877yIt's all about the data and what you make out of it. The current traffic reports on maps are nothing different. Count phones on that road and check of fast they are moving, do some math to account for android market share and compare against the usual traffic flow / other sources of data and voila, you can create that fancy map.
The words you typed in on the old captchas? Google digitalised books and needed help training their AI to read (https://books.google.com), there is no better training data than millions of different people. Once the book AI was solid they threw house numbers in the mix, to help the maps AI recognize house numbers on the pictures their streetview cars took.
And now we got the new captchas. You guessed it? We train an AI to read all sorts of signs / recognize businesses and detect cars etc. -
