>>Server sind für mich "Neuland".<<

I want to switch to a new server with my website. I have a bunch of questions and hope you beautiful people will help me out.

1. I've decided to switch from shared hosting to an virtual server. Therefore I am going to rent the cheapest VS from hetzner.de. is this a good choice?

2. What do I have to care about and what stuff there is to be done in the beginning?

3. The reasons I want to switch are more root accessibility and I want to switch to https. What about that? Is let's encrypt enough?

4. How do I move the server from a to b?

5. What OS should I choose?

6. What about security?

7. Any further advice from experienced people is welcome!

Sry for those noob questions, but I've never been in touch with server work...

    1. This is completly up to you!
    2. Update the system. Install the packages you like :)
    3. LE is enough - but google supports it (@linuxxx)
    4. I dont get the question
    5. Which one have you used before? Debian is a good choice!
    6. Security is good ;)
    7. Do not run PHP as a module in apache - use fpm instead. Keep the pool on different users. Check permissions.

    3. Depends on the site, will explain more on riot
    4. Why would you want that? No clue on this one tbh
    5. Debian or CentOS I'd say
    6. Look into this a lot and ask away if you don't get something!
    7. I'll see you on riot ;)

    @Linux You can continue with this but I've already explained myself on the Google part multiple times so I'm done with that.

    @Linux thank you very much for your fast answers.

    4. In more detail:
    As my website is online already, I was wondering if registering the domain to a new IP is enough to "move the website" to the new server?

    @linuxxx 😅 I have to reinstall it. Wait a minute.

    @linuxxx
    You should really reconsider your position on that part.

    @Divisionbyzero
    You mean change the A record?
    You have to move the files and database first :)

    @Linux then just change the domain to new address?
  • 1
    @Divisionbyzero
    Yes

    @AlexDeLarge @Linux It's very simple, I have about 10 active domains with a lot of subdomains. I do not have the money to get certs for every domain/subdomain (I regularly remove/add subdomains). I don't have much of a choice since self signed certs are out of the question.

    @AlexDeLarge Also SSL's on every domain are a requirement for me :)

    @linuxxx are you there?
  • 1
    @Divisionbyzero Yeah just loads going on haha sorry

    @linuxxx don't worry you can write if you have the time. I'm not in a hurry.

    @linux is it possible to move the email client too?

    I want to keep the existing email@domain.de address, if possible.

    @Divisionbyzero
    Move the emailclient?
    If you mean the emailserver, it is possible but running your own email server is high maintenance

    @Linux what is a better way to go on this problem then?
  • 1
    @Divisionbyzero
    If you really want you have your own emailserver, you have to get another server because it is never good idea to host websites and email on the same server.

    iRedmail is a good suite to start with!

    @Linux thank you very much. Can I keep the existing email address then?

    @Divisionbyzero
    If that is your own domain - yes.
    Just change the mx record
