I'm no Linux expert, and a few years ago I spend a considerable time trying to setup a Linux Mint USB key, with all the programs I wanted. It kept screwing up after restarting between installing applications. It turned out that I wasn't reading the messages properly when installing Virtual Box that was removing vast amounts of critical stuff. The solution "apparently" was to compile Virtual Box from source as it was incompatible with the kernel. Or something like that. I ditched the idea all together, shame really because it looks nice.
