"Make us a one-page website for our new company!"

I build the site, to their exact specifications and show it to them

"There's only one page"
"You only asked for one page."
"No, we didn't"
I show them the email they sent me, asking for a one-page site
"Wow, you suck, we are finding another developer!"

Maybe they meant Single Page Application. So many companies just don't know what they want or what they need. The follow buzz words blindly as they them them down a fiery pit of bankruptcy.

Guess it depends if they know what a one page site is :)

What did they want, two pages?

Well, if you think that your job is blindly following your client request, then I'm not surprised that they left you.

In the end you're the specialist, and you should (sorry for that) know what they want.

If I went to a plumber, told him some stupid things how I think something should be done, and he did exactly what i'd told him, instead of a required fix, my reaction would be the same.
