Sometimes I just wonder about the level of customization you get at Linux. You can't even imagine a desktop that looks like this on Windows.

Combine Rainmeter with Stardock and Wallpaper engine and you can do whatever the fuck you want:

Videos, 3D scenes, particles, music player/visualizer, programmable sprites and stuff, modify your taskbar etc DAMN xD

I can imagine quite a lot.
I would rather have a working Windows than a good looking one though.

@chaostools you can create your own stuff with Rainmeter, it's quite easy to do so. So it is at least free for me 😉

I tried to do similar on my mac, created some real fancy widgets for the desktop. But I never look at it, so I found it a waste. I removed it all and hid the icons, not it’s just a clean picture instead

My background is a picture of my cats and the Win10 toolbar has the 8 shortcuts that I use the most.

@D--M Damn this is the first pro-linux rant I've seen in days.
And yeah you can do it in windows but I'd rather have the option integrated in the very core of the system (gnome working with css/js as for the interface, making it ridiculously easy to style the entire OS) than having to install shit for it and also the endless customization you have (hell you can rewrite the fucking kernel if you want) is something which one can't (for as far as I'm aware) find in windows nor macos.

Because I can afford it and find the desktop operating system used by the vast majority of the world's population extremely useful. Ohh and Windows 10 is fucking awesome and completely trouble-free.

@intromatt well I respect your decision for starters. But the thing is if I can afford and system is not giving you that much worth of satisfaction I would rather donate my money to charity or put it in some good open source project.
P.S.- windows 10 sucks but windows 7 was the best version till now for me.

Damn that's ugly... I prefer a much more minimalist look.

My desktop does show my top three tasks together with their CI build states though (A cinnamon widget, an Asana script in Go and some calls to the Github API).

I really don't like Conky, LUA is hell. I also don't get the stuff it's used for... If you need to watch resources you bought the wrong hardware.

Still, there are some pretty Conky setups, and it's much better than that heavy weight Stardock crap that looks like a fourteen year old designed it in Corel Draw during the Windows XP era.

Linux mint with funky conky graphs on desktop, a green on black terminal and firefox with ddg opened.

Please tell me you were wearing a black hoodie while doing this.

I keep looking for stuff to put on my desktop. The give up because all my windows take up loads of space. So.. No point. Rainmeter is nice. I'm too lazy. 😀

I don't like this desktop. Empty desktop with only the wallpaper is good for me. I like looking at the wallpaper and think nothing.

@shahriyer most of the time desktop is hidden so I never got the point of making desktop look like this
