For everyone happy to see Facebook getting negative PR, just remember, unless people decide that they are willing to pay a monthly subscription for social media, nothing is going to change long term.

yes, this. Also, I think lots of people are happy to save that money at the cost of being targeted with ads.

Luckily more and more people are doing exactly that, see Mastodon: a decentralised Twitter (that doesn't look like shit like other attempts). Receives 3285 dollars per month on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/Mastodon.

@DuckyMcDuckFace What do you mean? Given the onslaught of free apps and people's apathy towards privacy it's a small miracle that they're pulling in enough money for a full-time dev.

You should be cheering them on instead of being disappointed. Change should come from somewhere, right?

No offense but you sound like another devRanter who was telling people how pointless it is to delete Facebook because there are all these other apps spying on you. Sure, I get that it's s small step but again, it has to start somewhere.

We are talking about a cultural change here (choosing privacy and ethical apps instead of free but shitty stuff that spies on you ass). That's a huge task. How many other social apps do you know that bring in any money without going down the same annoying path of ads/spying.

I'm sorry if I come over as angry but you can't be telling people to change their behaviour and be like "is that all" once they do. Besides, Mastodon is just starting. How long's FB been around?

I hope DevRant doesn't go the selling data/ads route. In fact, I've just subscribed today to give em a bit of support 8)
