Got a new motherboard today, a Asus crosshair vi hero, AM4 for amd ryzen.

Bought is as broken / defective, it supposedly works except 2 ram slots should not get detected.

On a closer look, the story of water-damage didn't seem right.

Disassembled everything and took another look.

😲😨 "Is that solder tin? What the actual fuck?"

*Scratche it with tweezers

*"Supposed solder tin" becomes liquid and moves

😱 "The fuck that's liquid metal"
😡 Who the fuck sprinkles liquid metal all over a board?
😳Ryzen is solderd why the fuck should someone use liquid metal?

What the heck

    @killermenpl that's what i'm assuming too.
    But why should he lie about it?

    If you spill liquid metal while applying it, you normally notice that.
    At least in theory.

    The thing is much peculiar then just that.

    According to the seller, the board was RMA ed twice.
    The "water-damage" shall have happened on the way from the supplier to him, after which he rma ed it a second time because of this "water damage"

    He claims to never have used liquid metal, nor have water-cooled it.

    And I also doubt that the shop (supplier) used liquid metal.

    @RageBone I smell lies.

    I smell shit-tier solder. I've seen solder that I can nip off with tweezers before, it behaves very much like liquid metal and it looks, for all intents and purposes, like water damage from a cursory glance.

    I've also seen this on high end graphics cards, and there's even a video of the same on Louis Rossman's channel. Its just shitty workmanship.

    @monr0e
    I can testify that this was liquid metal.
    Did not behave like solder at all and it
    did exactly behave like I expect liquid metal does, so it is liquid metal.
    😁
    Some areas looked a bit like they might have seen a tinie tiny bit of water, but not bad enough for me to care.

    And if it were solder, why should someone (except me) put solder in random places on a perfectly good board?

    And if it were, there would be other indicators that it was solder. I guess.

    But hey, another Louiss Rossmann (fan | folllower | watcher )

    Maybe he had an accident...

    Make sure you clean your hands in case its actually mercury. That shit is bad af

    @c3ypt1c Well, after I figured out what it was and therefore became aware of possible complications, I started to wear gloves.

    Maybe that was a bit late but what can I do.

    Âhm... Ist it just me or does it look like it got fried!? Kinda Smokey around that screw hole....

    @Rohr
    I think it's just you.

    Though that is where the liquid metal was, but that is no smoke.

    Where is Fatherboard?
  • 1
    @Devnergy somewhere out there on the way back home to me πŸ˜€

    Would be a x399 setup. TR ..

    @RageBone hmm ... It siriously does not look normal though...

    @Rohr yes, that silvery thing is liquid metal, that did not belong there.

    The black thing around the hole is a plastic washer to protect the pcb.
