mrsulfat2957yShe isn't a idiot because she doesn't understand it, she's a idiot because she as most likely have had use a pc for years without trying to learning how to operate it
-
Number027017y@py2js she’s a receptionist - who actually orders in USB sticks for staff in her building so I haven’t got a clue why she got so confused!
She’s worked here for 8 years already so it’s not like she hasn’t had PC issues before! -
Number027017y@mrsulfat that’s exactly why it annoys me.
she’s worked with us for 8 years.
Has rung us before panicking because ‘outlook is just gone and I can’t send emails!!!’
She’d just deleted her desktop shortcut.
I opened the start menu and it was pinned there right in front of her - one click away!!!
Would you not look for it yourself before calling someone??
*takes deep breaths* -
Number027017y@Frederick i used to wonder why my team were excited when i started working here as an admin and wanted to know how things worked and how to fix them myself lol
Having moved up into IT, I now understand how rare it is! -
Brolls31557yWe had a consultant with a PHD that taught comp sci and we had to show him how to plug his keyboard in.
-
Brolls31557y@Number0 a lot of people really rely on the desktop. I’ve had “I lost the Googles” because they had deleted the chrome shortcut before.
-
Number027017y@Brolls lol I’ve had that too!
Have asked them to open internet explorer and was met with silence...
ask them to open google and they open internet explorer 😂 -
"I mean... *laughs* I didn’t go to college for this kind of stuff."
I doubt she went to college either way -
Conrad7537yExactly. I don't understand how people can't tell the difference beteween USB and HDMI
Then again I'm helping elderly people copy files (in WinXP ffs) and then they're like "Oh god could you please come back? I tried to move a folder and now its gone!" (She tried to change the order of folders and accidentally moved one into another)
I mean I get paid for that and I can understand if you only use that computer to save your vacation pictures. But if you use computers at work you have to know your stuff! -
webdev22037yOnce in university we went to another building as our was on reconstruction on that week. We went to the computer science class with PCs, we sat down and I KID YOU NOT, there were mouses with MOUSE written on it with white marker. We were like, N.O W.A.Y. but then we looked at the monitors and there was an arrow drawn next to the power button with text: TURNING IT ON AND OFF (in slovak) we asked the lecturer, wtf is going on here, he laughed "this is the building of humanitarian sciences, there is no IT or CS program here."
On the other hand, I was installing pcs/laptops to everybody I know, I was building/repairing PCs, stuff like that, I code, do frontend stuff, sometimes stuff on the server, but I never ever did or see a macro in excel lol
Oh and actually I was a CS teacher for 2 years in a high school. Kids are stupid too lol -
I'm also used to being a helpdesk for pretty much anything concerning computers and smartphones for anybody in my family and that's fine. I love those people and they help me with other things.
But even my eldest relatives who do anything with a computer know what a USB port looks like. So I got no idea how long this recptionist wants to keep working or much wants to have technology in her private life, but in any case I'd recommend to get some basic knowledge on how operate it.
It's about doing coding - that's our job - but some basic skills. -
Szeyu347yOk, this is way worse than my irritation of students who do a lot of writing in word and don't know what a pagebreak is.
"The page behaving really weird after I got it back from you." Yeah, you don't have to add tons of spaces now anymore, you're welcome!

Someones keyboard just stopped working in my job.
They called the helpdesk and i told them to unplug the keyboard from the back of the PC and try a different usb port before i send them down a new keyboard.
Their reply?
‘How am i meant to do that? I mean... *laughs* I didn’t go to college for this kind of stuff. I know you did but you need to explain it in English for me instead of using technical terms.’
....
So i had to describe what a USB looks like, and tell her how to follow the (only) skinny black cable she has on her desk, down the back of the desk and into the PC. She got overwhelmed by this cable being the same colour as the thicker VGA cable, so ended up unplugging everything!
Its fine though, as when she plugged them all back in, everything was back working.
She finished the call by saying:
“Like, i know how to use a computer but I just don’t understand all this technical mumbo jumbo, like USB’s and stuff? How should i know about that?”
...
I sincerely think interviews need to have just 5 minutes dedicated to the person showing that they know what a bloody USB is!!, can turn on/off a PC, open outlook, and follow basic instructions.
Ugh I work with idiots 😢
