Manager, 2 days to the end of said colleague's probation period:
- I am very sorry to tell you this, but our attitudes are not in line and we cannot continue working together. Since this is your 5th warning, we have to let you go.
The colleague:
- What?? How come?? I did NOT see this coming... You can't do this! I work here! This is where I work and you can't fire me!
*got his things from his desk and left. Never came back*
Everyone at the office:

Friends Pandemic December proposal: "We should all get on Zoom every weekend, play Christmas trivia games and do shots"
Family ideal Pandemic December: "Lets send each other Secret Santa presents throughout the whole month, and get on Zoom and unpack them"
Me: Chilled out on a reclining seat next to a freshly slaughtered green fir tree, burning hearth fire, warm wool sweater, faux fur slippers, big mug of liquored up hot chocolate, keyboard on my lap, writing a Rust library on big screen TV.
Sorry friends & family, y'all are doing holidays wrong.
Happy holidays.

Finally solved the mystery, why / and * are together on my keyboard so that there is no problem for me to use single line comment and multi-line comment.6

I just had to print out some bills for a colleague.
Nothing too bad you say?
Well.. She doesn't seem to care about security or privacy at all.
I opened the website of her email provider at my computer and moved away from the keyboard, so she could log in.
But instead she told me her email and password... In an office with some other colleagues... Multiple times and wrote it onto a piece of paper that the later left on my table.
After that I should look through her inbox to find the bills.
(Yup, I know a lot more about her now)
After finding and printing out her bills, she just thanked me and walked out of the office, because hey, why should I log out of her account?
It's nice that she trusts me... But that was a bit too much...4 -
My cat is powerless.
I am perfectly capable to operate my computer with my keyboard only. I am perfectly capable to operate most of it with my mouse only.
But my cat can only block one or the other.
Got two cats, though. Hope they won't team up against me.15 -
Dev starter pack:
1) A big ass headphone to listen to music
2) A nice mechanical keyboard to write “hello world”
3) Some cool stickers to fill laptop back
4) A box of tissue to wipe of the tears(after seeing your progress)34 -
I'm convinced that playing the piano has allowed me to type faster and commit keyboard shortcuts to muscle memory faster too. While coding isn't about typing quickly, there's a whole bunch of times when I've had an idea, and had to get that down into code as quickly as possible before I forget it - and that's when I really find fast keyboard work comes into its own.5

My daughter showed me a "computer" she made in Minecraft using 2 trapdoors. One for keyboard and one for screen. She folded the screen one upward to show its like a laptop. It was the oak trapdoor that has the four square holes:

Me: So your computer runs Windows?
She: No!8 -
I thought of posting this as a comment to @12bit float' post, but then decided it better goes out as a post by itself.

My second employer, where I am on my last week of notice currently, is building a no code/low code tool.
Since this was my first job switch, I was in a dreamy phase and was super excited about this whole space. I indeed got to learn like crazy.
Upon joining, I realised that an ideal user persona for this product was a developer. Wow! No code tool for developer. sO cOoL...
We started building it and as obvious as it could get, the initial goal was adoption because we were still at top of the funnel.
We launched an alpha release shortly followed by a beta.
Nobody used it. Tech XLT/LT kept pushing product and design team to run a feature factory so that their teams can use this tool.
The culture set by those two leaders was toxic as fuck.
Now, I decided to do some research and some more product discovery to understand why folks were not using it. Mind you, we were not allowed to do any research and were forced to build based on opinions of those two monkeys.
Turns out that the devs were really happy with their existing tools and our tool was another tool being forcefully added into their toolbox by the said XLT/LT.
Not only that, even if they decide to use our tool, out of pressure, they still cannot because the product was missing key capabilities like audit control and promotion from one environment to another.
Building those would essentially mean reinventing Github aka version control and Spinnaker aka CI/CD pipeline.
My new boss (I got 3 managers in 4 months because of high attrition across levels due to the toxic culture), thinks that tech XLT/LT are doing great and we all suck as a product and design team.
He started driving things his own way without even understanding or settling down for first 90 days.
Lol, I put in my resignation got out of that mess.
So agreeing to what our boy said here, no code tools are a complete waste, especially for a developer, and even as a non tech person, I prefer keyboard over mouse.2 -
Do you use the well known "pattern" for positioning fingers on the keyboard for faster typing, or you just came up with your own "pattern" as time passed?13

If you have a new Alienware, I highly recommend not to try installing Ubuntu on it. I can't even describe how many levels of hell I went through to get stuff working, and how every Ubuntu base update gives me a panic attack.
From Ubuntu not installing with RAID settings, then not being able to boot in GUI mode because Nvidia drivers, to built-in keyboard, speaker and mic not working.
Praise the Ubuntu lord, now everything is working, but I still can't adjust the rgb keyboard colors :(25 -
HP makes shit devices. How the fuck you gonna regress with product design from 7 years ago?
Like whos the fucktard that thinks “how about in order to swap a keyboard, we make the user take EVERYTHING out and then put it into a new upper housing?”
Or my favorite is “instead of screwing a screen panel in, lets use some painfully difficult to access stretch tape?”
Fuck HP’s product design team. If by some off chance any of yall know anyone who’s part of that team, tell them i said they can eat a fat dick and get aids.8 -
Oh, as a noob dev my team was using a dropdown library for our filters in the website. The code was messed up cause they kept changing the design halfway through dev and after releases and then finally after some releases, the client wanted multilevel options as a new requirement.
So I scrapped the whole thing and made my own multilevel dropdown component (there were no decent libraries then) and we used that from then on. It has many issues now that I look back (who cares about keyboard interaction right?). But that is a refactor for another day. -
Fucking Android 12 everybody hate it, it's ugly, and what has changed from 11 besides everything you already know. 90% of time pressing volume down + power to take a screen shot will result with volume bar popup first then screenshot, so your screenshot is dirty with volume bar.
They must have adjusted time threshold between how fast/precise press of both buttons is, and now you kind of must be faster and alwas this "I need to press 2 buttons but power must be pressed first"
So fuck you google engineers for ruining Android in every sense. I want revert path, I'm going back to 11!!
It's a first major upgrade that is worse than previous, and those ugly tiles and notifications, cool they are big for what exactly? I still can't operate the phone with hand gloves on the motorcycle with tiny keyboard buttons.
It's like everything is tiny and then grandpa style huge top drawer icons for who knows what with so fucking annoying scrolling text, for fuck sake 11 had is just perfect!6 -
Well here it goes,
I started out in customer support (A lot of stuff to tell here).
1.
One of my colleagues would come to work drunk, like every day he would smell of boze (the hard stuff 80%+). When a customer got on his nerves he endet the call and threw his Keyboard across the room. He worked in the company 3+ Years after I left.
2. Another colleague would connect to his Personal Computer at his home and play WoW while at work ( Allthough the man was a genius with a lot of free time, until a new task was assigned to him)
3. My Boss at the time did some really shitty things. I worked 17 hour days (while I was 18) for a week, and at the end of the week he shredded the accrued overtime with some Bullshit Explanation. (I did not stay long after this shitshow happened).
4. A dispatcher who sent our technicians out scheduled their tasks so that they were on the road for weeks and did not see their families. This led to a very strong turnover among technicians.
And yes, this company still operates today.1 -
I will keep this short. I fucking hate Windows 11. There is nothing I like about it after over four weeks of having its fuckery drip down everything I do on my laptop like radioactive maple syrup. None of my apps from Windows 10 work. I google troubleshooting and I'm not going to go through 10 hacks to solve a problem created by Microsoft. The screen moves all over the place for no reason. I hate it. Not as much as I hated Mac, but I'm going to revert back to Windows 10 if I can. I don't wish to separate my laptop screen from my laptop keyboard again. The only person I know who can fix it tried to steal a hundred and twenty bucks from me. Thank you for reading this rant I'm living a charmed life otherwise, but snipping tool just fucked up and I'm fucking fed up. Peace out.17

I love my Model M keyboard.
What kind of switches has your main keyboard which you use for coding? (Cherry MX <color>/ Rubberdome/Model M, ...)25 -
As a keyboard enthusiast I can’t help but cringe when my coworker slaps and slams down on his 10 year old gross disgusting Logitech membrane keyboard.7

Just programming my own version of wordle and adding crane to they keyboard since 2blue1brown destroyed the game.4

It's seriously fucked up how you just suddenly realize that you're getting old just with what you eat and drink. I never drank alcohol, but instead I sometimes drink sodas. The fucked up thing is that now I've noticed if I down a 1.5L bottle of soda with sugar in it, my motivation is gone the next day. I'm down, I'm irritated, tired, I just can't bring myself to work at all. The moment I open my IDE and start writing a function I just feel incredibly frustrated and wanna smash the keyboard and close the computer. I just want to lie on the couch and watch Netflix or game all day. That's so fucked up. Now I gotta stop drinking sodas so I can stay mentaly healthy?! Aargh!5

So I changed the language and keyboard layout on my windows machine and now it is stuck for 5 minutes after signing in, waiting for... something, before you can use it as usual. It's like I'm back in 1995. But at least I can use my new keyboard properly I guess.

1997 Olivetti, 122 MHz Intel processor, 8MB RAM and 1GB HDD and Win 95. I mostly used software for children learning and games.
But my first “computer” was a shoebox with a keyboard drawn by hand on the cover and a screen on the bottom where I could change the “software” by swapping different drawings inside a transparent envelope.
All hardware and software made by me 😁 -
i'm sitting on the bus a few years ago, slamming the keyboard on my chromebook to try and get a wifi password. open crosh by accident. i went to check it out for a few days. i check back a few years later, every tab (basically everything for CrOS) autocloses if it has "crosh" in the url (regardless if it's crosh or not.) this pisses me off. i tell my brother about it, and he gets the terminal running for one day. how? i still dont know, sadly the program he installed (a harmless music notation app) breaks as well as the terminal. to this day i still wonder about what our IT department was thinking.

ugh... laptops are like , crazy addictions.
1 year ago, my hp laptop was the best for me, building android studio apps , keeping daily backups of all my home's appliances comfortably in it, running games and various softwares . i would carry it anywhere without fearing of any damage thanks to heavy cases and keyboard covers.
till i started my first job who gave me an intel mac to work with.I got a revised definition of a laptop. laptops are not what i knew .
- a laptop is something which does not take 20+ minutes to build android apps and can build in 60 seconds too
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty plastic body and can have a high quality metal body.
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty screen and can have a really clear (but fragile /s) HQ screen.
and
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily gives you ports. /s
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily needs large storage to store your stuff. /s
- INR 60K (or half of my 1st year college fees) isn't apparently not enough for a laptop
- a laptop can cost TONS to get fixed /s
.....
now , i did have learned all this and even after all the flaws , i feel like inclined towards buying a macbook. however coming from a typical lower class family from india , who DID break a laptop screen in 1 year, i am having some serious concerns buying a laptop , a 16 inch piece of aluminium for 300K (almost the cost of my four years of graduation)
but compared to that , i also have concerns buying any laptop above 100k because that's a lot of money , even though I could afford it. the whole point is, my non tech grocery seller parents worked too hard for very less money . i am in tech profile, i believe my work is not that much physically intensive, and i work half as hard as those guys , nd earn good yet spending SO MUCH feels like being an idiot
oh the headache :/11 -
A system to build note-taking systems. tatatap dot com.
It’s the most successful for a few reasons: it got launched, people find it useful, but most importantly it’s been fun and continues to be fun to work on.
I think the fun-to-make factor is massively underestimated as a success indicator. Working on the right product (whatever that means) that is unenjoyable is like using an amazing computer with a broken keyboard. It’s never going to work.
Sure, with any project there’s annoying stuff, but it’s the trend overall. Is the core functionality fun to work on?
In the case of Tap the core component is a notation parser, open sourced called sowhat, github dot com/tatatap-com/sowhat
That was super fun to make and learn about lexing and parsing. It’s pretty far along but there’s still a lot I’m planning to add. -
For the IT guy, the desktop is the monitor, the coffee table is the system unit, and the keyboard is the dining room table.👩🍳
-
I am a stupid monkey that spilled coffee all over his keyboard, and now it seems to be EOL.
Looking for some "inspiration" - what keyboards (and mice, might also just buy a whole new set) are you guys using?9
