Do you really like Google's material design? I find it really ugly...

I love it! I'm even trying to incorporate in my personal project app I'm working on now. I think it makes the UI clean and minimal. But then again, everyone has their preferences. :)

Same goes for me. Love the design. But I for example hate ios design. It just looks kinda weird to me.

I like aspects of it, I model most of my web design after it

Imo it is the design that will look good at any time we are in. 3d effects and elements look outdated after some time whereas simple "2d objects" look the same after decades.
I think that this is one of the valuable arguments to use something along the lines of material design.
