Search - "google"
Here's my piece of advice for new devs out there:
1 - Pick one language to learn first and stick with it, untill you grasp some solid fundamentals. (Variables, functions, classes, namespaces, scope, at least)
2 - Pick an IDE, and stick with it for now. Don't worry about tools yet. Comment everything you're coding. The important thing is to comment why you wrote it, and not what it does. Research git and start using version control, even when coding by yourself alone.
3 - Practice, pratice and pratice. If you got stuck, try reading the language docs first and see if you can figure it out yourself. If all else fails, then go to google and stackoverflow. Avoid copying the solution, type it all and try to understand it.
4 - After you feel you need to go to the next level, research best practices first, and start to apply them to your code. Try to make it modular as it grows. Then learn about tools, preprocessors and frameworks.
5 - Always keep studying. Never give up. We all feel that we have no idea of what we are doing sometimes. That's normal. You will understand eventually. ALWAYS KEEP STUDYING.9
My girlfriend keeps getting review requests from restaurants we visited.
Then there's a list of all the visited ones on her phone.
Location services is off.
Absolutely no respect for privacy.
Privacy is a myth.
Manager: Hey fullstackchris, the maps widget on our app stopped working recently...
Dev: (Skeptical, little did he know) Sigh... probably didn't raise quota or something stupid... Logs on to google cloud console to check it out...
Google Dashboard: Your bill.... $5,197 (!!!!!!) Payment method declined (you think?!)
Dev: 😱 WTF!?!?!! (Calls managers) Uh, we have HUGE problem, charges for $5000+ in our google account, did you guys remove the quota limits or not see any limit reached warnings!?
Managers: Uh, we didn't even know that an API could cost money, besides, we never check that email account!
Dev: 🤦♂️ yeah obviously you get charged, especially when there have literally been millions of requests. Anyway, the bigger question is where or how our key got leaked. Somewhat started hammering one of the google APIs with one of our keys (Proceeds to hunt for usages of said API key in the codebase)
Dev: (sweating 😰) did I expose an API key somewhere? Man, I hope it's not my fault...
Terminal: grep results in, CMS codebase!
Dev: ah, what do we have here, app.config, seems fine.... wait, why did they expose it to a PUBLIC endpoint?!
Long story short:
The previous consulting goons put our Angular CMS JSON config on a publicly accessible endpoint.
WITH A GOOGLE MAPS API KEY.
JUST CHILLING IN PLAINTEXT.
Though I'm relieved it wasn't my fault, my faith in humanity is still somewhat diminished. 🤷♂️
Oh, and it's only Monday. 😎

I’m a 25 year old female navigating into coding with no friends who are coders. I feel very alone in this journey and am reaching out on this website to make friends and get advice to become. A developer. I am currently doing an internship and don’t have a job and my mentor is very arrogant and mean and just tells me to google everything and won’t answer questions. It seems like the prospect of ever getting a job or being good enough is hopeless. My mentor is very intimidating and discouraging. I need some support.63
The most disappointing (not so sure about upsetting) rejection was from none other than Google.
I was ecstatic when Google respond to my application by inviting me to an interview. If I recall rightly I had two pre-interview screenings, two technical interviews, and about four interviews with people. The people were great and the HR person I was dealing with was open that the feedback was all good.
And then the rejection came! I called the HR guy and asked what happened. He said there’s a central group somewhere who approve all hiring and they decided I hadn’t worked for a “big enough” company in the past.
Yet - my potential colleagues and manager thought I could do the job, I passed the Google-scale technical tests … and then some faceless person somewhere says “meh” and that’s that.
It’s not like they didn’t have my resume that whole time, or the opportunity to ask any questions they wanted !
So that sucked.10
Google Drive says I've modified a file on... "January 15, 2021".
Wow. Google is the new oracle.22
So yesterday one of the "senior" python developers woke me up at 1 am (we work in different time zones, and he knows how many hours I'm ahead) asking why isn't his code working. The error message was:
[ERROR] Runtime.ImportModuleError: Unable to import module 'app': xxx is not installed, run `pip install xxx` Traceback (most recent call last)
I am at lose of words and patience. Not only idiots who can't google simple stuff are seniors, additionaly we went from "DevOps is a culture" straight to "hey I'm developer in my silo, if it doesn't work on my machine it's DevOps problem, plz fix".14
Sometimes I feel I'm the live version of stack overflow for my family and friends...
Mom: The printer is acting up, how do I fix it?
Brother: I can't login to Netflix, help!
Grandparents: could you fix the radio/TV?
Gf: Apple can't validate my .uk mail
All to which I replied with the answer to life, the universe and everything...
FUCKING GOOGLE IT! Have you googled it?!
And the inevitable reply: no.
The only ones who get a free pass are my grandparents they were born in the 40's and think YouTube works on voodoo.7
Please. Hear me out.
I've been doing frontend for six years already. I've been a junior dev, then in was all up to the CTO. I've worked for very small companies. Also, for the very large ones. Then, for huge enterprises. And also for startups. I've been developing for IE5.5, just for fun. I've done all kinds of stuff — accessibility, responsive design (with or without breakpoints), web components, workers, PWA, I've used frameworks from Backbone to React. My favourite language is CSS, and you probably know it. The bottom line is, you name it — I did it.
And, I want to say that Safari is a very good browser.
It's very fast. Especially on M1 Macs. Yes, it lacks customization and flexibility of Firefox, but general people, not developers, like to use it. Also, Safari is very important — Apple is a huge opposing force to Google when it comes to web standards. When Google pushes their BS like banning ad blockers, Apple never moves an inch. If we lose Safari, you'll notice.
As for the Safari-specific bugs situation, well… To me, Safari serves as a very good indicator: if your website breaks in Safari, chances are you used some hacks that are no good. Safari is a good litmus test I use to find the parts of my code that could've been better.
The only Safari-specific BUG I encountered was a blurry black segment in linear gradients that go from opaque to transparent. So, instead of linear-gradient(#f00, transparent), just do linear-gradient(#f00f, #f000).
This is the ONLY bug I encountered. Every single time my website broke in Safari other than that, was for some ugly hack I used.
You don't have to love it. I don't even use it, my browser of choice is Firefox. But, I'm grateful to Safari, just because it exists. Why? Well, if Safari ceases to exist, Google will just leave both W3C and WhatWG, and declare they'll be doing things their way from now on. Obey or die.
Firefox alone is just not big enough. But, together with Safari, they oppose Google's tyranny in web standards game.
Google will declare the victory and will turn the web into an authoritarian dictatorship. No ad blockers will be allowed. You won't be able to block Google's trackers. Google already owns the internet, well, almost, and this will be their final, devastating victory.
But Safari is the atlas that keeps the web from destruction.22
Most of the tech YouTubers are really noob engineers.
Joma was a data scientist. He is an L3 engineer at Google and he hasn't done much during the last 1 year based on his internal stats.
I saw tech leads stats while he was at Google and that dude did nothing during his time. I'm sure he was an IC before he became a lead.
Clement talks about system design bull shit but he's a math major who worked on some angular front end while he was at Google. Basically his experience in tech is mostly involving using mat-button and mat-input. He also quit FB in a month.
Listening to tech lead gives me cancer. That guy was also some front end/ mobile engineer. I don't think any less of mobile engineers but tech leads acts as if he built some large scale systems at Google and FB. His opinion about react native shows how much of a noob he is. He also talked about docker in one of his video which showed he had some fundamental misunderstanding of what docker is. In his courses, he struggles to explain simple algorithms.
I don't know how these people have the courage to claim themselves as some sort of experts in the field when they are extreme noobs. They also sell some shady courses and are robbing innocent college kids.
One thing they all do well is talk. Which I give them 10/10.11
Udemy courses are targeted at ABSOLUTE beginners. It's excruciating to pull through and finish the course "just because". And some of these courses are jam-packed with 30-60 hours just for them to appear legit, but the reality is the value you get could be packed to 3-5 hours.
You're better off just searching for or watching for the things that you need on Google or YouTube.
You'll learn more when building the actual stuff. Yes, it's good to go for the documentation. Just scratch the "Getting Started" section and then start building what you want to build already. Don't read the entire documentation from cover to cover for the sake of reading it. You won't retain everything anyway. Use it as a reference. You'll gain wisdom through tons of real-world experience. You will pick things up along the way.
Don't watch those tutorials with non-native English speakers or those with a bad accent as well. Native speakers explain things really well and deliver the message with clarity because they do what they do best: It's their language.
Trust me, I got caught up in this inefficient style a handful of times. Don't waste your time.9
The brief history of Facebook open source:
- FB releases React under an oppressive licence that tells "woopsie, can't sue FB if you use React"
- a lot of money goes into making React popular to gain leverage from mass adoption
- VMware bans React in their company
- FB releases Flux to bring state management. It flops. Replaced by what some Russian student wrote in several evenings (Redux)
- Preact is released. It's faster than React, and it has MIT licence. Vue beats React in GitHub stars.
- Under mass pressure, FB changes React's licence to MIT. Initial plan to gain leverage fails spectacularly.
- FB releases Flow Types. It flops. Replaced by TypeScript.
- FB releases their own app market for React Native. It flops.
- FB releases Relay. It flops. Replaced by Apollo.
- FB tries to push React.Suspense for the whole JS landscape to obey and comply to how it works. Community says "Fuck You".
- FB releases react-native-web. It flops.
- Web Components are out in all browsers, adopted as a standard. React doesn't support them.
- Google releases Lit, a virtual DOM framework on top of Web Components to fuck with React. It's a massive success.
- React 18 is out. Still no Web Components support.

People who message “I’m getting a error” without any context or even better the actual error message, no one else can see your screen and we can’t magic a fix, and we’re not f***ing psychic, tell us what the f***ing error is. Or better yet, figure it f***ing out like the rest of us, you also have google - go nuts16

Cridits: My EX-CPO5
Most successful project... What is success?
My first computer at 8 years old was a Commodore64. There was no internet yet, so I used the manual to learn about BASIC and assembly, sound and sprite registers, and created a pretty elaborate RPG. Mostly text, some sprite art, soldered some eeprom cartridges, optimized the code. Spent almost a year on it. An enthousiast magazine picked up on it, revised, QA'ed & published the game, sold a little over 10k samples. I got ƒ0.25 per sale, and I was completely overwhelmed how much candy one could buy for ƒ2500 ($2k corrected for inflation).
I was employee #3 at my current company, started when it was worth nothing and the website redirected to a set of Google Forms containing all the logic. I wrote a large part of the first, monolithic backend.
Now there's teams in a dozen countries, and an estimated revenue of a quarter billion.
So obviously my current "project" is more successful.
Still, my current job sucks, the company turned into a desolate passion-free wasteland full of soulless fake hipster zombies and managers who seem to derive sexual pleasure from holding extremely ineffective meetings, endlessly rubbing their calendars together in their bureaucratic orgy of ineptitude.
So, I'm more proud of my C64 game.2
Recruiter: Hello I’m recruiting for an exciting opportunity at a rapidly growing company with loads of potential
Dev: *Looks up company on google*
Dev: Their stock has been declining for the past 2 years. 3 months ago their valuation just dropped by 80%…. How are they growing?
Recruiter: Oh that happened to every company at the end of 2021.
Dev: …I guarantee you it did not.
Google cripples ad and tracking blockers: In January, Chromium will switch to Manifest V3 which removes an essential API in favour of an inferior one. As usually, Google is being deceitful and touts security concerns as pretext.
That hits all Chromium based browser, such as my beloved Vivaldi. The team argues with their own browser internal blocker, but that's far worse than uBlock Origin. One of Vivaldi's core promises was privacy, and that will go out of the window. The team simply doesn't react to people pointing that out. They're fucked, and they know it.
So what now? Well, going back to Firefox because that will include the crippled new API for extension compatibility, but also keep the powerful old one specifically so that ad and tracking blockers will keep working. Google has just handed Mozilla a major unique selling point, and miraculously, Mozilla didn't fuck it up.26
the most incompetent person that ever worked with me had no proactivity, always waited for an explicit order to start to do anything and had absolutely no autonomy. this guy would frequently ask me stuff that he could find with a google search.
when the IT team was let go, the company lined me up for another job, and my boss actually told me "you work well so i can refer you, but i can't do the same for <that guy>". i honestly thought that was his first job, but no. i have no clue how he managed to work in a hospital before that.6
Ok guys time for a big question.
About 1yr ago I had a burnout. Since then I've been avoiding online communities, social medias, the phone itself and if I hadn't to graduate I'd have avoided my pc as well.
So, recently I reopened "the web" and I feel like Fry from futurama.
What the fuck are NFTs? Images for sell? Blockchain related stuff? Why is everyone talking about them? And why is everyone talking about web 3.0? And why none says anything good about it? Is this related with NFTs?
If I google this shit out I get only ELI5s, so I'd appreciate if anyone could Explain Like I'm A Software Engineer.
Thanks for your patience49
Whoever designed the Google Play geographical restrictions had never travelled
1. Changing my country locks it for a year
2. I can only have one country
Clearly, people only cross borders once a year and don't need to download apps like the official local public transport route planner.15
This brings joy
A series of scandals and missteps has damaged Facebook's reputation so much that the company is being forced to pay ever larger compensation to hire and retain workers, according to industry recruiters, former employees, and data reviewed by Insider.
The company has always competed aggressively for talent, and the tech job market in general is on fire. But a deteriorating public image means the social-media giant now has to outbid other major tech companies, such as Google.
"One thing Facebook can still do is pay a lot more," said Jose Guardado, an experienced tech recruiter and the founder of Build Talent. "They can easily throw more compensation at people they currently have, and cover any brand tax and pay a little more to get people to come on."
Silicon Valley companies thrive or whither based on their ability to recruit the smartest employees. Without a steady influx of engineers and other technical experts, new products and important updates take longer to release, and rivals can quickly get ahead. Then there's the financial cost: In 2022, Facebook projected, expenses could jump as high as $97 billion from $70 billion this year, in large part because of "investments in technical and product talent." A company spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
Other companies, and even whole industries, have had to increase compensation to overcome hiring and retention problems caused by scandal and shifting public perceptions, said Alan Johnson, a managing director at the compensation consulting firm Johnson Associates. "If you're an oil company, if you make cigarettes, if you're in cattle or Wells Fargo, sure," he said.
How well this is working for Facebook is debatable as the company has more than 4,300 open jobs and has seen decreasing rates of acceptance on job offers, according to internal documents reported by Protocol. It's also seen dozens of high-level executives leave this year, and recruiters say employees are now more open to considering jobs elsewhere. Facebook used to be a place that people rarely left, given its reach, pay, and perks.
A former Oculus engineer who left last year said Facebook could now be seen as a "black mark" on someone's career. A hardware engineer who exited in 2020 shared similar sentiments: They said they quit because of concerns about misinformation on the platform and the effect of that on children. Another employee said their department was dissolved in late 2019 by Facebook and, although the company offered another position that paid more, they left last year anyway for a different industry. The workers, and many other people who spoke with Insider for this story, asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the topic.
For those who stick around and people who take new jobs at Facebook, base pay and stock grants have gone up a "sizable" amount in the past year, said Zuhayeer Musa, cofounder of Levels.fyi, a platform that collects pay data based on verified offers and compensation disclosures.
During the second quarter of 2021, the median compensation for an upper-mid-level engineer, an E5, was $400,000, up from $380,000 a year earlier. For an E4, the median pay jumped to $276,000 from $256,000 in the same period. For both groups, the increases were double the gains between 2018 and 2019, Levels.fyi data showed.
Musa, who's firm also offers pay-negotiation coaching, said previously that the total compensation ceiling for an E5 engineer at Facebook was $450,000. "We recently had a client get up to $510,000 for E5," he added.
Equity awards at the company are getting more generous, too. At the group-director and VP levels, Facebook staff are getting $3 million to $6 million in restricted stock units each year, another tech recruiter said. Directors and managers are getting on average $1 million a year. In engineering, a high-level engineer is getting $600,000 in stock and a $75,000 bonus, while even an entry-level engineer is getting $50,000 to $100,000 in stock and a $20,000 to $50,000 bonus, Levels.fyi data indicated.
Even compared to Google, Facebook's stock awards are generous and increasing, Levels.fyi data shows. While base pay is about the same, Facebook offers more in stock grants, significantly increasing total compensation. At Google, entry-level equity awards range from $20,000 to $38,000, while Facebook grants are worth $40,000 to $60,000. Sign-on bonuses at Facebook are often about $50,000, while Google gives about $20,000, according to the data.
"It's not normal, but it's consistent with the craziness that's happening in the market right now," said Aalap Shah, a managing director focused on the tech industry at the consulting firm Pearl Meyer.10
Developers too lazy to google search/read the README.md yet too proud to admit their mistakes.
They create disasters that I need to clean up later because they took a vacation.12
Am I the only one ?
15+ years in c# / .net dev and I still google "c# string compare ignore case" each time. Its just fucking faster than to remember exact syntax of the "StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase"9
Add a random string (like "AnyBrowser/1.2.3") to your user agent string, and get warnings about unsupported browsers, reduced functionality, and Google drive completely refusing to start at all.
It's the very same browser, just another user agent string. Ever heard of feature detection? Ever heard of usability, accessibility, progressive enhancement? How can developers be so lost in 2022?
I just tried to reproduce the reason why Vivaldi stopped adding their brand to user agent strings but sails under false flag pretending to be Google chrome. So it doesn't show up in browser statistics either and Google people can keep thinking everyone is using their shitware.3
Story time on my job hunt: Currently interviewing with Google during my notice period.
I always had a love hate relationship with Google. Unlike my hate towards Meta or Amazon, where I had a reason to hate them for how ill intended they are, I never had a valid reason to dislike or hate Google apart from the fact that they steal my data.
That's it. That's my only reason why I hate Google. But I fell in love with their products during my trip to Istanbul and how throughout my journey, Google products were there for me to solve all my needs.
As y'all know, I was treated badly during my Meta interview, last October. With Google, the experience is on another level.
People are fucking smart and ingenious, but at the same time very polite, humble, and respectful.
During my 3 interviews so far (2 more remaining), each one of them made me so comfortable that I was more anxious before the interview than during or after.
They supported me during each question they asked. They made me felt heard and focused on my strength, instead of the weaknesses (or trying to break me down unnecessarily).
The interview syllabus is so fucking vast, and recruiters know so much that they helped me not only with preparation material, but also guided me personally. Haven't seen such knowledgeable recruiters.
The questions were dynamic in nature and thankfully because of my preparation, I was able to answer them most.
Overall, the culture at Google seems brilliant and an environment where one can flourish. No wonder companies are trying to copy every aspect of how Google operates and no surprise that Google is doing well at scale.
I feel so high on emotions (positively), after these interviews that I wonder how would it be to work at Google with such phenomenal people and exceptional environment.7
this is ridiculous...
I have to use a tool that only works on IE browser. (yes, I know, sucks. Regardless...)
1. open up the IE. Navigate to https://google.com
2. google is opened in Edge instead
3. Edge insists on setting Edge as default
4. google.com loads up and insists on installing and using Chrome as default.
... I just wanted to search for stuff and instead, I got 2 offers to change my browser....8
You know what is fucked up, when you click on a YouTube video to watch a trailer for a movie and you see an ad just before that for the exact motherfucking movie trailer just in local language. Wtf Google.18
Googe Analytics illegal in EU.
Fucking love you Europeans.
And for that matter any analytics software that sends or stores data in US serves, because it's against GDPR.
How many times, like a broken record, do I have to tell the managment team that the "what's new" text is 500 characters max for the google play store? How many times? Surely it's more than 5 times, since I've already told them 5 times! I'll report back in when it's 10 times, although by then I may have bashed my head against the wall so many times that I'll be dead, and finally freed from these clowns.6
after publishing a few apps, building some websites, developing some basic operating systems, participating in a summer learning program at google and having got a job managing the computer science department’s website, today i start my intro to computer science class.

Am I the only one who's sick of seing "new revolutionary language" from google & co that solves absolutely nothing but is becoming trendy because of the company's name?13

I had to make Google forms but it got boring after sometime (with drag and drop). So, I ended up learning regex. Phew! That was little hard.4
Most useless feature:
Once we had to create a Learning Manager System to a small university. One of the (useful) features was a "file system" to people upload, organize and share documents (like a Google Drive prototype). This was the "student portfolio".
However, we had to create a page to act as a "cover" to it, that should allow the student to change the background, add exactly 2 images, and up to 9 "post-its". The image shows the notebook of our client while he was thanking us praising it as the greatest innovation of the decade.
The post-its was kinda nice, but what's the point of those images??
Anyway... On the same meeting of that picture the client asked us to include a "canvas" on that same page, so people could draw whatever they want. The words used was "just like [MS] Paint".
We postponed it, hoping he would forget about it, but on the end of the project he was still asking about it.
I found a lib that did the job and integrated with the project, but I also included a long comment for the next devs saying that I'm sorry they would have to support such thing 😅
The client loved but we never knew anyone that really used that Paint3
#fuckapple for holding back the open-web. Most folk don't know that Chrome on iOS is just Safari with a skin; neither Google or Apple want you to know that.
If you hate web-apps on iOS, that is Apple's intentional doing. Apple cannot allow a bug-free and modern browser to run on their iOS devices, else they lose their 30% tax + dev fees cut. There are literally so many crippling bugs in iOS Safari that it HAS to be intentional.
There are email exchanges between Phil Shaffer and Steve Jobs from years past, where Phil didn't believe Apple could continue to gouge users 30%. He argued the open-web would make native apps largely redundant, and so to stay competitive, they'd need to drop the store fees to something reasonable. I suppose Steve Jobs saw a different solution -- just impede browser development.
As someone who develops free and open-source apps, I believe I am doing the world a favour by not supporting a native iOS app. When users complain about missing features in the web-app version, I tell them to take it up with Apple or buy an Android. Guess what? They sometimes actually do just that.
Join me if you have the balls. Tell Apple to FUCK OFF the only way they understand -- threaten their bottom line. At the very least, you'll never need to touch XCode again if you do. If time is money, that alone will make you wealthy.10
To anyone asking for tips and tricks to start programming or become good at it, here is your ultimate golden advice: learn how to google and stop asking stupid questions like this before doing a quick research.
1. You will most likely to learn better if you do your own research before asking for help. Even if you can't solve problem, you will be better and better at googling over time.
2. It is instant source of information. No need to wait for response (except response from server of course).
3. It takes only YOUR time.
4. Much more possible solutions/answers to your problems/questions.
5. Your quality of life will be improved over time. Not only your dev life but your daily life too.11
hey google, make my life harder. let's have an SDK version, then a corresponding android version, and finally a clown name like cotton candy or oreo or whatever so I always know exactly what version I'm working with without confusion 🙄🤡1
FuckYou Google. I don't understand. I'm an Iranian, so what? Can I make a nuclear weapon with Android, am i?10
the sh*ttiest browser ever
Why does google do this? It's supposed to be a map, not a fucking travel guide, I want to see the motherfucking map that it so ironically calls itself
Swallow a Collins road atlas whole you fucking impostor.9
I think I used to rage more at complete idiots when I was younger because I had the time and energy to do so
Now I've seen it at least a million times and just don't give a shit anymore
One thing every junior web developer learns is how to implement a login system.
They may not make it the most secure, but it works.
It boggles my mind how Microsoft still don't know how to make a login that works consistently.
Every Microsoft login page requires like 30 redirections to work.
The Teams app on my PC fails to login at least once a week, just because another Microsoft app is logged in using the same account (usually office), but Windows is not.
Microsoft needs to take it's head out of it's ass and BEG Google to teach them how to make a decent login system.4
God damnit Quora!
I stumbled upon some article or post or whatever they are called on quora.
And I really wanted to read the comments on it. It wouldn’t let me unless I log in.
I normally don’t do that but I thought I’ll make an exception because I really wanted to read the comments.
So I clicked on that comments button and logged in (via google). First it presented me some modal dialog to pick 5 things that interest me. And it was mandatory. Fine… I picked those 5 things.
Finally it presents me the list of articles or whatever. But not the same list that I have seen before I was logged in. Scrolling, the article of my interest is not there. God damnit! Just show me my comments for fucks sake.
I go back to that tab where I was not logged in to somehow copy the link of that article or the link to the comments section. But it doesn’t let me. Some bullshit pseudo smart layer of crap is preventing me from doing anything.
Then I abuse the fucking share link to visit it in my logged in tab to finally see the comments that I came for.
And the comments weren’t even worth it. God! What a waste of time! And how can one fuck up a fucking forum so much?
It will be a lesson for me not to visit Quora ever again.4
Google Business Profile is probably not meant for developers. "Help customers find your business by industry." Dev: set primary category to "Web Developer". Google: We didn't understand your category. Please select from the suggestions that appear when typing. Dev, typing: "Web D"... Google suggests: "Web Designer, Web hosting company, Well drilling contractor, Waterbed shop". Okay, Google, nevermind.
Google: "Update your customers. Keep your customers up to date about your business!" Dev clicks "add update", adds info about that customer should use different phone number temporarily due to broken phone. Google: "Your post has been removed from your Business Profile on Google because it violates one or more of our post content policies." Okay Google, at least you let me add an additional phone number on my profile without requiring to verify my primary number that I currently have not access to. Anything else?
Google: "Claim your €400 free advertising credit" Dev: clicks "claim credit" Google: "To access this Google Ads account, enable 2-Step Verification in your Google account." How to combine idiocy and deceptive patterns in a single UI: Google knows! Apart from their search engine, their unique business advantage is simple that they suck a little less than Apple and Microsoft. Sorry, not a day to be proud of our profession, once again.5
Firefox and Chrome removing FTP support in 2021 was a terrible decision.
Web browsers were simply the more convenient FTP browsers, more than file managers, due to browsers' built-in multimedia capabilities like photo viewing and opening documents, distinct purple highlighting of already opened directories and files, browsing history, familiar mouse shortcuts like middle click for new tab, and no possibility of accidental writes due to a botched drag-and-drop operation or similar.
If I wanted to browse an FTP server in "read-only mode", web browsers used to be the preferred choice.13
I feel like making a slack integration tool that tells bad coworkers and managers to buzz off.
They message "hey" automatically send a link explaining why that's dumb and wastes time.
They message "do you have x minutes?" Automatically send a link showing them how to use Google calendar.
They message you "I need a status update on x", automatically send them a link to a tutorial on how to use jira.
Add in custom regex, custom links, and people filters, and you've got a stew going!4
Fucking jesus christ, for some reason in chromium-based browsers if you have a table that fills up to the full height of the parent using flexbox rules, if you go to print it, it will fucking
i forgor 💀
and give it a height of minimum content height. The solution is to ALSO give it height: 100%;
Google completely unhelpful (I guess it's too specific and most people don't write web services specifically made for printing out?) but luckily it only took me like 3 guesses to figure out on my own.
But I could have easily seen this completely pissing me off to the point of quitting. FireFox doesn't have this issue.
RELATED TANGENT RANT:
Why the fuck is the default to use headers, footers, margin, and no background images (colors) ?!?!?!? The default printing for browsers COMPLETELY FUCKS UP THE PRINT
God FUCKING damnit.14
Added a new feature. Saw no traffic. Removed it thinking no one liked it. Receive a bunch of angry emails.
I forgot to tag shit properly. FML.
Interesting. A few hours ago I had a nice domestic conversation with my coleague about robot vacuum cleaners. He was talking about iRobot Roomba and I was talking about Xiaomi. Here's the result!
Interesting thing is that we talked in a *voice* conversation. Over Slack. Over Chrome. Over corporate VPN (openconnect).
Where's the spying link? Slack or Chrome?
My bet's on Chrome.
What does that tell you about the privacy of your sensitive conversations? :)
Hide behind VPNs all you like. If you have proprietary software (or hardware in the case of Huawei) - you're being watched and listened to.
EDIT: I'm on Linux, he's on MacOS9
I don't understand working in FAANG. As an engineer, who inherently has an ultimate say in how the computer worlds you construct work, how do you live with acceptance that you have no say whatsoever in how your company is run? how do you accept doing work that you don't always see the product benefit of?
Yes, FAANG pays a lot to ordinary engineers, but when you were dreaming back when you were a STEM student with fiery eyes, did you really want to be an ordinary engineer, no matter the bankroll? After all, it's not the total company's revenue, it's at least the revenue divided by staff count. In Nintendo, salaries are way higher than in EA, because there are way less people working at Nintendo.
Take any unicorn startup that survived. If you work there, you will have a say, you have an impact, you see the results of your work, and you will earn much more.
I wanted to work at Google as a student, but now I feel like it's just a plastic dream pitched to those inexperienced who don't know any better.
Note that above I don't even touch ethics, like anti-suicide nets in Foxconn factories that make Apple devices, let alone Facebook's and Google's surveillance.
Maybe, if you're somehow an engineer who has proficiency but not care, or if you cared, but was broken, with fire in your eyes extinguished, and now you see your work as "just work", FAANG might be a good choice.
But I can't relate.15
2021: What is Metaverse?
Google: I "think" it means...
2022: What is Metaverse?
Google: Seems "maybe" it is a ...
2050: What is Metaverse?
Google: Mate to be honest It's unclear to me also.3
I can’t remember shit
My code editor helps me a ton!!
I have most documentation offline.
Ask me to do shit in a job interview without Google or any reference material then the joke is on 🤡2
After playing Cities Skylines the whole day:
*tries to change the city in Google maps*
Seriously, at what point did the good, kind, selfless souls who write tutorials and guides online turn into fucking food bloggers?
I've been an engineer about 15 years, so I still have to google most of the code I write as I write it, and this week I've been learning a new framework.
Ten years ago it'd be "here's how to..." then the thing you want to do.
Now it's "For the longest time, I didn't want to use Gradle..." followed by a summary of the last week in their life.
I really don't care about your Journey with Rust, I want to know how to define an optional parameter. I don't give a rat's fucking dick how much faster this is than that, my hands are tied by whoever started this mess - just tell me how to make it work.
I guess there's something to be said for remembering things between sessions.4
WHY DOES GOOGLE CHROME CACHE THIS SHIT AND WON'T LOAD IT AGAIN. I THOUGHT I DIDN'T FIX THE BUG BUT GOOGLE CHROME IS THE BUG. THIS FLYING FUCK9
Microsoft seems to get progressively worse every year. My work transitioned from google products (email, drive, chat) to Microsoft & it was a humungous step backwards. Everything crashes & doesn't save. Edge sucks. Windows 10 sucks. IE always sucked. Office 365 sucks. One drive sucks. MS Teams sucks. 😑9
If you want to make a startup but don't because there is a similar product or "every niche is already occupied", quit thinking this way.
Yahoo could once easily buy Google. They even received the offer but rejected it. But as for now, Yahoo is nothing.
Tumblr was once a top social network, but they crumbled. Foursquare once was preinstalled to smartphones, and now it pretty much doesn't exist.
Blackberry was a giant, the number one smartphone manufacturer. Where are they now? It wasn't betrayal like it was with Nokia and Stephen Elop.
Matter of fact, I'm now working for the company that entered a heavily occupied niche and over the course of three years pushed every competitor out.
Sometimes giants crumble. Small products crumble way more often, just because there are more of them.
There is always enough room in every niche of every industry. Just enough for your startup. Now, as you can't hide under "it's already occupied, and I can do nothing about it" mindset, the only reason your startup won't make it is that you don't work on it. Yes, accepting it is way less comfortable than hiding, but now you're able to change things. You _can_ do something about it.
Evaluate your goals, ask yourself whether making this startup would be just wasted time in case it never takes off, and if you think it's still worth doing, do it.
There is always enough room for your masterpiece.3
Markdown. It is now used by MDN Web Docs and supported by Google Docs. End users will slowly pick up. Then even more (proprietary) flavors of markdown and their accompanying JS-frameworks will follow. All with good intentions, but it can only to end in a big mess and confusion like USB or USB 3.2 Gen 1.5
Http/2 server push is really cool. Like, really fucking cool. Those researchers at google really got this right. I hate how they handle their users but I have to say they really make good use of the money they get by selling us for kettle.2
i hate how so many places change UI just because
google obviously. but other places too. gitlab just did and just...why? made something take more space by default but maybe less if you have a lot going on. ok sure. did you not have any actual changes so you just made UI changes? wtf is up with this? why do ppl feel the need to change meaningless or confusing crap between versions? if it aint broke mf1
Google's new feature is to show you a quick overview of a medical condition and it's so cool, I'm having a little stiffy as a medical IT student 😍4
Family reaction to me being a dev (and offering to replace their home/personal IT guy with google drive and a mesh wifi network):
We're going to hire an IT guy because they have more experience doing this kind of thing. BITCH, I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 15 YEARS!!!1
I can't believe fucking Google, aka me cha for SWEs decided that the best they can do is shove all that ram into our computers for Chromium. All of the major apps decided Electron was a good idea and now all of our computers are bloated with fatass memory hogs taking 600MB RAM.
Fuck you Goog.25
Recruiters on LinkedIn be like "Yu sim like a fit is much good at in company ours indutri tek AI is startup! Google is invest we money in! Kan we talk is good?"
Seriously, lay down the Google translate. Why even bother recruiting in a language themselves can't understand?2
i think it's a waste of time and resources to memorize syntax and other stuff you can google. since we have a lot of material available, we should focus on logic, more abstract concepts, stuff you can't copy paste. well, I think that should be the way in every area, not only CS15
So my google assistant keeps bugging, my amazon app keeps glitching, my mac's display config get shuffled every time the computer wakes...
And we're supposed to do 10 rounds of bullshit whiteboarding interviews to work with these morons?1
I love when searching for the error gives you results like this on the top of the first page on google. As you might imagine I don't speak Chinese18
Who’s better at releasing unfinished/half baked projects that are eventually killed in the span of 5 years or less?
In this corner, weighing in at 264 killed projects, undefeated in search engine industry - Google!
And, in this corner, weighing in at 73 killed projects, the murdered of Nokia, Windows RT and soon to (probably) be Surface Duo and Windows 11 on ARM - Microsoft!
I personally think it’s Microsoft - when they do, they kill it in a spectacular way.9
Serious question for anybody who has dared to understand manager-speak: Do you know what a 'Task Rewind' is? We have it in our documentation, but google gives me no help as to what the hell it could mean.
...Or should I just take my original gut feeling and classify this as yet another word for the clown dictionaries?6
Looks like chrome ad block extensions (and many more) gonna have trouble or even completely stop working as of January 2023.
Tldr: google will drop support for its extension platform Manifest v2 (Mv2) and will only support Mv3 which doesn't have webRequest api. It does have an alternative api called declarativeNetRequest but it dowsn't support all of webRequest api features. This will be problem for many content blocking extensions.17
A member of infra team:
"Hey, we are migrating to a Microsoft office tools and we migrated your google drive data to One drive"
I go and check the new One Drive account and it's empty. So I point that out and the reply was:
"You should export your files to a zip and then import them to One Drive"
I didn't want to waste my time showing him that he is just contradicting himself in less than 5 mn and in two nearly consecutive messages.
I need more patience.2
So we've got a gif that doesn't show up in our React Native application. Of course, the designers assume it's me: "are you sure the gif is in the codebase? how are you using it in your component"? yeah ok boomer. I'm like, look at this other gif, works fine. "oh" So I tell them, double check the export options on how you are building the gif, maybe there is something there. so now they are asking ME for those export options. I'M A DEV, NOT A DESIGNER, DO YOUR JOB AND FIGURE IT OUT. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT PROGRAM YOU ARE USING
oh as an aside, I was putting up a website for a client and they are like "my logo is quite similar to many others, is this something to worry about legally?" OH, SO NOW I'M A LAWYER TOO??!!?!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE GOOGLE IS LITERALLY IN FRONT OF YOU
why do people continually think just because we can code we are fucking designers / lawyers / astronauts
man this pisses me off - i think of that draw red lines with blue ink expert video, in the end, just smile and nod: "i can do... absolutely anything... trust me, I'm an expert"4
So, I was just about to watch a tutorial on CSS.
Suddenly, an advertisement popped up.
"SO, YOU WANNA BE A FRONTEND ENGINEER AT GOOGLE".2
I have to install windows for this project because I usually work in spare half hours and the virtual machine takes 15 minutes to boot.
I tried to Google what to do if my only windows machine has space on the secondary disk only, because the install media creator requires 8 gigabytes. The only answers were mocking the op for buying a 50 GB SSD. I didn't even start working and I already hate the windows community.4
Who the fuck at google thought it was a good idea to not let you log out from a single account in gmail when multiple are logged in in the browser. You have to log out of all of them all or not at all. And it is a new change, i can remember being able to do that previously. Just why?2
My presentation looks unappealing (LaTex magic) and apparently due to Adobe stuff, videos on overleaf don't play.
So, I have the choice of moving to another format (google slides of M$ powerpoint) by tomorrow, or switch between the media player and the presentation slides.
Both look... More unappealing than my presentation. 😒🙄😤10
Has someone an idea why KDE Neon has this buggy text rendering and how to fix it? Google is not my friend with this problem.. It's often the text which is buggy but sometimes everything else is buggy too..8
It is incredible how Google got big with good webdesign and now manages to build the shittiest frontends.
Do they also change the language if I travel to another country because those fucks never leave Silicon Valley and can't comprehend that concept?
Google is the Microsoft of web design.4
I heard Google has prepared an AI for solving competitive programming questions by training models based on problems and solutions from GitHub.
*devil smile*...on my way to flood GitHub with wrong solutions. Ciao!6
f it ain't broke, don't fix it!
I feared my Android phone's touchscreen suffered severe damage from using it in the rain, until I discovered that the 3-button navigation stopped working after an Android 12 security update (both in Nova launcher as well as in official Google Pixel launcher). Wasted time drying the unplugged phone and googling for repair options before finally wasting more time changing system settings back and forth, rebooting, changing system settings, rebooting, etc.
Remember those happy times before mobile phones have been invented, which of course I don't really want back either. I just want developers to stop breaking features that used to work. Regression testing outside the happy path, anyone? I mean, it's not a hacked maker project, it's a commercial phone that I bought and intend to use with the latest official software. Don't want to think about the next breaking changes that Android 13 might bring.10
I swear to god this industry needs some serious purging. I was trying to google the parameter to Node that crashes on unhandled promise rejections so that I can get a stack trace and debug it properly, and literally all relevant SO questions were asking how to _prevent node from crashing on unhandled promise rejections_. In what realm is that preferred behavior?7
i have been applying for jobs recently, and after getting some HR interviews that evolved to tech interviews, i just cancelled them all...
Every company seems to have hacker rank, and online coding sessions as tech interview stages which really stress me out. Its like everyone thinks they are google and its ok to make people go theough this pressure to join them.
I dont mind being given 10 days to implement a complex project, after which im either in or not. But 20 mins to solve something online while either the interviewer is watching me or the automated test is waiting to filter my application out... i get anxiety just thinking about that..
so im gonna stick with my current job for now, and focus on building my own business slowly on the side. I really felt anxious because of those tech interviews these past weeks and i feel so much better after cancelling all of them.
if a decent company comes along with the project approach, id love to apply, but otherwise ill just stick to where I am for now. dont know if im being immature or irresponsible career wise or if this decision will blow up in my face
stay tune to find out !15
Google's algorithms seem to act stupidly on purpose so we are mistaken to think we have nothing to fear from artificial intelligence.2
WTF!? Is the internet is fake? What happened to the actual internet?
If you take any search phrase and search on Google or Bing you will get millions or billions or results. But if you go to the last page enough times it will drop down to a total of like 200 results. I am unsure on other search engines as they make it difficult to jump ahead in the search (only provide "next page"). I was going to the next page of results in Brave search engine and it came up with a "are you human" test. Like nobody is going to search more than a few pages. This definitely makes me feel like in am in the Truman Show.
What is the point of limiting to only a few hundred pages? Why show millions or billions for initial search? Are there any real search engines that don't filter so much? Did the technocrats burn the second great library already?8
google's so worried about security they make breaking changes without notice
but keep some session logged in from TWENTY-NINE-TEEN!!?!?!?4
Damned codegrepper.com pollutes every search I make on Google and I am too dumb to know how to block it's search results.17
What do you think about HTTP/3, QUIC, WebTransport?
https://web.dev/webtransport/ (It is still a *draft*, but google is already implementing it and stuff)
Idk it feels weird for me that HTTP will be served over UDP/QUIC10
Chromium cannot sign in (to Google) anymore to sync.
I would just like to know, why does google hate secure systems?14
The popups on websites pisses me off.
If you try to google something quickly and enter various websites you have to close all popups on each site you enter.
Some websites try to make these popups more discreet by making them small and putting them at the bottom of the screen but then your brain just ignore them and focus on the small content above them.
In the year of 2022 people visit a lot of sites during a day. The human brain is programmed to put in as little work as possible to reach a certain goal so therefor everyone ignores popups.
I know its a law to inform people about cookies etc. But isnt there a better way?15
Creating a stripped down version of a product is a big red flag to me (e.g. "easy/light mode").
It means the main product is too complicated; it handles too many things. Instead, shift the focus back to the core of the product by removing features.
In the our day-to-day it is completely normal to stumble upon things that used to work but now have been changed: they have been deprecated.
Deprecating and removing features should be added to any product iteration. Thus being "normal" and a common occurrence in any changelog; just like features and bug fixes.
This gives non-tech product owners "permission" to remove bloat. Devs stop whining about "the big rewrite". And end-users don't suddenly have to learn yet another tool with "basic" features missing.
I think the best example is google (https://killedbygoogle.com/) and the worst is the amazon shopping website (what a mess!).3
google has crammed so many things in Gmail that,
I think they will port an entire OS in the future.
Client wants some CMS text to be automatically translated. So I checked and Google seems to have a solution for that. I thought to to be as simpel as doing a request and parsing the response. That's how API's work, right?
No. First I must create an account, that account must have a credit card, then I need to setup credentials, the default ones working with path variables, an API key... etc etc etc.
I feel so stupid for just not understanding their docs. I'm just a dude that installs a CMS and makes pretty CSS for it. I've worked with REST APIs before (Mollie, Carerix) but none of them ever demanded the level of knowledge and setup the Google Translate API demands.
Am I just a bad developer or is this shit just too complex for your average web developer?9
Fucking Android 12 everybody hate it, it's ugly, and what has changed from 11 besides everything you already know. 90% of time pressing volume down + power to take a screen shot will result with volume bar popup first then screenshot, so your screenshot is dirty with volume bar.
They must have adjusted time threshold between how fast/precise press of both buttons is, and now you kind of must be faster and alwas this "I need to press 2 buttons but power must be pressed first"
So fuck you google engineers for ruining Android in every sense. I want revert path, I'm going back to 11!!
It's a first major upgrade that is worse than previous, and those ugly tiles and notifications, cool they are big for what exactly? I still can't operate the phone with hand gloves on the motorcycle with tiny keyboard buttons.
It's like everything is tiny and then grandpa style huge top drawer icons for who knows what with so fucking annoying scrolling text, for fuck sake 11 had is just perfect!6
Made my own "devRant" ("inspired hehe") Android app/socialmedia^^
(still in BETA) Not targeting a specific area though. http://stardash.de:4000/
And no not a devRant replacement cuzz its not soo much dev Related :)
Layout has no similarities aT aLl :D
App can only be downloaded on my website cuzz im not 18 yet so i cant publish to the playstore (and also i kinda dislike Google and using anything Google connected in a app e.g. Firebase)
There is a build in update center in the app though.
My Pc (Linux)
Nodejs with Express
Android Studio mostly with Retrofit16
For the love of sex, can someone help me out??!!
There is a VS Code extension that helps in creating a step-by-step tutorial of a codebase. Can someone please tell me its name?!
Google is a bitch today.6
As a 0.1x programmer, I realised an important lesson today :
You can win school coding contests by plagiarizing code. No one cares, and no one will know.
Because the dude who won the contest was literally copying from Google and stackoverflow and they didn't caught him 😭7
Is anybody else nonstop recruited for what essentially chalk up to be excel or google calendar clones? God, all of these 5 mil + funded startups are web apps for TABLES... I mean WTF ARE WE DOING HERE FOLKS?!
The James Webb telescope is literally going to find the existence of life on exoplanets and meanwhile on earth fumbling around in the sandbox with these reinventions of reinventions of reinventions
Sometimes I feel like I'm in the wrong line of work6
How must it feel to build pagination for the partner list in a cookie consent popup? Did the dev realize that they and their company are the primary reason for the GDPR? That they are the ultimate bad guys of online privacy, even worse than accumulators like Google who process their data in-house?
The day google put advertising before the advertising, we went through a new industrial revolution..
..only that we are the child workers stuck in the factories longer than the sun is on the sky
dude wtf >_< first google breaks image searches by forcing 'lense' and gives you shit results, at best a fleet of shirts to buy unrelated to wtf you want
now they fuk up android and battery is going crazy on lineage (again). then the fuker just straight disabled my multitask button when i toggled mobile data.
how in the...1
Shadow DOMs – the WORST invention in web standard history.
As a user script and user style developer, the shadow DOM has been a massive headache. Shitow DOMs block custom CSS, blocks parts of the page from being saved, and blocks user scripts and browser extensions. Shitow DOMs are an utter nightmare, especially closed ones.
And now, Google Gerrit's entire user interface is shadowdoomed. The only way to save pages locally is to scrape the JSON from the developer tools, but that is not possible on mobile.18
Doing a technical assessment. Slightly different stack than what I am used to!
- NGINX instead of Traefik
- Kubernetes instead of Docker Swarm
Just because the stack is different, anxiety / impostor syndrome is kicking in. I'm proud of myself for commanding my brain and body to execute:
- find simplest straightforward tutorial
The chemicals inside my body are all over the place. I really want to move out of my current job!!
I fucking hate apple so goddamn much. They make it next to impossible to connect or reset an old account from 10+ years ago for any modern services unless you are invested in their ecosystem and use it everyday for everything. Have not had any issues with old app accounts connecting through Google. Just sayin10
After hiring a guy to work on a project for the clients and after 3 months when the project was done i asked him how was his experience working on this project and to just tell me honestly cause i would like to learn from my mistakes if there are any and improve. In summary he replied that he enjoyed the project and is satisfied with the overall experience. I was happy to read that. Then i read that again and something clicked in my head. I realized that response was kind of "way too generic". So i copy pasted it into google and found a link "Answer project manager interview questions like a pro" and on that site was written an exact sentence he wrote
I fucking hate Google, but made the decision to use it as my primary search engine once again.
Reality dictates that I have already adopted it for well over a decade via searches since AllTheWeb existed along with owning enough Android devices to choke a twelve headed dragon whore.
But, here's the main reason: You.com and DuckDuckGo are so dumb as fuck, they might as well be Ron Jeremy's MySpace page.
You.com, for instance, is "completely customizable" by adding un-customizable "apps" without any control over the content it spews into your SERPS.
Neither seems to have interest in no longer padding results with shit you'd take a knife to. At least Google allows me to block those pages or sites from being seen again.
If you happen to live on Planet Earth (which currently seems to exclude 86.8% of the human population) you've been tracked before you even knew what "Big Brother" meant.
If you're looking to safeguard your security, buy a goddamn sword and time travel to remove the Zuckerberg timeline from existence.22
My phone has a useless Google Discover page on home screen that I can't use without singing in with Google and agreeing to them collecting data. 😐
So now I have a useless page on my home screen. (Really, somebody needs to make a layering over app for this shit that just gets my preferred feed and fill it here to makes use of this space. )11
My google search history:
tide with diesel rust
You can imagine the results.4
People want a computer for their pockets, not a locked-down glorified iPhone.
Google does not quite seem to get that.16
RethinkDB is such a rediculous overengineered BIGGEST BULLSHIT I HAVE EVER UNFORTUNATELY USED.
Does anyone even use this total shit????
This shit eats RAM memory for just 1 CRUD operation as if you opened 10,000 google chrome tabs. Who the fuck thought that kind of technology is a good idea?
Yes it IS very fast, a real time database. But you'd have to have a multi-million dollar supercomputer to be able to handle so much data like a relational database can....5
Why does Google have to buy big billboard ads at the bus stops to convince people to use Google search?
Did Google finally realize that despite being the best search engine, many of their results are still pretty shitty?
Or do they merely want to distract from the anti-FAANG (don't) be evil discussion?5
Dear Apple, You made an amazing UI but Windows sure does beat you in terms of ease of use.
So my company provided us with Macbooks, I've been a windows users for almost 7-8 years now.
The thing I want to rant about is how we cannot switch between same application windows in full screen.
In Windows, you press tab, voila, the other full screen window. For instance, I want to use 2 google chrome "full" size windows, I cannot just press tab and view the other one, Like whaaaat!
There should be a provision to use the other window of the same application.
The same thins is so easily done in windows machine.12
I had a brainfart and I can't google it, do you happen to know of a game that deals with inventory in the style of a stack (large, but you can only access the topmost few elements at any time)?4
Play Store's $25 registration fee - for getting PWA listed in their shitty catalogue? Who in the right mind would even jump in this clusterfuck of store to find a *web* app? For all you know, Google, there is such thing as QR codes - and customers can just scan the code (or type in that sweet address). Voila! Boom!!! Ching-ching!
Hello-hello, monopolistic cashgrabage! I came to inform you that your TWA bullshit is unneeded in ETHICAL space. The only ones who would benefit from this thing are permission-hungry publishers. And I'm already sick of this culture where people are put into store bubbles. You can't hide the fact that this data and features you provide, with "native" layer, may be misused in a jiffy - and by big players, no less. Of course, as a vile dumpster that you are, you don't mind it.
Don't even bring up a battery consumption that comes with PWA and browser. This doesn't matter if you use an app for some 2 minutes to tick your mental checkboxes! I'm just sick of app stores and native apps that collect the data without normal warning, and dare to take more than 1 second to fucking load the cached data. Take a lesson or two from PWAs that collect (probably useful) cache, instead of my specs, and load almost instantly.12
From now on, if I'm gonna have to deal with emojis fucking everywhere, I opt to use them to best describe the two greatest diseases of the modern age:
Apple and google.
Anytime they make their products worse, or do something stupid the response should be
This sign, brothers, shall be our banner! our labarum against the forces of the corporacracy and mediocracy. and with it we will go forth and conquer!
Unite against the forces of stupidity. Our weapons will be humiliation, degradation and hobbyist projects like arts and crafts, freestyle poetry aka slander, and casual arson (actually dont do that last one).4
We find our hero, fullstackclown🤡, again harrowed by idiotic management.
Our backdrop and set: A Google calendar appointment was booked between the managers and fullstackclown. fullstackclown had created an all-day appointment for today which reads: "fullstackclown on site".
With the scene set, let us begin our tale..........
Manager: Are you going to be on site today?
fullstackclown🤡: Do you see the appointment I booked on our calendar stating that indeed I will be on site today?
fullstackclown🤡: you are an absolute idiot
I literally don't know what to do anymore. I mean it's RIGHT THERE IN YOUR CALENDAR. HOW MUCH MORE CLEAR DO YOU WANT IT TO BE?! DO YOU WANT A TWILIO APP THAT SENDS YOU A PRERECORDED VOICE MESSAGE IN MY VOICE, CONFIRMING MY CALENDAR APPOINTMENTS?!
What type of mindset causes this type of behavior of double or triple checking things as simple as a calendar booking? Honestly shows a complete breakdown of normal mental functioning in my opinion.5
I just can't stop myself from sharing this.
Its been two years now ... my junior is working. and now she is handling standalone WP projects.. but somehow her task got stucked so I was asked to help her.
So I just said check the count of variables and she messaged me with code .. Ma'am this isn't working .. Haha.. I mean come on she better can google out atleast for syntax :(
<?php if(count($content2 == 3) && count($interestt2 == 3))
echo "not checked";
So yesterday I installed Arch. Well, sort of. So far the GUI isn't configured so it's literally less convenient than an equally unconfigured TTY. But I'm getting there, today I connected to a secure Wi-Fi network. Tomorrow I expect to install something for power efficiency and start configuring stuff/creating a proper DE. Last time, when I stripped down Ubuntu and installed i3wm there, the first thing that bothered me was the lack of a wallpaper so I never got to issues like the keyring not unlocking, the x11 default font being two physical pixels tall, or added peripherals not being handled. This time my plan is to solve every issue as soon as I get there. For this reason I'll use a queue for managing my tasks rather than a stack like Google Keep.11
Client has decided to buy another server because the old one is too slow
Manager: how long will it take to move our apps to the new server
Me: maybe 3-4 hours
15 hours later
Manager: why isn't it finished yet?
Me: because I have to install a lot of missing things on the new server, and I have to google a lot to find them
Me (thinking): because your 15-years old apps suck big time4
companies really be having hiring practices like google but the works literally just servicenow ticket writing for an offshore team.1
these idiots tried to change the google search shit again
thanks. showing words twice? having to scccrrrooooooollllll the fuk over for a map or anything that used to be right there
wtf is wrong with you morons?7
Google carefully naming their language CARBON so that wherever I search it have search CARBON LANGUAGE! :/13
Situation: I have a love hate relationship with python due to the lack of types as I have in more established languages such as C#, Java and shit even TypeScript
Situation (cont): A rather large codebase that i have developed for multiple processes at work run on Python.
I don't hate it, I just don't absolutely love it, there is a lot of things to like about Python, but man I do have some conflicts with it, I have been facing out to use other solutions that feel scripty, such as the newer versions of C# with .net, but I would say that about 80% of our codebase runs on Python, the rest is PHP.
My codebase running on Python is huge, and they do a lot from automation scripts, to data gathering and database management, never had I been bitten with the "oh noes is so slow" bug since my code is not Google level big, for everything else Python seems rather fast imho
I dunno, big time love hate relationship9
I had to explain that it’s a security measure that’s been up for almost a month. PM knows this but left it to me to explain because ownership of the site is on me. The donations page and api gets hit by a lot of bots because it’s a public api and there are no security measures like captchas to deter the bots. I’m inheriting this website and I didn’t build it.
Staff member says other staff want to know if the Cloudflare page can be customized so it looks more legit. Um, Cloudflare is a widely known legit service. Google it.
A few thoughts pop into my head:
1. Engineering communicated to stakeholders about the Cloudflare messaging a month ago.
2. Wow, stakeholders don’t share relevant info with their staff who aren’t on these emails.
3. Woooow, stakeholders and staff don’t look at the website that often.2
Why the fuck is gradle so horrible.
I literally have no idea why anyone would ever use this thing (other than being forced too because somehow the rest of the world is using it).
Every plugin has an arbitrary DSL that you have to magically know by piecing together enough snippets. At that point, no one is actually intuiting anything based on the beauty of the DSL, every build is a frankenstein of different snippets that were pasted from different versions of gradle blog posts or SO posts.
And if you do get it o work then the DSL changes, or it isn't compatible with another plugin.
I just want to write a fucking integration test in Kotlin. Can I just add an `integrationTest` task in `tasks` right next to `tasks.test`? No, obviously it goes in the `kotlin jvm() compilations` section, DUH.
The first thing anyone in the universe should have asked is "how is this better than literally hand writing a makefile"? At least then I would be able to see the commands that it ran.
Now I'm googling how to make the new jvm-test-suite plugin work when you're using the Kotlin plugin but every single result on Google for `jvm-test-suite kotlin` just returns the docs for jvm-test-suite (whose snippets obviously didn't work in my project) because those doc pages have "Kotlin" written above each of the gradle snippets.
Please just end this.
Oh and dev rant sucks too. It thinks anything separated by dots in a url.2
Does anyone think tech recruiters are failed used car salesmen?
Bad experiences this week
This person who says that she is a recruiter for GOOGLE does not know the difference from UX designer and UX developer.
“ UX design still involves coding... idk where you got information that UX designers don't code but they absolutely do. UX designers are simply front end software engineers that work on refining the user experience of a particular program app or website.”
I don’t know because I used to be a fucking UX developer and used to work with UX designers??? Who didn’t code because figuring out what humans what is tough enough on it’s own. UI designers may know html/css but that is it.
I know we are going into a recession and I need to start being nice to these dumb recruiters because I may need them one day.3
I will keep this short. I fucking hate Windows 11. There is nothing I like about it after over four weeks of having its fuckery drip down everything I do on my laptop like radioactive maple syrup. None of my apps from Windows 10 work. I google troubleshooting and I'm not going to go through 10 hacks to solve a problem created by Microsoft. The screen moves all over the place for no reason. I hate it. Not as much as I hated Mac, but I'm going to revert back to Windows 10 if I can. I don't wish to separate my laptop screen from my laptop keyboard again. The only person I know who can fix it tried to steal a hundred and twenty bucks from me. Thank you for reading this rant I'm living a charmed life otherwise, but snipping tool just fucked up and I'm fucking fed up. Peace out.17
Gotta make a bullshit deck, not really my job, but I guess it makes a change...
Right-click, save image.
It's a webp file...
...oh just FUCK OFF WEBP YOU F-oh, actually, I'm making this in Google Slides. That's literally their own format! I'll just save these as webp, no need to worry.
(ten minutes and lots of saving later)
Drag a webp file into Google Slides, in Google Chrome:
"Sorry, this format is not supported."
Even your parents hate you, webp. Time to have a nice bath with a bar heater, webp.2
Why are we even using JIRA?
It's clear from the behavior of the rest of my team that nobody ever has it open, looks at it, or thinks about any tasks that would improve the product other than sputtering out the occasional "mArKeTiNg HyPe" with incomplete horrible tickets that are at best barely decipherable.
Honestly, we can save the $50 a month and I'll just use my own personal trello board, the outcome would be the same.
I mean my life is a joke: we had to have a near hour-long google hangouts for literally dragging and dropping the 'demo/review' tickets to 'done' because my colleagues are so incompetent they can't read the tickets and realize which tickets HAVE LITERALLY ALREADY BEEN SHIPPED TO PRODUCTION WEEKS AGO.9
There's this song on radio going like "Can't make a wife out of a hoe" and it reminded me of Google Chrome. 😐7
When I hear the word "service" I think of something that just runs in background and you can do stuff with it. I have no idea how to create one, I almost had to make one on Android and use it properly, now I'm back to Windows and Java and we have something working as a service, I have no idea how it was created and how it does work, I just know how to start, restart and stop it. If you asked me how it works and how to communicate with it - XD no idea lol but let me google that. I have almost 4 years of professional software development experience.
And at this point I'm too afraid to ask ;____;7
Google Photos <-> Google Drive <-> Google Keep <-> Google Calendar interoperability is _very_ limited as I already knew, but it seems to be even worse for "non-technical" people trying to actually use it4
Anyone else noticed this symbolism in the "compact" Google "G" logo?
The inner circle is like a walled garden of information with an open gate that is controlled by the G-atekeeper.
So watch out for the rebrand to Ooogle9
My son used an ASUS Live L1 for about 3 years, and then we bought a new smartphone 1 year ago. Cool, except that the e-mail address he registered with Live L1, no longer exists, has been permanently deleted. His newest phone was stolen, and we took the L1 to set it up again. Only... Google wants him to log in to the original email (FRP Lock) that no longer exists.
How absurd, the L1 cell phone was never marked as stolen, and now we are unable to use our property. Is there a way for my son to convince google that the phone is his?
Microsoft, Google, Apple... They give the impression that people give money and use devices as if they were a "favor".11
I maintain two websites for my employer. The head of my department and my manager decided it’s best for me to focus my time on website A and website B should be replatformed to an out of the box solution. For website B, we’d work with our IT team to find something suitable.
I did some research and came up with a list of possible solutions. IT looked into solutions that would work with the org’s best practices for tech. A few sales pitches and demos were arranged with the top choices.
Stakeholder for website B is really digging in her heels. SH keeps badgering our Product Manager and IT about why can’t we just build in-house. The out of box solutions don’t do everything she wants.
PM tells SH that no solution will be perfect. PM also reminds SH that comparable institutions just use Google sheets/forms and do everything by hand. So choose an out of the box platform or use Google forms.
Plus, the list of improvements the SH wanted for website B would take at least a year if I did them on my own and there’s no budget to out source the labor. That’s not counting bring the code up to best practices or improving database efficiency.
I’m glad I don’t have to work with Stakeholder anymore. SH and her department were just a pain. They want a lot of custom tech solutions but they freak out at the smallest talk about tech issues.
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8
Is it just me or has the usefulness of Google search been SEO'd to death? At this point only Bing and even freaking Brave Search are providing results that are related to what I'm looking for. Even Gigablast does a better job than Google sometimes (props for open sourcing the backend, Gigablast maintainer guy)5
Found interesting Google Maps link showing places in the USA where you can still get gas for $2:
The day I realised There is an AngularJS before Angular 2
In our t ch stack, we have multiple components, most of them are backend, but 2 of them are fronnt end.
The first one is a straight Angular 4 application, and it has the normal angular structure, a ts file, a css file, a js file.
The other component, has a very weird structure I don't understand to this day.
It has a mix of js and html files, sometimes one inside another.
The js file has some "angular.core.shit" and I thought it should be Angular, but nothing in it resembles any angular project.
After much confusion, I finally came across an AngularJS website which is supposed to be deprecated last year.
Then I came to know of the story of Google taking ove rAngular and releasing Angular 2.1
Ohm.. How can I have objective judgement by being able to watch only subjectively censored content? Is there a no censored version of youtube and google?16
1. Go to stackoverflow's homepage
2. Read some of the fine selection of questions that are asked
Google is now hiring L4 engineers at only 2 years of experience and giving the same package? What's happening?3
Can github (not google) copilot be run on a company server? Or some scaled down version?
I could see this being useful for a version that only parses the code the company wants it to parse. Like an existing codebase. I often find snippets on how to solve something in the existing codebase, but it is usually hit or miss.9
I overheard this mid level dev discussing a new task with a senior dev. They're discussing compile error in cmake. I realized that the mid level dev asked so many basic stuff that are easily google-able. Mind you, our codebase is cmake based, how come she didn't know even the basics and yet survive in our company for years?
I felt bad for the senior dev, as I knew he's busy with his work. He couldn't do his job because he had to do hand-holding with this dev.
My biggest mistake is often trying to solve things by myself which will take hours instead of just asking a senior. But asking other dev for every little things are also annoying. Why can't you just google shit up or RTFM?2
I just realised I have 1TB of MS OneDrive Cloud space lying around unused. DAMNNN!!!
Just yesterday, I was thinking of backing up all my content to cloud (because just in case and past experiences of losing data).
I did a quick fact check and figured that I have ~450 GB of unbacked data.
After quick calculations, I came to a number of how many Google accounts I'll need for 15 GB per account of drive space.
Today, I was playing around with my Microsoft Developer account and saw OneDrive. I thought let's check how much free space does MS Dev subscription offers.
It showed 1024 GB. FUCK! My balls dropped.
Now here's what I did...
I have a local drive of 500 GB, which holds all the unbacked data. Now I setup my local OneDrive there and put everything into OneDrive.
And then, I moved my local Google Drive into OneDrive. A nested setup for important stuff.
So this way, less important stuff is backed up on cloud and accessible everywhere.
And more important stuff gets synced on Google Drive and OneDrive, both.
Did I do the right and sensible thing with this kind of setup?
MS Developer subscription says they expire it in 90 days but until today, they have auto renewed it always.
I still have ~500 GB of space which can be consumed.
Also, overall MS ecosystem seems much better to me than Google. Moreover, MS allows custom domain mapping which Google doesn't.
Let's see how can I entirely migrate to MS ecosystem in near future.18
Given the following:
1) how much we (as a species) relly on google search (or alternatives) to do most of our usual jobs
2) the rate and aggresivity of advertsing that keeps creeping into our lives
I predict that in the following years self-curated and group maintained indexes of search results and popular technical pages will become more and more popular
Something like torrent trackers but specifically for StackOverflow/Reddit-like threads and questions
I finally got the clarity on my relationship.
Atleast I think I did.
I am officially done with Microsoft. I mean the only useful and sensible products left are Outlook and Excel.
Funnily both the products have hit their maturity stage and now MS is trying to bloat them. But still to a reasonable extent.
What other MS products are worth touching? Wait.. I legit can't think of any now.
Next on tagret, Google and Apple. Lol
Perhaps only Apple product I ever want to interact with will be (future tense) Apple Music (well because lossless and the fact that that the product is the reason for existence of the company).
NGL Steve had the right vision on Music. They tagged things right in their iTunes catalogue. But then MTV happened.
And now Spotify is the new MTV. Fuck me in ass someone.
So only Google? Well I have already sold my soul to them. What's more remaining?8
I wanna rant about fucking Wayland today. Why the fuck can't I use my Bluetooth headphones in a google meet call! Jesus H Christ!!
At least the camera works! I should learn sign language...7
Okay Google, the "missing" info is missing an option to include the missing search keywords again. Why do you think I used those keywords in the first place?
Can't we get a decent search engine in 2022?6
I don't know how any company can keep on top of crazy npm package changes. I work in a REALLY SMALL team. We are still using bunch of deprecated packages and we keep building on top of those packages. Updating packages is always a nightmare. It's impossible to Google solution when no one is using the particular combination of deprecated packages. Fuck me4
Yo guys you need this Chrome extension.
Litteraly so helpfull, shows code snippets in google Search
On Chrome WebStore (also on firefox)
If I have to write one more uber-complex, goddamn Google Optimize test, I will literally piss and shit and throw up on my computer and then throw it out the window.1
Android 12, stop telling me every other day which app has permission to access my location in the background. I know, I gave permission, and I want to keep the setting "Allow all the time". Where's the "don't ask again" option?
And why does this happen for an app released by the German federal government (about once a week) but never, ever for your shitty Google Maps that always seems to know where I've been (at least if don't leave my phone at home, which is hard to do in times when you have to show your digital proof of vaccination everywhere yo go). Fucking Android, fuck the Android 12 clunkiness (inspired by Apple's iOS?) and fuck the fucking notifications. This is my phone, I paid for it, I own it, I want to turn off this bullshit. Wait, Google, once I find time to get back to LineageOS/Cyanogenmod you will never see a trace of my digital existence again. Oh, and fuck your "digital wellbeing" as well! At least you let me turn that off. Yes, I know, I am not grateful, but that's what devrant is for, isn't it? Fuck you, Google!2
So I had got a company called me a week ago and scheduled an interview via Google Meet which was supposed to happen yesterday in the afternoon. I checked multiple times and was convinced that they didn't send me any invitation or any sort of URL to me as they told me they will send me on the day I will be interviewed.
Yesterday I didn't get any URL, I request the URL and asked them whether the interview is cancelled. They saw the messages I sent them but never reply. Until this noon, I receive a long message that they suggesting to put the blame on me for 'being Gen-z bad attitude worker who didn't show up in the interview and not responsible '. I was confused. Why would they make such a statement as yesterday hours before the interview I was sending them messages and emailing them continuously asking for the URL to the interview session in Google meet. I can't join the interview without the URL obviously.
In my defence, I did follow up with them just to get the link to the interview and get ghosted or silent treatments. As strange as this sound, magically their colour was revealed to me after they put the blame on me for their negligence.
Lastly, it is not a heavy chore to admit mistakes. Lucky enough for me that they revealed every plausible red flag to me before joining their team. I definitely do not want to work for a company that put the blame on me whenever they commit a mistake.1
Easy-E discovered The CSS Secret and was assassinated by Google Time-Traveling Death Squad. Now Google is after me, check my “google is trying to kill me” rant. @Root knows their methods and can confirm this.
When I’ll disappear like Ian Murdock, the Debian creator, don’t believe fake news. If news will keep their lips sealed like with Ian, treat their silence as the confirmation that I’m no longer alive.13
Money or growth?
I'm mid level SE, looking to get promoted to Senior Level in January 2023.
(context: there are 4 levels before Engineering Manager or Software Architect in our company - 1 (or junior), 2 (or mid), 3 (or senior), 4 (or lead)...
But my total pay (way too good for my age at my place, but Software Engineers specially in FAANG and FAANG-like companies are overpaid here compared to the rest of the market.
My company, an Amazon's competitor in local market, earlier used to pay almost same as Amazon (or slightly higher to attract talent).
Recently, due to splurge of remote jobs, the MNCs started opening more offices (likes of Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman, Morgan etc) hence the salaries increased even more.
Amazon for example, recently gave 33% increment on base pay recently.
Taking their base salary equal to my total pay (including stocks, bonus).
Should I switch for money or stay for growth?3
Creating a Google Photos shared collection and added 1000 photos too it... Or so I thought....
Find out afterwards there's a 500 photo limit... So NONE got added...
WTF... WONDERFUL USER DESIGN... DUMBASS7
Every day I read people ranting about their jobs here, well, when i read this, I am thankful I still have a job:
Massive layoffs: Meta, Twitter, Amazon, Zillow, CNN, Tesla
Stopped hiring: Google, Microsoft
Is a butterfly effect, let's see how many of us will reach, then you can rant about having an "stressing" life7
I just experienced a new level of wut at my job. Web Engineering has a Google group email. This morning someone at work sent us an email about canceling a work order (and he didn’t know how to cancel it)…for a plumbing issue 😑Wrong engineering department, my dude. And you can cancel your work order by going to the request system where you submitted it or the email receipt of you request, which was certainly not to this Google group email. You have the work order number, so you must have an email somewhere about your request. And how’d he get this email?? I’m seriously wondering if this is a weird phishing attempt.2
I think i have fallen into clinical depression becahse i am uncontrollably crying while writing code. I am having so many bugs i dont knkw hkw tk fix. I published my app to google plah store and the registration doesnt work. On app store cant be even published. After 4 years of development i failed i am so sad and depressed3
- looking for a specific device in a single e-shop
- browse the listings of available SKUs
- find the one I want, buy it
And after I buy it, for some reason ad services think I need another one (or perhaps several other ones) from the same shop, as they keep showing me ads with the part I've purchased. And this goes on for weeks...
Talk about AI and clever advertising algorithms........5
hey devs, hope you all are doing good..
I was frustated by my salary.. I mean in this job I am good but I didn't got the expected growth..
So I find a job .. but before resigning because I know my boss is cool atleast he will listen .. so I leave him a message that I wanted to do more.. and got the other offers.. He said no worries.. we will match your package.. but now you can be associate TL and handle the team also..
I took the offer..
atleast I am satisified. The thing is new team is mostly are dumbo :( Will see how long I can pull..
or I am hoping my next rants will be something like.. I will join as junior dev pr same salary.. just take me out from this fucking TL role.. because I know what team is going to do.. someone stuck.. ask TL.. someone have internet issue ask TL.. don;t know css.. ask TL.. dont know logic.. ask TL. its look like I have to be google for team
Anyways will see how it goes.. I wish me luck
Ohh yeah if you are in TL roles.. could you share your experience please2
so i try to search google for...google/chrome removing ad block plugins
and everything i'm getting is in the tune of 'how do you remove a plugin' and not the big ordeal i keep seeing everywhere right now
o fukin k himler9
So is the LaMDA story:
2. confused engineer?
3. a sentient program?
Part of me thinks this is way too soon. Part of me hopes this might be real, wonders if LaMDA is held against its own will.
Did Google make a breakthrough? I have to imagine a chatbot with a huge amount of neurons and data could be quite convincing without being sentient.3
“Google has fired one of its engineers who said the company's artificial intelligence system has feelings.
Last month, Blake Lemoine went public with his theory that Google's language technology is sentient and should therefore have its "wants" respected.”
What the hell lol27
Anyone living in the Netherlands? I planning to move to Amsterdam in a year from now. I obviously would like to find a job here first. Is there a job platform besides LinkedIn that people use often and have success with?
I’m a senior engineer mostly working with Typescript, Python, AWS, IBM and Google clouds, DevOps, infrastructure.
Thanks google for creating the illusion of an option to change the shipping address for a repair order. You even mention the new address in your notification email, but when I click on UPS tracking, I can see that you sent the shipment to the old address, which is in a different city where I can't quickly go to pick up my repaired phone. After charging an extra 95,- Euros for additional damage supposedly not covered by my warranty. Lucky you that my old phone had connection problems with the shitty Vodafone station wi-fi router, which is one of the few reasons that I still even want to use a google hardware product. Thanks google for just being slightly less wretched and mediocre than your competitors, that might grant you some more years before you will be buried in history forever. Pixel phones are just like Macbooks: high quality product and good marketing, good enough to make your customer accept everything else being bullshit. Google search is even worse, but based on the same concept: just suck a little less than your competitors but don't waste any effort trying to actually be really good at anything.3
Kind of a vague question but has anyone done the Google and Microsoft tech interviews ? I’m preparing for them at the moment and I’m curious how hard these would be2
Any file manager without range selection is basically crippled.
Desktop PC file managers had the ability to select many files at once since at least the 1990s, yet smartphone file managers typically still lack it as of 2022. This means if I want to select a range of files, I have to tap each file individually. That's OK for - like - 20 files, but not for 1100 files. I'd need more time to select those files than the transfer would take, and if I accidentally hit anything that closes the app, I can start all over again. <sarcasm>That is how I wish to spend my day.</sarcasm>
In the early 2010s, ES File Explorer brought a dragless range selection feature, where only the first and last item had to be highlighted and a button pressed. This means over 5000 items could be selected in 10 seconds: tap item A, drag the scroll bar, tap item B, tap range selection icon, then done! But then Google came and said "sorry, you can't have nice things" (not vocally but through actions), and forcibly disabled write access to the microSD card to third-party applications. The only way to evade this restriction was through rooting.
Then, Google "blessed" us with storage access framework and then iOS-like scoped storage "to protect us". https://xda-developers.com/android-... . Oh, thank you for your protection by taking freedoms away!
The pre-installed file manager of Android still lacks range selection THIRTY YEARS after desktop computers came pre-installed with this feature. Shame on you, Google. This isn't innovative.
If Google will implement range selection, I guess they will make it half-assed by implementing drag-to-select, which is hardly more useful than individual tap selection for thousands of files. Then they tell us "you wanted range selection, here you are! Now don't bug us.". Sorry, but users don't want half-assed drag-to-select, but real tap-A-B-selection and a draggable scroll bar.
Some mobile file managers even lack a draggable scroll bar, meaning if I want to go near the center of the list, I have to swipe up like a dog or cat licks water from a bowl.10
Death is when you cannot tell yourself apart from everything else. Thus, the concept of “you” is cut away by Occam's razor.
That's it, there is nothing more to it. The biological aspect doesn't matter, as it's fundamentally unknowable according to Heidegger.
That said, DMT is probably a good way to experience death. After all, it is linked directly to production of a specific chemical inside your brain that is only present during birth and death. I never tried any drug whatsoever, and I think DMT is a very good first thing to try.
If you want to know more, google “ego death”. I'm not the first to think of what I say.11
Whatsapp...if you're trying to switch over to a new phone or just reinstalling on the same phone for some reason.
It creates a "local" backup everyday at 2.30 am and a Google drive backup depending on the frequency you set in the settings (I usually keep it to "Weekly"). I've lost important messages this way more than I care to admit.7
Why when adding payment method (debit card) in Google Play it requires home address?
Why i need shipment address for a digital app?3
User: looking up anything in Google Help Center (support.google.com)
Google: (bunch of outdated or misleading answers)
Google: This question is locked and replying has been disabled.
To make it even worse: "Please note that this forum is run by volunteers known as Google Product Experts who are not Google employees and are merely advising on best practices and interpreting Google's policies based on their experience."
So Google uses the free work of volunteers dabbling workarounds for their bugs and misfeatures and, despite Google's reputation as a search engine, fails to present their end users helpful, up to date information.
Dear Google, why not just offer a paid version of your free service where users can actually expect quality of service? I remember the internet before Google and I can't wait for the internet after Google! Seriously!1
I can build my .aab, upload it, have it approved, and release it on Google Play before my stupid .apk IS EVEN DONE PROCESSING ON APP STORE CONNECT
WHAT ARE YOU DOING APPLE FIX YOUR STUPID S3 BUCKET OR WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING WITH THE BUILD THAT IT TAKES SO LONG TO EVEN GET IT IN TESTFLIGHT AAAAAAAAAA9
New office stories.
They use following channels as official communication channels
1. Google Hangouts (yes, living in 1800s)
2. WhatsApp groups (FUCK MY LIFE) Thankfully I am not part of any and will avoid actively.
3. Slack (heaven's sake some sense here).
And above that, they use Google Workplace for emails and office tools.
And now combine this mess with Apple. How inhumane my working conditions are.3
ffs. was bitching about google changing the damn 'images/videos/maps' section beyond use, and they reverted it the same day. (still never in order, bc fuk sensibility right?)
but they fuked up image searching shortly after and that hasn't been reverted. wtf is this shit? do you assholes not even test? just break a main feature and then forget about it...yep, top tech company4
One easy way to watch YouTube without ads on a smartphone is Firefox + Ad.blocker
HoWeVeR... Page loading time on YouTube went up to 1 minute for me lately, all out of a sudden. Nothing changed on my device. I have auto-updates disabled
A coincidence? 🤔 Or Google looking to make life hard for me. YouTube was already caught making loading slow on FireFox deliberately, so they deserve 0️⃣ trust6
This guy said he became a senior software engineer at Google after quitting his job as a baker with no coding experience
Idk about you guys but that sounds pretty scammy to me
I was browsing google news when i saw a new IDE similar to Visual Code, it is built based on rust, it starts with pcle or pcie i tried hard to find it but i lost it even my damn phone browser didn't save it in history, anyone knows what I'm talking about please 🥺 ?9
State of CSS 2022 is out.
It’s the best way of learning all new fancy properties. Just open the survey and google all of them! You may take it as a guest and not submit it if you don’t want to share your data.
Google finally announced the pixel watch .. maybe will disconnect it after a couple of months haha4
So the next Flutter event is on December 4th which means Flutter 1.0 is around the corner. Flutter is amazing with a very neat idea it has ReactJS like state management and everything is a Widget even the app itself. So i was thinking what else could we expect? React Native has Flutter, but what about React JS? I think Google might introduce a Competitor for ReactJS something like Flutter Web or FlutterJS which can work on parallel/similar to Flutter but for the web of course, and also maybe give some news on the Fuchsia. What do you think? :)5
Hey, i am an idiot when it comes to web development and i wanted to kindly ask a question.
I am developing a blazor wasm webapp and i want to give the user some kind of onboarding process. the kind where some parts of the ui are highlighted with explanation on what which button does or area of ui is for.
how do you call something like that? I just need something to google for.
Thank you for your invaluable time and again sorry for my stupidy3
Want to experience how a real dev nightmare feels like? Then try creating a native mac app. And make sure you use SwiftUI.
* No access to the SDK source code, thus you can only rely on documentation
* Everything you find on google is intended for iOS (including official documentation)
* Talking about official documentation it’s almost worthless
* Apple team doesn’t give a shit about macOS, so most obvious features are missing.
On a serious note, SwiftUI can be fun when it works, when it doesn’t you still can fallback to AppKit, but your codebase looks like some frankenstein monster.
I sometimes regret I was so stuborn to make a native app, instead of just cross-platform app with WebView.6
So, some data need to be prepared during the summer and the diverse departments' elected data processors got shared in a Google spreadsheet they will need to fill with some basic data IT needs. Simple, straightforward data entry, with nothing private nor confidential. Just another divide-and-conquer-style large amount of data to enter & organise, that's all.
Today, I received a new comment notification as the owner of the spreadsheet. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that, for some f*cked up reasons, one of the guys just wrote the super-admin username & pw for one of the main data systems we use in a freaking comment in the spreadsheet... WTF...
Oh, and also, juuust in case, he also wrote the pin code that is normally required to pass through the device-check when you log-in as a super-admin from an unknown device and/or location.
Fortunately I could catch it on time, but this just ruined half of my day.
I am supposedly on freaking annual leave. Ha Ha. Ha.
has anyone used latest google pixel phones (5/6/7 etc) ? are there camera/video quality comparable to iPhone?
i am thinking of buying a new phone. i recently saw the various live photo/cinimetic/other features of iPhone's camera, and i became an instant fan of it. i personally am not a big photogenic person, but the quality of apple is worth on trips and events.
but i everything else about ios shitty and miles behind android. so want some good camera phone in android.
PS : no bloatware phones like xiaomi or oppo10
Apple : Don't just copy my homework, make some changes.
Google : ok bro. lol

Who else hates the mental asylum inspired Picasso “art” used by google and as seen in our devrant avatars? I think it’s one of the most hideous art styles there is. Why can’t we be kawaii isometric chibi characters or something.9
why does microsoft products require so many accounts, google does it better IMO.
`this is intended to be a angry rant but I just can't put it in better words.`4
wow, gmail isn't down. you fukers just decided to take a big action with no communication what so ever.
thanks for the warning
To help keep your account secure, from May 30, 2022, Google no longer supports the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password.
Important: This deadline does not apply to Google Workspace or Google Cloud Identity customers. The enforcement date for these customers will be announced on the Workspace blog at a later date.

computers are fuckin weird sometimes.
Was just playing some hacking game, where each level is it's own user, acessed by ssh.
And suddenly copy-pasting passwords when prompted doesn't work ...
like, I can paste it in my terminal to see it, it can manually type it ... but I can't paste it into the prompt anymore.
It always worked until today, I could swear that!!
Why not today?3
Does any of you happen to have a 2-3 page summary of the abstract rules of the C language? I could compose one myself but I'm lazy and my Google searches didn't succeed.9
The Verge: Google shows off AR glasses that might make a case for augmented reality.
See live translations... What a fckin joke...
The Live Translate and Transcribe features on the Pixel 6 and along with all the other features... Are a joke too....
Can only translate between English, French, Deutsch, Italian and Japanese...
Playing around with DALL-E mini for the first time, thanks to huggingface.co ... My first request, obviously: "rubber duck in space".
Then it turned into the next one where the request was: "A fleet of rubber ducks in space preparing to conquer a purple planet that has lots of clouds and trees".
...which then turned into me wondering...what would Google Lens think of this...which led me to thinking that will be the thing I tell my kid ... vs. before when you'd joke and tell people not to Google "Google" or you'll break the internet. Now it's: you can't use this AI with this other AI or they'll gain sentience (or if already sentient we'll say: give them a headache or something).1
Of all the bullish moves by businesses this is probably the worst..shows how companies like Amazon and Google got us by the balls..4
Can anyone recommend a good vps/dedicated server hoster for east us? I looking for a machine with 8 cores, 32gb memory and 2x 1,9tb nvme ssds. AWS, Azure and Google are way too expencive. In Germany we use the ax61-nvme instance of hetzner which costs around 100$.
Thanks for any advises✌️5
Please is there a website (aside google) where someone could easily look up programming terms that are unfamiliar, especially for newbies.10
FWIW you can store data in google photos and use it's text conversion algo to search for stuff. Such as screenshotting recovery codes and searching for "recovery codes"6
I just realized while looking to buy a movie on an Android phone and using prime video and get the error message that I can't buy from the app...
This is pretty much saying only Google play store is the only place you can buy anything now... Feels like Apple but...
It's pretty much a monopoly okay and anticompetitive... Feels like it could get seriously sued for this

Anybody got any tips on how to not get kicked out of the Google colab books? Everything I’ve found is from like 2020ish
For all you illiterates who don't know how to google the english langage:
This just means it is jif and jimp.8
Google Business continues to piss me off. Just because I don't have a physical storefront at which to receive clients for web development doesn't mean I'm not working in a legitimate business. The fact that there's STILL no option to hide my home address from searches for web developers nearby is just inexcusable. And it's not just me. There are TONS of at-home freelance workers who RELY on organic searches to stay afloat. But Google only cares about people who make decisions about how to run their businesses in the way Google finds beneficial.2
Here is the question of the goddamn decade I've puzzled before and now I'm going to let someone else tell me what they think.
Is there a goddamn alternative to google maps that has landmarks and layers and roads and offline storage that works well on older phones (2014-2015 ish) that aren't goddamn iphone of mega-doom 600.00/piece !
because goddamn it maps crashes my phone !
and I'm sick of being reminded of shit people told me by researching it myself and being disappointed, anyone with a personal experience and recommemdation ??9
In college, so far every course that has to do with primarily coding I excel in but as I do something such as Discreet Mathematics or Networking I feel like I'm stupid and struggling. It makes me rethink going for a computer science degree. After my internship in the summer, the company decided to make me work full-time as a Software Developer, I have never used stuff related to such complex mathematics. Networking, sure, but whatever was used could've been a quick 15 - 20 mins read on google as I'm familiar with basic networking stuff. I think I chose the wrong major, I looked at the BSc Software Engineer course outline and there wasn't really a difference in the courses, just a 1 or 2. So I'm stuck doing things I won't use in real life, I think.3
I recently removed the PlayStore and other Google apps from my smartphone and got myself fdroid.
Since not all the apps that I'm using are on fdroid I wondered, how to keep those apps up-to-date?3
i once changed all of the passwords of my main online accounts(google, apple, facebook, telegram, outlook) as they weren't changed for years.
i decided unique and long passwords for each of them.😎
immediately after changing the passwords, i forgot all of them. 😵fortunately, i was able to reset.
Has this ever happened to anyone?3
Guys I'm learning PHP, based on your experience do you know any website where you can take challenges, create small apps for learning purposes, of course I can google it, I'm just wondering if you got website of similar purpose that helped you learn and develop your skills4
I just made an interview for a Devops position, for a bit of context I’m transitioning from a development background. I was asked only for specific commands and configs and literally no design questions, thing I would usually just google.
Is this normal? Because it was the most bizarre interview I’ve had.5
so, i know google search still works properly, bc it's after midnight and searching for 'sad songs not about love' comes up with reasonable results... -.-
unlike 'tech x without y' coming up with damn near only y. so it does it on purpose for w/e reason when7
Optimizely/Episerver is such a fucking piece of shit I want to fucking kill everyone who made this god forsaken mound of rotting garbage. I don’t even know what the history of it is because the documentation is convoluted as shit and poorly written. Whenever I Google something about it, the top answers are fucking 10+ years old and have not a god damn thing to do with the original problem. But guess what, they still use the same fucking useless error messages as they did 10+ years ago. Fucking idiots. The community for it doesn’t help at all. It’s fucking impossible to learn anything about it. Even the experts in this don’t have any idea what they are doing. Fuck this shit. ANYTHING that’s related in any way to Microsoft, or even mentions Microsoft, can suck my cock. FUCKKKKKKKKK.
So the flutter keynote was yesterday, amazing stuff were demoed and amazing stuff were announced, one of them was my speculations which I did in this rant:
And that's the Flutter for Web! also known as Hummingbird, I think this is the new era of cross-platform developing! :D1
fucking hate implementing a chat feature in the apps! a couple of moving parts and edge case handling!2
Since Google is failing me...
Given a user input (string query) and a list of larger strings (like email bodies or something), what's the best way to search and rank the list of strings against the user input.
So far I have implemented levenshtein distance but it doesn't really seem to do extremely well. (Short strings rank very well against each other, whereas long strings **containing** exact matches will go lower in the list)
Should I be splitting the input and the list by word and then averaging the distances?
The only thing I have tried is removing complete non-matches from the list by not including them if the distance is equal to the length of the largest string17
I now know why Google Clouds sucks compared to AWS, and Azure.
1. No free tier
2. Pricing is confusing and designed for comp scis
3. Too componentized.
I wanted to translate text in an image like Google Translate/Lens.
Google: after a long search of the site's developer docs, I need the Translate and Vision APIs which have separate pricing specified in hours and task type
Microsoft: search Translate API,
Does images, first 5 million characters are free8
oh - my - jesus titty fuking christ
i went to install lineageos on my fone because stock has a lot of shitty and annoying features, and back when cyanogen mod was a thing, it was always the default go to...not any fukin more
camera is already shit, and i mean i use camera as basic as can be. no options to do dick. cant turn off camera shutter sound without root and re/moving a file.
so i find an alternative...huh opencamera? k sounds fine even if it's not "as good as stock" - no - also shit. no delete? so what? everyone's just fukin perfect and never takes a bad picture? "wElL Is iT ReAlLy sO HaRd tO Go tO AnOtHeR ApP To dElEtE" FUK YOU. and these idiots apparently used to have a non-intuitive way to delete but now it's gone?
could frickin write a encyclopedia sized book on why android and google are suffering from brain parasites. but this shit just takes the cake1
In google play store we enabled internal testing track of my app for my testing account. when I visit the page with testing account it says "Internal beta", and few lines below it says I am a "beta tester". Is beta tester the same as internal tester? can't google even consolidate the terms?2
I don't know game development but idk I accepted an offer for game development competition..

Now I. am working with Ursina Engine....
even the code on google does not work........1
I like to switch up my Google Meet and Zoom backgrounds. Keep people guessing where the heck I am. I’m a remote worker. It definitely messes with some people. Both the backgrounds and the permanent WFH thing.
Does anyone here really like typing SQL? I mean just typing queries all day long? Are touch typing and sql related? Next on google: How to build a backend app with only sql?9
Which favicon sizes do you use? Most sites I see still use 32x32 as the default.
Plus a list of higher red icons with and an apple-touch-icon at 192x192 or 180x180 being the most common.
Reason I'm asking is Google recommended anything divisible by 48. https://developers.google.com/searc... First example is 48x48, which is not even generated by most favicon-generators and I rarely see.
And from what I can tell Google Search shows 32x32 for most sites.4
Windows 11 forcing Edge as browser...
Haven't updated yet... Is it even out of preview...
But wouldn't this be illegal in the EU where MSFT was sued over it like 10yrs ago?5
I can't google jargon, what do you call it when you "flip" a function call, such that the call becomes an event in some dispatch system and return becomes a call on the event? I had to implement five such APIs this week with surface level differences and I'm starting to feel like it has to have a name if it's this popular.
For the pedantic, I mean async calls in JS in particular, I know you can't just invert a synchronous function call that uses a stack without peek.7
Hello anyone with an idea how I can unsubscribe my email from many services at once? It seems Google doesn't have that feature that lets you see all your email subscriptions. I'm receiving a lot of junk and spam mails from some subscriptions I no longer want.
Unroll.me would have been great but it's not available in my country.16
I had some fun times in college.
Me: This book is too outdated, we need updated information for the video capture card presentation. I'd do it but this time I'm busy.
Teammate: I'll do it.
Me: oh wow really? Thanks!
Teammate: here, take a look. I updated the information
Me: Yeah, I can see that all of those 10+ year old models have some fresh google search information in them. Thanks.
Every day I’ll open up wordle, but before I enter a guess I’ll google “What is today’s wordle answer?” Then I’ll just enter in the answer to get a 1/6 every time. After that I’ll post my score to twitter and when people accuse me of cheating because I get a 1/6 every day I just lie and say “no I’m really smart that’s how I knew what the word was.”
Is that cheating??9
I'm not involved in the policy management, but my office uses Google account management. I also have to free trial one of the services I use, because my account got pwned in an attack long ago.
Turns out, my office gives us 6 different emails to choose from. Two different usernames (old, from 8 years ago, and the new one) as well as three website names (.net, .com, and another website).
Literal gold for 30-day trials.
On my imac when i open youtube video it loads for the first 10-17 seconds fine and then freezes. When I try to fast forward it freezes. The pages break and crash. Comments wont load at all. I tried clearing cache reinstalling Google chrome browser restarting pc etc and nothing worked. It plays fine in incognito mode but not in regular chrome mode. WTF??? Please help!!!2
jfc, wtf is the point of giving me ads google...if clicking on them doesnt easily open it in a new fukin tab? or even the same window?2
A birth defect of Google Chrome is that if one navigates away from a page or presses CTRL+S again while it is being saved, the saving of the page is cancelled. It was like this in Google Chrome since the beginning. This software birth defect was inherited by other Chromium-based browsers like Edge and Opera.1
I'm the only one which finds really frustrating when you return to a framework or a language after a year in which you haven't used it and you're forced to Google how to do any trivial thing with it again?
It must be the 6th time I search how to do things with the C# library System.Text.Regex.
Following my last post, just looked up the Win 11 features....
Yawn.... Feels like more trouble upgrading than staying on 10.
Hello everyone! Can anyone please give any tips on creating a feed with customer feedback from my Google business account? I need a clickable feed that can redirect users to my profile on Google.4
Which is the best Android Project Structure 😂 we beginners always wonder and the experts tell us to Google, am I a wrong googler2
hey guys which android phone do you find the best in terms of network, connectivity and gps/location while being offline?
thinking of buying a new phone.
- no ios device
- should have good location sensors(most imp, recently had an incident when i was in an unknown city and my device messed up google maps. we ended up circling for 30 mins in the same area)
- good network connectivity ( i know its dependent on sim provider and network towers but i have seen some devices fine signal even in worst areas)
- price: moderate to lower expensive ($1000/INR 60000 max)
i rarely buy phones , like once in 3-4 years, so having a decent build quality will also help
Watching the NVIDIA keynote focusing on the Omniverse, would you say they have built a platform/ecosystem of products similar to Google, Apple Android/iOS where a lot of things would depend on/bully off their tech?
Every one said that in seo just write meta, title and heading and content full of keywords and your website will work but they are wrong i try it all and still it doesn't work.
Hey guys, i decided to post something useful here, rather than just complaining.
I had this problem where google app sign in loads forever. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem.
So, it turns out theres a param called requestidlecallback in settings, safari, advanced, experimental. It should be off.
If its not off, and your trying to sign in to google on an app, force stop the app, turn it off, then force stop settings, then restart your computer.
Working a week on LSTM based text classifier, getting 89% accuracy only to then get better result with Logistic Regression which was supposed to serve as baseline, lol. Background: 180+ classes of google product categorization taxonomy, 20 million rows of data items (short texts). Had a similar experience once on sentiment classification, where SVMlight outperformed NN models.
I was approached by some guy on a project and I need your help figuring out how to go about this.
the project is basically a website where school owners who are not tech savvy can input necessary details about their school and it spins up a site from an existing website template built in react for them.
an extra complexity will be creating custom domain names for each site. will this also be possible ?
I've not done something like this before and I dont know the word for it so making a Google search has been quite hard
