It were actually several different sites. I was doing some research and ran into the problem on a lot of news sites.

I have only seen news sites pulling these stunts thus far... I suppose it’s because US papers don’t target the European demographic and don’t expect much traffic from here anyways, so it’s more cost-effective for them to disable access from EU IP addresses.

Well, except for that it doesn’t make sense because I can click twice and get an IP from the US via VPN and completely undermine the whole deal...

Well your data is the opposite of safe, if this website has to make maintenance just in order to comply with GDPR .-.

It's a valid business choice to temporarily shut down traffic from the EU until the legal side (actually understanding the bloody GDPR) and the technical side (implementing the goddamn thing) are fulfilled. And believe me, the GDPR being a legalese piece of shit it's actually pretty difficult to comply.

Our website isn't compliant as I've just written down a basic privacy policy explaining what we do and why, and we're installing cookies by default. However I do care about the privacy of our readers, and we're not diclosing anything other than what's necessary to keep our own website together.
