Why do you think there are only few females in the tech industry? Why are there few female who choose the tech career? (Honest answers, highly appreciated)

One reason I can think of us that females choose careers like medicine more than tech. For example, my sister is studying to get into med school and doesn't really like programming

Did like zero research on this but isnt this changing.

Computers and games and stuff used to be boy things and so most guys grew up with more affinity to them.

So its only naturel more guys ended up in the our field.

But we are getting less gender biased and so I think we will see a grow in woman in our field.

Women tend to help people more than build things. It has always been like that, it's written in society. I find it amazing, though, that some of them get into IT, and I'd like the field to diversify more. They are so much more tidy, clever and focused than us in my opinion.

As I said earlier on another rant, this has an explaination. A lot of men get into IT because they can, while only the passionate and dedicated women will reach a job in it (that's unfair, but that's the way it is). That explains why, on average, they're more committed to their work.

That's changing, too. I'm a student, and I see an ever-increasing number of females get into this. That's the way to go.

Until some people in our industry stop seeing women as "special" and "out of the norm" when they get into it, they will stay a minority, because they will feel uncomfortable being treated differently than male colleagues.

I just asked a few females (who are not in tech) most just got out of college on why do they think there are less female in tech industry. Most of their answers in summary is based on the perception of the career. Most have limited knowledge of what tech careers are. I hope that in the coming years because children now are more adept to technology, there’ll be a higher percentage of female who’ll have an interest and pursue a tech career

I have 2 siblings, brother and sister. Both me and my brother are programming. My sister is not. Same upbringing, same exposure, she just wasn't into tech and same goes for most of the women.

As @bwnbear said I believe it's perception. You think about a nurse the first image that comes to mind is a woman, a physician? Men and women. A kids teacher? A woman, otherwise in the US a man would be a pedo (I'm talking aboht perception, not reality) A dev? A balding, fat, white man with glasses and a face full of pimples who programs full time in his parent's basement.

Women and men are equally capable in STEM fields but society still steers women out of the fields and make them take more social related routes

Women have been discouraged for years from pursuing careers at all, let alone careers in highly skilled fields like technology.

Even today software development carries a stigma that our society ignorantly claims makes it the domain of, "failed men."

The short answer to the OP's question is that there is not and never has been a good reason. It's been stereotypes, herd mentality, and outdated attempts to assign gender roles that've kept women out of tech.

I am delighted to see these non-reasons becoming less and less impactful over time.

gender-based psychological preferences. women prefer to work with people, emotions and such stuff, men prefer to work with things and exact concepts.

also men are more willing to put up with infuriating and complicated stuff if there's enough money in it

@JAY505 because, in comparison to construction workers where being a man is a clear advantage, in software development there is no difference between genders so if women don't apply is because something else is wrong.

    @JAY505 The point isn't oppression here :)

@JAY505 I've worked with enough women to come to my own conclusion, no feminism involved
