I've fucking had it with youtube, fucking jizz slapping knob butlers. I'm going to setup a mirror on my server, the idea is:

- Setup a youtube-dl cron that fetches multiple times a day both audio and video versions of the music playlist I have, hopefully with some sort of progress tracking of each download and total, so I could check if it has run successfully and have a nice dashboard, might need to do that myself (except if compactd proves itself to manage that all)

- Need to figure out a way to download the "best" quality but not go beyond 1080p, since if some videos for some reason are uploaded @ 4k, that'll be a waste of space

- Have Compactd/Funkwhale/Koel as the music player frontend for the audio version of the files, preferably one of them should offer download of the files too, so I could have a similar setup to spotify, though I could probably also just have some filebrowser installed or have a password protected index.

- Not sure what to use for the video versions, since sometimes the video goes with the music; plex? emby? suggestions are welcome

- Saw somebody (ab)using google drive as their backup for all the music they download, so I want to setup something similar, rsyncing all videos and music to some account, so in case shit majorly hits the fan, I can just download everything back

    Spotify is cheap.

@telephantasm I have spotify too, but it simply doesn't have all random songs I have on youtube.

Everything good has been deleted from YouTube. Most of my favorite memes have been removed because thry were offensive (they absolutely were, that’s what made them funny) but I guess I just don’t think that’s a valid reason to remove things.

@FrodoSwaggins don't get me started on content outside of music, it sometimes boils my blood how content gets removed nowadays because it's considered offensive or against "community guidelines" (especially post-google)

youtube was ripe for competition decades ago, but none of the services managed to fucking properly reach instead of spending time wasting it on shitty strategies like vimeo and its kind

@FrodoSwaggins yeah I'd chop a limb off before I'd use apple music

@FrodoSwaggins tbh most of my content I enjoy is violent in one way or another, especially music videos, so I get hit with that fucking delete message a ton, if not multiple times a day

@JoshBent I know you would. I was being about 50% facetious, but the other 50% Apple Music is actually excellent. I don’t think it works on android unfortunately, but I surprised myself. Always was very against streaming services until I used Apple Music. I still buy the music I really like on CDs but it’s like an unlimited trial run before I do.

Anything that’s digitally compressed is still going to be shit compared to flac though

@FrodoSwaggins haha atleast there was the other 50%, but apple music just like any other apple product is great - if you're exclusively inside their ecosystem, it's not really that pretty if you go cross-platform, that's my main concern with it.

I have an iphone I bought for hardware testing of apps and tried to use it as my daily driver for the fun of it, but I just can't get away from android anymore, I feel absolutely locked away, tied up and can't find alternative tools/configurations I need in my actual daily driver, it's a shame.

@FrodoSwaggins I have actually never tried flac before and tbh I am afraid to try, I was a hair away from buying a full set just like a year or two ago, I would probably have the same buy-in as with monitors, once you have three you don't want less, so I'd upgrade all my stuff to be as "pure" as possible, which would ruin me haha

Sounds like an interesting project! On a totally different note, congrats for unlocking your new tiger 😁

@Condor thanks, that's like the third time I am hitting it, just wait a week or so I'll hit it again haha

@JoshBent let's just hope that nobody deletes their accounts in the near future then 😛

@Condor I don't mind even if somebody does

@JoshBent Apple Music is actually not that bad on Android, the app is a bit iffy though. But the streaming works great. And it's really really cheap, at least in India.

Also, have you ever run into URL decryption errors with youtube-dl?

@RememberMe haven't yet set it up, but currently fighting with compactd not working

@AlexDeLarge haha re-reading it now I've gotta say I've laughed myself too

@RememberMe I had no idea it worked on android. I guess it has to...

@FrodoSwaggins I guess it's too big a market for Apple to ignore. Good for me, anyway, I don't really like Amazon or Google and there's no Spotify here.
